Love this thread. I have to 2nd Roy Clark and Glen Campbell, I suspect they are underrated because they were so talented in so many other ways as well. Two gentle lovable souls.

Yes, that’s Gerard Depardieu. No doubt about it. But is it really Vladimir Putin? Remarkable! I never heard until now about his musical talent.

One of my favorites is Angus Clarke in his amazing take on Kitaro’s Kokoro. It is at around 9 minutes into this with Kitaro also on guitar, that he suddenly produces amazing work.

I watched a video of him playing. He has some unique technique. That slide technique at about 250 into the video is pretty cool.

I’ve never listened to any grapelli other than what I have seen in this video and maybe one or two others with Django Reinhardt.

I have a childhood memory of him (Stephane Grappelli) appearing as a musical guest on ‘The Muppet Show,’ such was the scope of his pop culture exposure.

I think George contributed a lot to the Beatles’ immortal hits in the form of ingenious guitar licks that he somehow came up with, again and again (of course he also wrote some of those songs too).

If you’re a guitarist, listening to these guys is almost depressing, they’re so good!

Some great choices. Here’s some that spring to my mind.

Wata from Boris
Matt Pike
Michael Gira and Norman Westberg (less is more)
John Cale
Efrim Menuck
Scott Kelly and Steve von Till
James Blackshaw
Howlin’ Wolf
Sammy Duet
Glenn Branca

First, Eddie Van Halen is great at one thing. That doesn’t make him a great guitarist. It just makes him great at one thing and unfortunately, that one thing is all gimmick.

Second, Brad Paisley is an entertaining guitar player, but among guitar players, he’s consider to be very sloppy, technically.

My great uncle was jazz mandolinist and guitarist, Tiny Moore. His wife, Deannie, was my grandfather’s sister. He did an album with Grappelli called “Back To Back”.

Years later, when I was in college, a neighbor and I went to see Stephane Grappelli in Philadelphia. Jethro Burns came out and sat in with the band for several songs. It was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

Saw him one final time, just before he died. He, Johnny Gimble, Joe Venutti, and Gene Elder are four of my favorite fiddle players.
