Certainly Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton are near the top. Some of the “great” rock guitarists, such as Eddie Van Halen, have never really appealed to me that much, as too many of them just never have enough subtlety and taste. Like others on this thread, I think some of the country greats are always underrated in lists of great guitarists. Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, and Chet Atkins have already been mentioned, and they are way up there on my list. Willie Nelson is underrated as a guitarists.
Back to rock, the guy is really weird, but Lindsey Buckingham is really good.

I’ve always liked Steve Vai. He can make sounds come from a guitar that I didn’t know were possible.

And Criss Oliva.

And Jani Liimatainen from Sonata Arctica.

Buckethead is the most talented guitarist I have ever heard.

For classical style guitar, if you ever get a chance to attend one of John Michael Talbot’s missions/concerts, go very early or volunteer to help. You want to hear him rehearse and soundcheck.

Steve Howe
Steve Hackett
Tony Iommi
Frank Zappa
Roine Stolte
Jan Akkerman
Nick Barrett
Robert Fripp

Brad paisley is another present day country guitarist who is very good.

I have to second srv and Eddie Van Halen.

Great thread!

Must add:

Folk/fingerstyle: Leo Kottke, John Fahey

Rock: Joe Satriani

Classical: John Williams

Hawaiian Slack Key: Cyril Pahinui

I thought about this some more, and I have to say I too agree, those two are at the top. They are the most tasteful guitar slingers out there. They are both getting old and not as good as they used to be.

I lean more to those guitarists that use fills more than solos. Maybe more rhythm than lead. So my favorite guitarists are probably not mentioned as much…

Curtis Mayfield
Steve Cropper
Pops Staples

And the Motown session guys…Robert White, Eddie Willis and Joe Messina.

Speaking of session guitarists, what about Tommy Tedesco who was part of the Wrecking Crew and whose playing can be heard on many of the 60s and 70s hits.
