Well, they were invented in America…
What is agenda posting about the leading article?I once got an infraction for agenda posting. All I see from OP is pro-EU anti-nationalism agenda posting. I guess “agenda posting” only applies in some circumstances.
Le Pen really wasn’t a great choice. If Trump and Brexit folks took a closer look at her, she has some terrible social policies.Meanwhile the fake news mainstream media painted Le Pen, who is lockstep with Bernie Sanders on economic and social issues, as a “far right extremist”.
I need to give you some serious kudos here Luigi, you’ve been warning other folks here on the American Right about their naivety vis-a-vis the likes of Le Pen and Wilders for a while now.Le Pen really wasn’t a great choice. That’s the problem with people not doing their homework and only seeing foreign politics through the prism of foreign relations and sovereignty.
Really, who thinks that we can defeat barbarism by killing ourselves from within?
That’s how many if not most of the major civilizations in the last 8000 years have fallen.
It would be nice, but it won’t. The biggest threats in France are being ignored. As you know, it’s happened before.I am no historian, but it seems to me that France has a history, or a tendency, to veer toward extremism. I think of its anti-Semitism under the Vichy regime and, before that, the Dreyfus affair, for example. Maybe, just maybe, France has come to realize that, despite its fierce nationalism bordering on jingoism, when any one group is persecuted, France, as a whole, suffers. I hope THAT day is coming rather than the one you predict.
Thinking past tense…French fried.Well, they were invented in America…
Which is proof positive that independent thought is not tolerated in the EU. Seems like the US, UK, Poland, Russia, and the Philippines are the only countries that don’t have a deal wish.I’ll say it again, Le Pen like Wilders, is just a liberal who recognizes the Islamic threat facing Europe.
“Fear always works!” - Mayor BellwetherI can see it coming now…“well, gee, guys, terrorism is the new normal. deal with it.”
That’s what we are gonna hear if this keeps up.
It would be difficult for LePen or Wilders would be able to win the long game. Just can’t build a society that brushes off or even tramples on the nuclear family.I’ll say it again, Le Pen like Wilders, is just a liberal who recognizes the Islamic threat facing Europe.
Yes, nationalism is more problematic in Europe than America. Milo Yiannopolus will also note that. It doesn’t mean the EU is the solution, but I think in France the winning ticket would have been to address the concerns directly with less of the nationalistic dimension.I don’t understand all the hyperbole. People write as if Macron is a madrassa graduate.
I look back at history. Look around 1913. And 1932. When nationalism rises in Europe, terrible things happen to France. The country still bears the scars of nationalistic fervor from over one hundred years ago.
Thank you!I need to give you some serious kudos here Luigi, you’ve been warning other folks here on the American Right about their naivety vis-a-vis the likes of Le Pen and Wilders for a while now.
You saw what direction the wind was blowing with them.
**Macron’s victory speech
Emmanuel Macron is about to speak to the cheering crowds on front of the Louvre, to the strains of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, the European anthem.**
Thank you my friends, he says. Thank you for being here this evening. Thank you for having fought with such courage for so many months because this evening you have won, France has won.
What has been accomplished has no precedent or equivalent, he says. People said it was impossible. Thank you for the efforts, and the risks some people took. I take full measure of the honour.
He says he is aware he has not been given a blank cheque by those who voted for him simply to keep out the extremes. He says he will stand by his engagement to protect France.
He says of those who voted for Le Pen that he understands their fear and their anger and will do all he can to ensure during the next five years that they have no further reason to vote for the extremes.
This evening, he says, it is Europe and the world who are watching us.
Macron says the task facing us is immense, and will start tomorrow. It involves reinforcing France’s economy, building new defences, ensuring the safety of all French citizens. It is a huge job and it will require more of the same audacity that has brought us this far.
This task will require the involvement and commitment of everyone, he says. It will require the courage of truth. It will require the building of a real and strong majority, a majority for change that the country needs and deserves.
We have the strength and the energy. We will not give in to fear, to division, to lies, to a love of decline or defeat. I know what I owe you, to my companions, my family, my friends. It will not be easy. The job wil be difficult.
I will tell you the truth but your fervour and your courage will carry me forward. I want the unity of our people and of our country. And finally, I will serve you with humility, with force, and in the name of our motto: Liberty, equality and fraternity.
I will serve you with love, he says. Vive la République, vive la France.
His wife Brigitte joins him on stage, on the verge of tears, with her children and grandchildren.
And that statement is, “I’m more loyal to Brussels bureaucrats, Frau Merkel, and migrants than to my own people. Let those who don’t want their heads chopped off eat cake”.Wow.
Macron is delivering his victory speech.
He walked on stage to the EU anthem - “Ode to Joy” - rather than the French national anthem. The BBC reporter found that fascinating, as do I.
Quite a statement.
No, its a message that patriotism is enhanced by the EU and that one can be a patriot without being pessimistic and inward-looking but instead optimistic and outward-looking.And that statement is, “I’m more loyal to Brussels bureaucrats, Frau Merkel, and migrants than to my own people. Let those who don’t want their heads chopped off eat cake”.
You own signature says that the EU demands their member nations to surrender their sovereignty. Macron has vowed sanctions upon Poland for their closed borders- and Poland is the only country in Europe without a terrorist attack in the last several years. That’s not a coincidence. No, its a message that patriotism is enhanced by the EU and that one can be a patriot without being a nationalist bigot.
