Please keep in mind that the label Republican dosnt necessarily conote them being conservative. Most conservatives do favor the Republican mold but not in all cases. Ole Bush is a country club Republican more in line with the eastcoast Republicans like Giulliani. Im a conservative and it kills me to think that Bush didnt vetoe one blessed spending bill that came across his desk. This is NOT what conservatives put officials in office for. They look for fiscal responsibility and a reasonable spending program, not the one we have now in DC,
Well sure republican doesn’t equal conservative (although there are some folks (and you know who you are) who think it does and who also think that Democrat equals Liberal and that Liberal =bad)

Republicans like TR gave us the great American progressive movement were dead set against conservatism

This new fangled, evangelical, southern fried version of Republicanism just drives me nuts.

Not only does it turn it’s back on 150 years of republican tradition but it wraps itself in this conservative mantle while it clearly isn’t.

Bush is hardly an east coast Gulliani type republican
Oh, and while we are on the subject of “pork barrel”, the entire state of W. Virginia is dedicated to the pork barrel spending of Senator Byrd. The whole state reaks of his dedications and monuments to government spending.
Yes but WV has the nicest highways in the nation 😉

Someone said this afternoon that when PA realizes who & what their new senator is they will start looking for ‘the return department’.
Maybe. Maybe he will be a dud. But I think people, especially pro-life people should be paying much more attention to PA’s OLD senator, not the new one.

Arlen Specter has been pulling string of power in this state for decades and in this country for 40 plus years! He has an amazing ability to wield power and stay low profile. Guess who came up with the single bullet theory as a member of the Warren commission investogating the JFK assassination? Yup, it was Specter. That’s a fact.

I know it sounds like conspiracy talk, but really: what would make Santorum turn his back on his solid pro-liife career and vote against the pro lifer Toomey and FOR the pro-anything senator Specter? What kind of power does this guy hold? He’s had 26 years in the senate and seems to be on the power committees…makes you wonder.

this is what people don’t understand: the republicans don’t give a damn about the pro-life base, they laugh at them behind closed doors, saying to each other how great it is to be elected by what they call useful idiots. i used to be republican but i refuse any longer to be a puppet to either party. if the republicans wanted abortion ended they could have done it in '94 when they reclaimed the house, in '00 when bush was elected, or even in '04 when they made even more gains. as of yesterday the white house was republican, the congress and senate were republican, the majority of the supreme court was republican nominees… what on earth was stopping them from ending abortion?! NOTHING! they could have done it! right there and then!
You may be right. But which is better, to stay constant so that pro-lifers can educate the public on the evil of abortion and advance their pro-life causes or to have the Demoncrats un-do what pro-lifers have worked so hard to achieve? For sure the Demoncrats would do worse. When enough people are educated, they will demand to the end of abortion.
But now, things might change for the better due to this election. The Republicans will see that people would not play their game anymore. Nothing is guaranteed. They would have to take the people seriously if they want to keep their position.
This election just might be their wake up call after all.

Talk about divine providence!

Agreed. I’ve believed this for quite a while now. I’d love abortions to stop. Making it illegal will diminish it but it will not eliminate it completely. Only by moving our culture to one where human life is truly considered a sacred thing will abortions stop. That’s a difficult task but through the prayers of our Mother si se puede!
Sorry to be negative, but abortion still wouldn’t stop. There will always be someone aborting in secret just as there will always be murderers, thieves, etc…

the church teaches that there should be reasonable regulation on the marketplace. this doesn’t necissarily have to be the federal government. i work of the government and know how it is intimately tied to big buisnessthe marketplace without ***reasonable regulation ***is ruled by greed and objectifies people. unions and a higher minimum wage are two things supported by the church. same issue, there must be regulation of the market. if not, it goes against what the church teaches. you have a problem with the catechism, not me. as for people keeping there hard earned money is fine as long as it is inaccordance with their productivity and need. the fact that the ceo of halliburton grossed over 42 million in 2004 is not just distribution of wealth when there so many poor in the world.

injustice to the wage earner is a serious a sin as sodomy.
I wouldn’t say as serious as sodomy, but it’s up there with some vile things. Otherwise, your points are very well taken!

Oh, it won’t stop completely, but by changing the law without changing the culture, it will still be one of those forbidden things people do on the “down low.” On the other hand, if you change the culture, human life will be respected and the law will change. As a bonus, abortion becomes something to be ashamed of, not something to be fought for as a “right.”

the supreme court violated a state law by forcing it to consent to the court, overriding the state legislator. congress has its right to declare that court order null and void, and the states themselves can also do as such within the law, and there is nothing the court can do about it. and yes a justice can just as easily be impeached as any president or senator can
It’s easy, is it? No. They have to actually break the law. You can’t impeach someone because you disagree with their interpretation of the Constitution.

Mike,

If you can actually show cause and effect, I prefer to judge it by that. Statistics tell you little or nothing. If you can’t determine the actual reason for the downturn/upturn, then you are going to repeat it.

I think actual action by elected officials, which translates to laws, is the only way to judge their effectiveness.

Robert
Do you judge it by a list of laws, or do you judge it by the actual number of lives lost? I know which I prefer - and the statistics are clear that the abortion rate has come down far more slowly since the Republicans were controlling everything than at any other time in the last 20 years.

Mike

If a little levity would not be out of place here is Stephen Colbert’s take on the election results: youtube.com/watch?v=eI2F3iVxsUo

I’m not happy with the Democratic victory but the Republicans deserved to be punished. Don’t lose heart. As an ex-Democrat I have faith in my former party’s ability to screw this up royally?

Remember the Oliver North hearings? They took an outright felon and turned him into a national hero.

It’s easy, is it? No. They have to actually break the law. You can’t impeach someone because you disagree with their interpretation of the Constitution.
but that was my whole point. there have been dozens of court rulings in the last decades that were impeachable actions based on the fact that they overruled a state’s laws in violation of state’s rights and seperation of powers

Brent Bozell stated on a c-span show earlier that 30% of the people who voted for Webb in VA also voted to support the marriage act in that state. His point was the disconnect between their candidate and their issues.
And Bob Casey jr is not pro life! He talks he is but he does not support legislation like banning the morning after pill, or stem cell research and he supports public funding for family planning. He rides on his dead fathers coattails. He is very concerned about seperation of church and state and wants religion out of the public square, school, etc. As tho PA is a theocracy?! Or the whole USA? The Father Frank Pavone’s of this world comes to mind. Someone said this afternoon that when PA realizes who & what their new senator is they will start looking for ‘the return department’.
What’s Bush’s stance on the morning after pill. As for stem cells from what I understand Casey says he doesn’t support any more federal funding for it. And no offense but I know a lot of Evangelicals who are for birth control, although Casey’s Catholic and should be held to a higher standard, but I can understand a bit why he might not want to make it illegal.

As for stem cells, Casey from what I understand advocates status quo, no new federal funding which is Bush’s position. In actuallity Casey may be more pro life than Bush. Give Casey a chance here.

My my, where is the usual complaints of voting machine riggings and voting machine manipulations? Why, because the Dems won overwhelmingly. But, wait until the Republicans again gain precedence the Dems will come out of the closets and start howling again about how unfair the voting machines were just wait and see. At least the GOP accepts for the most part the results as they come in, but let the votes tilt the other way and there are investigations galore.

History was made this week! For the first time in four election cycles, Democrats are not attacking the Diebold Corp. the day after the election, accusing it of rigging its voting machines. I guess Diebold has finally been vindicated. http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon6.gif
Actually, the reality is, The DEMS put so many lawyers and watchers out there, I think the whoever would have possibly done such things illegal acts was too frightened to commit them. Too bad this was nt done in 2000 and 2004

The prolife movement suffered no setback. A movement to legislate morality in a secular nation…maybe. The true victory has always been about changing hearts…that fight will continue and eventually win.
Life will always triumph.
This from a Democrat who is very pleased with the election.

John
Thats exactly how I look at it and feel as well. Now with the Senate being won I am happier than yesterday! But Joon Stewart said something very telling to Howard Dean last night -“So Mr Dean, how long will it take the Dems to allow power to corrupt you guys”? 😃 Dean said longer than the GOP did 😛

I feel the Dems are gonna be very careful and prove themselves so they have a shot at the White House - THEN they’ll slowly become corrupt as well, as is human nature and much power

We are not talking 583 votes…I’m from PA and Santorum lost 6 to 4…far worse than the polls indicated. I live in a county that almost always votes Republican despite a substantial Democratic majority in registration and Santorum lost by over 2.000 votes…of 10.000 cast.
This was not a close call…it was a classic whooping…
I took it in 1994… welcome to the machine.

John
Yes, that and my feeling everyone was watching closely for vote fraud is why things worked out so well

Rien what kind of a believer are you?
It is not Christrian to rejoice in the election of members of the Democrat party, which officially works to keep abortion legal for the whole nine months and works officially to bring us homosexual marriage by actively thwarting marriage protection amendments.
In Missouri and South Dakota deception was used to hood wink gullible voters into rejecting protection for the unborn.

You rejoice in Nazi medicine! That is what the Democrats have on their agenda for Congress-dismembering the most helpless human beings, our embryonic brothers and sisters with our taxes and then trying to tempt us to use therapies developed from their bodies!

Corruption? Hillary Clinton has a major ongoing lawsuit against her for fraud and corruption and lying to the FEC which hopefully will put a dent on her Presidential aspirations. You don’t hear about it, of course, because the media is controlled by Democrats and Hilary-lovers. You cannot trust the news media.

Corruption? How old are you? The whole 8 years of Clinton’s administration was one illegal activity, scandal and disgusting sleaze one after another and all were connected to the Clintons. Clinton is only the second President to be IMPEACHED in 230 years. Democrats wrote the book when it comes to lying, cheating and stealing.
By the way, I will never vote for a Democrat.

Look at the votes. The Republicans are strong in the South where people still have common sense and decency and believe in God. Everyone running for office in Tennessee, even Democrats, claimed to be pro-life, for example.
In the Catholic areas, pagan Catholic Democrats brag in debates and ads about their support for murdering children. And this is not corrupt in your book?

Foley did something the Democrats have no problem with. Afterall they support homsexual marriage and support rights for sexual license at any age. After all they support graphic sex education from kindergarten on up. If Foley had been a Democrat, noone whould have batted an eye. Because Republicans, unlike Democrats, actually try to stand at least offically for moral behavior.
And the guy resigned, what more do you want? Good riddance!
If Foley had been a Democrat, he would have run for reelection and acted like he was a victim of discrimination because of his sexual activiites if anyone dared to criticize what he did.

All I can say is that you a have a strange standard which mirrors the godless standards of the secular news media. As Christians we are called to higher standards- those of God! Whatever you did to the least of these, that you did unto Me! (Jesus said this in Matthew 25).

To all who voted Democrat and call them themselves believing Christians or Catholics-SHAME, SAHME on you! You will bring about more DEATH to our country and especially to the poor all around the world, since the Democrats want to work with the UN in decimating the populations of the poor and needy through genocidal abortion and contraception and sterilization programs. Pushing homosexuality around the world is also on their agenda. Destroying the family is also on the agenda.
In reality, Democrats hate the poor and want them dead. They have done a great snow job about their supposed empathy for the poor.

:bigyikes: Strong opinions here.
I would like to add that while Republicans have had the office for eight years now, abortion is still legal.
I don’t think it’s a matter of political party anymore. Abortion is not high on ANY politician’s agenda, no matter whether they’re pro-life or not.
It’s very sad but unfortunately very true. 😦

What about
  1. The Unborn Victims of Violence Act?
  2. The Partial Birth Abortion Act?
  3. The Parental Consent to Abortion Act?
  4. The Live Birth Abortions Act?
Perhaps I got the exact terminology wrong, but I venture to say that some progress has been made for unborn children under the Republicans.

Santorum is a great Senator and he is not corrupt. He’ s a Catholic homeschooling dad. Read his wife’s book, Letters to Gabriel. He really believes and lives pro-life beliefs, unlike a lot of you who voted for more death.

His support for Specter was not worth withdrawing support and giving it to someone who is not pro-life. Specter did cooperate and get two more good judges on the Supreme Court.

He spoke out strongly against the homosexual corruption of our country.

Jim Webb just took Virginia. Kudos to my native state. Dems now have both House and Senate.

Hope this election starts a new dialog across the country. President Bush and his advisors believed just rousing the Republican base would cement a conservative majority like in 2004. Well, it didn’t. Looks like, once again, getting the moderate (mushy middle if you prefer) vote counts in elections.

👍
Bush may have thought the base was being aroused, but if you look at the stats, that is not the case. In many races, it was a conservative (Dem and GOP) who won, or at least many who are or who claimed to be pro-life won. I think Emanuel did a masterfulo job in selecting candidates to run against GOP incumbents. It will be interesting to see how these new idealists fare with the ultra liberal House and Senate leadership. I do not mean idealists in a pejorative way, I just think all new congressional members go with high ideas and get corrupted after they get there. If they want to go anywhere and have money for their next election, they cater to the party elders.

The worst thing about the Republicans losing the House is that we will no longer have the Speaker from the State of Illinois to bring home bacon.

Too bad Bill Lipinski ain’t still around now that the Dems control things. He’d be sitting on a very nice perch right about this time.

Well, at least Durbin’s in the power structure.
And we still have Chicago elections to look forward to.
