Don’t know if I missed it along the way (as far as I read, and read I did…long, long way down), but…anyone remember The Shoes of the Fisherman? I saw the movie and then went out and got the book and became glued to that too.

In my opinion betters are Becket, Barrabas and a movie about the Virgin Mary, Mary queen of heaven I think so, that goes out the asumption, greetings

Has anyone seen the movie, “Evelyn”? mgm.com/evelyn/
It’s based on a true story and the acting is wonderful, especially the little girl (Sophie Vavasseur) who plays Evelyn. Aidan Quinn and Pierce Brosnan also are great.

Another one not mentioned is “Heaven Knows Mr. Allison” with Deborah Kerr and Robert Mitchum

The Passion of the Christ

The Lord of the Rings

Wide Awake

“Wide Awake” drove me crazy. It was a good story except that the little boy goes to a Catholic school, is supposedly being raised by Catholic parents…he speaks to the priest, the nuns, his mother and father, and no body can help him find God? I think the movie paints a pretty sad picture of Catholic culture. Didn’t anybody else get that sense?

Is Zefarelli’s (sp?) Jesus of Nazareth considered Catholic?
BINGO, I was waiting for that one. I’m partial to Jesus of Nazareth–great actors and a dignified respectful reading of the Gospel. I liked it long before I became Catholic and I swear I read somewhere that it was approved and recommended by the Vatican.

The Left Hand of God starring Humphrey Bogart. Great story. Gives a very reverent and manly view of the priesthood, celibacy, etc.

The Song of Bernadette Makes me cry every time.

The Original Angels in the Outfield (not the stupid remake) Set partially against the backdrop of a wonderful Catholic orphanage.

The Bells of St. Mary’s It has Ingrid Bergman - 'nuf said!

THE SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN!

Excellent. Saw it for the first time with my grandmother when I was about 12. I cried at the part when he was elected Pope and really prayed it would happen to me one day!

To be serious the film is soooooo prophetic. The priests name in the film is Kiril Lacota (our present Pope? Karol Wojtyla similar?..ah maybe not) Anyway he was the first Pope to be elected who came from a Communist Country in this case Russia. John Paul II also came from communist Poland as it was at the time of his election. The reaction of the crowd in the film to the news is exactly what was noted in St Peters Square in 1978. Shock, silence for a moment then great applause and acceptence.

If you haven’t seen it do so. It’s wonderful and so heartwarming. Just see the similarities.

Second to this would be MASS APPEAL with Jack Lemmon. Anyone see this little gem?? About a seminarian who had to leave the seminary because of his misguided zeal?? Again very good stuff.

“Maximilian Saint of Auschwitz” was a great portrait of the Saint and showed Leonardo DeFilippis’ incredible talent.

“Song of Bernadette” of course.

“The Quiet Man”

“Dogma”

and an old one that I was reminded of last week,

“Hill Number One”

I liked the movie “Brother Sun,Sister Moon,” which was based on the life of St Fracsis of Assisi. Sir Alec Guinness (Obi-Wan Kenobi) played Pope Innocent III. I also liked the Movie “AD,” even though it was a low budget movie that I heard got bad reviews. “The Passion of the Christ” will probably go down as my favorite Catholic movie even though “Song of Bernadette” is a pretty close second.

I want to see the new movie about St. Therese. Does anyone know when and if it will come to DVD?

I’ll also be honest and admit that I saw “Trouble With Angels” with Haley Mills. It really wasn’t that bad of a movie.

The Song of Bernedette
Joan of Arc (Lee Lee Sobieski)
Becket
John Paul II, The Millennial Pope - not exactly a movie but a 2 hour Frontline presentation from 1998 that I bought on DVD

I just found the movie, “Evelyn” at Wal-Mart for $7.50 if anyone is interested. Nothing like replying to my own post. :o

What was the name of a tv movie in the early 80’s (1982 to 1985?) about the life of John Paul II? It was on a major network on Easter Sunday and we had a slight earthquake in the Philadelphia area! I wondered if it was a sign from God because I was praying at the time about how best to serve Him!)

The Passion of the Christ (God, have mercy on me a sinner)
Jesus of Nazareth (watched with Mormons who laughed at baptism by sprinkling)
The Scarlet and the Black (oh, the ending!)
Going My Way (the mother’s music box!)
The Trouble with Angels (the last race at Pimlico!)
The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima (look at the sun!)
The Sound of Music (climb every mountain!)

That might be the film, “The Pope” starring Albert Finney as Pope John Paul II. I have it on video.

Bear with me for this one:

I submit “Spiderman 2.” Okay, not technically a Catholic film, but the themes are oh so Catholic. The hero is a self-sacrificing young man who puts aside what society tells him will make him happy in order to serve the good of the people. He tries to fight against his instinct to do what is good & seems happy for a while but ends up going back to self-sacrifice in order to do what is morally right. Even though he is mocked and slandered, he still continues to fight the good fight because he knows the sacrifice is worth it.

A bit of a stretch, granted… but a refreshing look at a true hero.

Oh a caution, if you haven’t seen it: The hospital scene with “Doc Oc” is too scary for your young ones.

I haven’t seen too many of the movies mentioned here, though I love The Passion of the Christ and The Sound of Music. I did stumble across a great little movie a few months ago. It is called The Maldonado Miracle. No sex, drugs or violence–just a heart warming little catholic movie about rediscovering one’s faith. Peter Fonda plays a priest, if you can believe that, and it is Salma Hayek’s directorial debut. Great little movie! I recommend it.

Lots of praise for the movie the passion.
I bought the movie the Passion on video a few months back, but I still havent watched it, I think it may be to painful / difficult to watch. Jesus who gave and loved so much to suffer such pain.

" The Ten Commandments" was a very good movie.👍
Also the new movie on St. Therese, " The Story Of A Soul " looks very interesting. Does anyone have any comments on it??

The song of Bernadette and the miracle of our lady of fatima, all time favorites 🙂

In 1973 Hallmark Hall of Fame had a movie version of a Paul Gallico story called “The Small Miracle”. It is about a boy who lives in Assisi who is an orphan, and whose best friend is a donkey. The donkey becomes ill and he believes if he can take the donkey to the crypt of St. Francis that the donkey will get well. The story recounts his faith that he can get the approval, and his journey to Rome to do so. There is a surprise ending which still brings goosebumps.
