I find it simply astonishing how eager some schools are to destroy the innocence of children.

If you can’t afford your kids to go to a Catholic school from k-12th then I would suggest finding a way to make it work for home schooling, if not with yourself than with someone in your parish if you are lucky to find someone? Keeping children away from the governments influence (as well as medias influence) is the only way to give them better chances at making it in life. My generation was hit hard but looking at the generations after, with the stuff thats forced down their throats, I pray for the future of this world.
My thoughts exactly. My 11 year old son’s driving loves are football and playing Lego Star Wars on X-Box. The idea of girls doesn’t even make him blink. Makes me wonder what the he…ck is wrong with our country where we need to make sure 10 and 11 year olds need to know about proper condom use. I have no intention of putting my kids back into the public indoctrination system to turn them into mindless little sex-crazed tax slaves.

Did you somehow miss the fact that sex is illegal for 10 year olds? In some states it is called statutory rape, or child molestation, or contributing to the delinquency of a minor. There is no such thing as “proper” use of a condom by a ten year old, and teaching that there is qualifies as a moral judgement that no public school should be making.
Sex for 10 year olds is only illegal if their partner is older than them (i.e. I’ve never heard of a 12 year old charged with statutory rape (exception–California, both minors would be guilty of a misdemeanor)). Moreover, the state is not advocating for statutory rape, as this is something the 10 year olds do not initiate, as they are the victims. What education does allow is for them to understand the seriousness of the situation and what details might be important to tell people.

Educating them about condoms does not constitute advocacy. This is why some schools are allowed to have classes about the bible: so long as the material covered is factual and free from religious conclusions, neither a bible class nor a health class covering condoms represents governmental advocacy for a moral position.

  1. A condom placed over the muzzle of your rifle will prevent water from collecting in the barrel, thus preventing a potenially fatal misfire when the weapon is discharged.
  2. A condom packed with C-4 is useful for exploding heavy locks, gates, enemy vehicle engines, and other demolition purposes—but improperly employed, can cause serious or fatal wounds and make you a casualty.
I believe the sound effects engineers from the Lord of the Rings covered their microphones in condoms so they could submerge/bury them and get recordings of very unique sounds.

TEN YEAR olds DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT, need to know how to use a condom! most of them haven’t hit puberty, definitely are NOT interested in girls/boys yet and most assuredly are NOT DATING!

Why would a TEN YEAR old need to know how to use a condom?!?!?

Texas school districts have girls as young as 13 that are pregnant. I suppose they might wait until the students are 12, but perhaps the schools have some sort of health class that is already offered in the 5th grade.

You answered me with a NYTimes article. That is not an answer, Tell me, not with an article, WHY TEN YEAR OLDS need to learn about condoms! *** Is it because they are expected*** to have sex at 12 years old? 13? 15? Why would they need to learn how to use a condom? what about those who actually will have SELF CONTROL?

Don’t give me nonsense about 13 year olds that are pregnant.

Tell me why a TEN YEAR old needs to be taught “proper condom use” when most are not interested in girls! Most haven’t even hit puberty.

my ten year old nephew likes Jets football and his XBOX. Luckily he goes to a Catholic school so he won’t be given this type of test.

🍿 I think I’ll be waiting for a** clear **answer for a LONG TIME.

Why does “interest in girls” have anything to do with it? Should we wait until kids have an interest in history or math before we teach it to them?

I see no evidence from the OP that proper condom use is being taught to 10 year olds. In fact, the test question makes it seem like the “how to” is not taught: they are checking to make sure the child knows where to go to get “how to” information. This is actually fairly clever. If a child does approach a teacher/doctor/parent about condom use at around this age, it will likely trigger some intervention and probably give adults an opportunity to discourage the very young from sexual behavior. In other words, telling a kid to ask someone when he does become interested in sex means that your little Timmy doesn’t have to think about how to use condoms until he does become interested in girls. Once he does, he will have been taught to ask an adult (most likely you) about it.

Really don’t know where to start with this one…

As a parent of a 5th grader, I see no need for my daughter to be able to answer those sort of questions. I find it reprehensive that a school would suggest to a 10 year old that it is acceptable to turn to condoms or sex if they are ever in the “situation.”

That aside, let’s talk about the maturity and comprehension level of these children… and what is the message that the school is sending to them at this impressionable age. Regardless of the intent, how is it going to present to a 10 year old?

As I have said in many posts before on this topic, let’s get out of the business of teaching our kids to circumvent reasonability and decry values. Condoms are a Band-Aid, nothing more. Let’s get back to those causative factors that are really the catalyst for teen pregnancy. Not knowing how to use a condom at 10 is not where the problem in our society is coming from, but I am sure there are several who would argue it is perpetuating the issue. We continue to address the result and not the problem.

(Leaving out the obviously morality issue…) Ok maybe we should teach ten year old’s how to properly operate an automobile. I mean we’ve all seen those news stories where some kid drives off in the family car when he can barely see over the steering wheel. I’m mean just in case…even though a ten year old is not prepared to handle the responsibility of driving.

Really? Ten year old’s need to know how to use a condom? Because a miniscule percentage of ten year old’s may actually engage in sex - all ten year old’s needed to be instructed in how to use one? Where else do we use the same kind of logic -on an otherwise adult activity. The same stupid argument, gets more stupid all the time. Sex education prevents pregnancy -if we start younger it will prevent more pregnancy. What has happened? The age keeps dropping on teen pregnancy, on sexually active children. And yet the argument is always “well we need to start younger.” And the younger we go, the younger the kids have sex. And some how they don’t connect the dots.

We need to stop scandalizing children and let kids be kids.

Old enough to either get pregnant or get someone pregnant.
I’m sure you remember the story from a couple of yrs ago of the 9 yr old girl in Brazil who was old enough to get pregnant. There was quite a fury after she was raped and her mother wanted her to undergo an abortion rather than forcing her young child to carry the pregnancy to term. And the Catholic Church got involved with excommunications.

In any case while being 10 is not what is was in my day, simple math shows us 10 yr olds still soon become teenagers. And while abstinance is a laudable goal and aspiration for us to have for them, and for parents to instill, reality is still reality. Sometimes even if children are raised with certain values, peer pressure can play a role or for whatever other reason children do not always live up to what their parents have tried to instill in them once they are outside of the home environment. I would rather they be aware of protection sooner rather than later, before they can become pregnant and we have more MTV Teen Mom television series, or who knows what worse.

Do kids know what cigarettes are and what they are for? Yes, but that hardly motivates them to try them. If a parent has a problem with condoms or premarital sex, that is something they should instill in their children. This sort of education can hardly be considered an undermining of parental authority.
Yes. And of course, they should know what a gun is and how to use it, and they should also know what bombs are and how to use these bombs to blow up buildings and such. After all, they see this all the time on TV and this is something that parents should be dealing with since they are allowing their children to watch TV. (???!!!???)

Why is it that public schools seem to be insistent on pushing immorality on children? It is bad enough that schools teach “comprehensive sex education” in which kids are basically taught that it is okay to fornicate and everything so long as you do it in a “safe” way. Never mind the fact that it is immoral and sinful to fornicate! It is even worse that some schools actually promote the homosexual agenda. The above are definitely good enough reasons why if I ever get married and have children that may child won’t step foot in a public school.

Again, this is an outlier situation. It should not dictate the norm. The majority of nine year old girls aren’t anywhere near puberty, yet.

Condoms don’t really “protect” anybody from anything. They have a very high failure rate among teens, which means that if we tell kids, “We don’t want you to have sex, but if you do, wear a condom for protection,” the message the kids get is, “If I wear a condom, it’s okay for me to have sex,” and the next thing you know, his condom breaks, or falls off (because I’m pretty sure they don’t make child-sized condoms), he gets his 12 year old “girl friend” pregnant, and voila, another teen pregnancy statistic - and/or another STD, and/or another victim of AIDS.

Instead, we need to teach kids, “You will be ready to have sex when the two of you are married and ready to raise the children who will be born from your sexual union.”

You are so old fashioned.

Well yes statistically they might have a higher failure rate than lets say the pill. But I’m pretty sure, well ok I’m absolutely 100% certain, 👍 you don’t want those used either. I have no problem with teaching kids that. Now the question remains in the real world is every kid always going to heed their parents’ teaching?

Let me put it this way - they are far more likely to heed it if they receive it and hear it, than if they don’t, or if the message gets watered down and confused with opposing messages.

(Part of my motivation to remain chaste during my own teen years was the fact that I knew that my mother would kill me if she ever caught me having sex. Parents have a much stronger influence than they realize, I think.)

As if there were no out of wedlock pregancies back in the olden days.
Ahhh, so, we should just encourage our 10 year olds to screw their brains out. Maybe we should teach the kids the safe way to shoot up heroin while we’re at it.

As a product of the ‘olden days,’ I can only offer my personal experience. In my high school, we had no sex education whatever. In my high school, there were no teen pregnancies. None. Zero.
