Now, bear with me here. My favorite Catholic movie has to be “Dogma.”

Plus it has some great inside Catholic jokes , like the “Buddy Christ” poking fun at the protestant fear of the crucifix.
It is Dogma for me as well. It is a hilarious movie-I just love George Carlin in that red hat and his introducing the Buddy Jesus 👍 ! Yeah, that must be an inside joke for RCs because I definately don’t get that in the movie, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie lol

I quickly just skimmed this thread-it’s surprising that I haven’t seen Bing Crosby’s The Bells of Saint Mary’s.

I have to exclude “The Passion of The Christ” cause lets face it Mel Gibson had a tad of help with the scriptwriting.

“And the Academy Award for best screenplay goes to …”

I would vote for “The Third Miracle”. This is no “The Bells of Saint Mary’s” but rather an adult Catholic film. The film revolves around the process of beatification of a woman who is widely regarded in her community as a saint and is linked to a cure and a Madonna that is crying tears of blood. Ed Harris plays a priest stuggling with his vocation. Because he has so little faith his Bishop uses him to investigate this cause. Anne Heche plays the daughter of Helen O’ Regan (The women whose cause is being investigated). Harris is severly tempted when he finds that he is attracted to Heche. The portrayal of wordly church officials and how political and personal agendas affect the process of canonisation as well as Harris’s struggle to find and to keep his vows may trouble some. Like I said "The Bells of Saint Mary’s this aint. I don’t want to ruin the ending for anyone so I wont say more. I found it 100% orthodox.

Details are “The Third Miracle” Ed Harris, Anne Heche. Directed by Agnieszka Holland. 1999.

Any other votes for this or am I missing something?

What about Yours, Mine and Ours with Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball? Funny movie and the family is Catholic.

And also Cheaper By the Dozen (the original, not the remake), while not overtly Catholic has a great scene with a planned parenthood rep!!! too funny!

My favorite Catholic movie is The Ten Commandments. I think we need more good movies these days in stead of the trash on tv.

Qynne Callahan:mad: :clapping:

Hands down, no contest: Fred Zinnemann’s 1959 classic starring Audrey Hepburn, The Nun’s Story – love it for the exquisite and accurate portrayal of Religious life before V-2, for its sensitive portrayal of the struggles of conscience, for its brilliant cinematography in Belgium and Africa. :clapping:

The part I don’t like: Where Sister Luke leaves the community. Audrey Hepburn, having changed into lay clothes, presses a button on the wall, and the door bangs open onto a narrow alleyway. The camera remains fixed as Hepburn slowly walks down the narrow, wet brick alley into the morning light with nothing but the dowry her father had given when she entered the community and the address of a WW II underground resistance house in her head – because a student she had told about her departure had given it to her on a slip of paper, which she couldn’t risk carrying on her person.

I loved the movie Entertaining Angels - true story about Dorothy Day.

I, too, can’t quite think of *The Passion * as a mere movie. It is in a category of its own. *The Song of Bernadette * was the movie that first sparked my interest in Catholicism as a young girl. I know the Holy Spirit used that movie to start me on the path to conversion. One of my other favorites is In This House of Brede, an adaptation of the novel by Rumer Godden, which beautifully depicts cloistered Benedictine life.

DOGMA

It’s gross, iconoclastic and rude, but appeals to my sense of humor.

Greetings Church

I am sure it will be the Passion if I ever get a chance to see it.
For now, it is Song of Bernadette.

I also loved Fr Flannigans Boys Town. What a classic and what a story of human love.

The best movie in the world… ok, the world might be over-doing it a bit…

The Scarlet and the Black

Staring Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer… True Story…
Also Sir John Gielgood (as the Pope)

The Bishops Wife …

not catholic so to speak … but it is our families tradition to watch it once we put up our tree … it is wonderful … it is with Cary Grant

I’m with you…an excellent movie. The only thing that bothered me was that they blew the conflict between her and Cardinal Spellman out of proportion.

The Scarlet and the Black is also one of my favorites. I still have it programmed into TiVo to film the next time it comes on…and it’s taking WAY too long.

The Godfather, Part III is also one of my favorites…not for its portrayal of Catholicism per se, though its portrayal of JPI is phenomenal in its compassion…but rather I’m a huge Andy Garcia fan and he was absolutely wonderful in that movie.

Loved Boys Town with Spencer Tracy. We need to remember the good priests have done with children, not dwell on the bad.

Rudy with Sean Astin was probably my favorite contemporary Catholic movie. Can’t tell you how many times I cried through the movie.

There were also so many Bing Crosby priest movies that I’m not even sure I can break them apart. But the fact that he always dressed as a Jesuit in homage to his mentors at Gonzago always warms my heart.

Is it my Jesuit education coming out in remembering these films?
It must be. Those (Romero and The Mission) are the first two movies that came to my mind as well. Of course we also watched the Star Wars trilogy in one of my Jesuit High School religion classes as well.

For those of you who want to see the movie “Therese” or want to learn more about it, make sure you visit their website: Therese Movie

Also, be sure you click on the “See Therese” link to show interest for the movie in your area.
They don’t have access to the funds that “The Passion” had for advertising and they need people to fill out the web form to show enough support to get into theaters.

For me every Easter I have to sit and watch : The Ten Commandments, Song of Bernadette, Fatima miracles, Romero. Marcelino Pan y Vino and as soon as it is on video: The Passion!

I’ve seen about 30% of the movies mentioned and I’d have to agree with all.

From a quirky point of view I can’t believe that noone has mentioned Monty Python’s Quest for the Holy Grail and Life of Brian. 😃

I liked “The Exorcist” for it’s portrayal of Priest’s, this film came out at just the right amount of time after Vatican II, when so many things Catholic were being downplayed within the Church, this film was an antidote for that.

Clifton Webb and William Holden as priests in communist China who escape the advancing communists with a communist official and his pregnant wife. what is the name of it?
