I sort of see the parallel. In this case, though, race mixing isn’t a sin,
Race mixing isn’t a sin now but it was then, according to the sincerely held convictions of the pressure group that successfully campaigned to have the book withdrawn.

No, of course it wasn’t . We all know that now. Nevertheless, the campaigners used that argument successfully at the time.

Harry Potter contains real spells and curses. It glorifies witchcraft, which is Satanic to the core. So many people have been seduced into thinking this is just harmless fantasy where kids pretend to be wizards, but it isn’t that simple.

There was some children who were fooling around by reciting one of the spells in Harry Potter, and 5 days later their house burnt down.
I knew someone who read one of the books and not more than three months later he cut himself shaving.
Exactly! Then there was the family who visited the “Wizarding World of Harry Potter “ at Universal Studios, and then got into a traffic accident on the way home! See?

Do you expect every character in every book to be perfect? The Bible is FULL of “characters” who committed grievous sins. Harry suffers consequences for lying. He’s an abused child…of course he’s going to have issues trusting authority figures. Narratives in books can be realistic.
…Yet, ultimately Harry is an example of a courageous, brave, and loving hero who lays down his life for his friends. Dumbledore eventually clarifies that Harry’s true power, which ultimately helps him overcome Voldemort, is love.

Did you read the rest of the thread before posting? As previous posts (mine and other’s) have noted, there is no actual Occult magic in the fictional world of Harry Potter. Ordinary people in the Potter world can’t do magic…only a special race of wizards who are born with innate, natural powers. There are no invocations of demons, no rituals to obtain unnatural powers…

I don’t see that the banning of “The Rabbit’s Wedding” was couched in religious terms.
If you have access to the newspapers that covered the case at that time, you will find extensive references to the “Race mixing is sin” slogan.

They are books.
Fantasy.
I am not a Harry Potter fan, but I have a problem with people wanting to remove books. I just do not think it is a good idea to remove books.

FYI - it wasn’t the priest that made this national (international) news. It was one or more parents that put this into the local news and because it dealt with HP and an international author, the story went viral.
The school was just doing what private schools do, responding to customers wishes and concerns in a reasonable manner. By reasonable, I mean there was no compelling reason to carry HP books, as oppose to equally valid books for that age. It is not like they are classic literature, or Newberry winners. Also, they weren’t banned from the school or prohibited to students.

I don’t fear books. I read books.
I have never read a Harry Potter book. I have never been into wizards and all that stuff.
I prefer a good detective novel or mystery.
Back when I was in college, there were a lot of harry potters around. Long haired dudes that smoked a lot of dope. 😂
All kidding aside, the surest way to get someone to read something is to try to ban it.
Want to make tooth brushing popular? Ban toothbrushes and tooth paste. Kids will be lining up to buy the stuff from smugglers. 🤫

The books may be popular, but they are not very good literature-wise.

But primarily: I don’t like the morality of the books. Harry Freakin’ Potter consistently lies to the adults who are trying to help him at every turn!
Harry winced as his scar throbbed.

“Harry, is anything wrong?” Dumbledore asked.

“No,” Harry lied.
Yea. Aside from all the hysteria, her books are not exactly great works of literature.
(my apologies to my wife who really enjoyed them).

I was that college student.
And the ironic thing is, our hippie English Lit professors fed us Tolkien without having a clue that Tolkien was evangelizing us without their knowledge. They simply thought we ought to be exposed to fantasy, hobbits, wizards, smoking pipes etc…

So far not seeing the references to sin, but I’m still looking. It’s nice of you to compare your fellow Catholics to the KKK though!

Not my fellow-Catholics, I think. They’re more likely to have been people from one or more of the Protestant churches.

Catholic Exchange - - I think that’s Catholic? This was posted there yesterday.
You also have the pop culture (music, movies) that promotes that occult as well as the best-selling ‘Harry Potter books.’ Tempting people to dabble in the occult is one of the ordinary activities of demons. Is like shooting fish in a barrel, demons tempt humans through ‘temptation’ all day long.

Did I mention Catholic Exchange in connection with the “Race mixing is sin” slogan? I don’t think so.
