When they say they are monitoring people who worked with Duncan what does that mean exactly? If she was monitored how was she able to board a commercial aircraft and fly to cleveland for the weekend?
Thank you. This is helpful.*People remain infectious as long as their blood and body fluids, including semen and breast milk, contain the virus. Men who have recovered from the disease can still transmit the virus through their semen for up to 7 weeks after recovery from illness.

Beyond this point they can’t detect the virus, so I think that means the body cleared it out. I don’t think it lies dormant where you will always test positive, but I’m not sure. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can post.
You’re welcome. :tiphat:Thank you. This is helpful.![]()

Yes, I just saw they updated the link I had posted. And Reuters is saying reuters.com/article/2014/10/15/us-health-ebola-usa-idUSKCN0I40UE20141015
New Texas nurse with Ebola had fever on airliner.
Its like we are stuck in a house of mirrors with TWO villains - Ebola AND CDC.Why is it, everytime I turn around, I read of more slips through the cracks.
Exactly. I’m pretty angry about this. My husband travels every week for his job. This nurse KNEW she had the potential to be carrying this virus. Her employer knew. The CDC knew. How on earth did she take a weekend away? How did she board the plane at all, let alone with a 99.5? I’m furious and terrified about the next weeks as my husband will make about five or six more flights around the US. Not feeling confident in any of them right now. When they say they are monitoring people who worked with Duncan what does that mean exactly? Yes the news are saying that she should not have traveled and are looking for the other passengers in the plane. This is not an official medical opinion, I don’t know if this is true, disclaimer.
It’s sad, it seems to me, once someone gets ebola, even if they recover, they will still have the virus in them. I don’t know. I hope this doesn’t prevent this young nurse from ever having children or something. In this way, I guess with HIV, once you have it, you always have it.
I’m sorry you are going through such a stressful time. I’m pretty mad too, mostly frustrated. We need to use our best judgment and do our own research.Exactly. I’m pretty angry about this. My daughter-in-law works in the airline industry and is pregnant right now. She flew to the midwest last week on a business trip and she and my grandson left yesterday for Pennsylvania. I did not want them to go. Now this news today! I am angry too. They said she flew back because she is planning her wedding so she obviously does not seem aware of how ebola works or didn’t realize the risk. What is the protocol for monitoring these healthcare workers? This is total incompetence!Exactly. I’m pretty angry about this. My husband travels every week for his job. Very good question, obviously proper protocols were not taken. Why in the world was she allowed to fly ?!! shouldn’t the healthcare workers who cared for Thomas Duncan be under quarantine for at least 21 days??
No one knows what is going on or what to do.Why in the world was she allowed to fly ?!! shouldn’t the healthcare workers who cared for Thomas Duncan be under quarantine for at least 21 days??
I agree. Very well said. It takes a lot of education to be a doctor and a nurse. These people aren’t stupid. Ebola has been around a long time and everyone in the medical field knows how contagious and dangerous it is. Common sense should tell them what protocol they sjould follow. The CDC director has been overconfident.I think that everyone concerned bears some responsibility for this situation. First Duncan, for flying after his exposure, next the hospital for being woefully unprepared, the city and state authorities for seemingly planning on the fly, and the CDC for not having a mechanism for assessing preparedness of health facilities before any Ebola case got here, at the very least since the first patients were transported back from Liberia.
Health personnel and the public are not free of responsibility either: thousands of people dying from a disease - some literally breathing their last breath on the roadsides - and we just live life as usual, concerned with our busy lives and trivial pursuits. How could we ALL not be familiar now with the “whole body” protective gear and dressing/undressing rituals being used in Liberia? A major disaster happens and we all are stuck to the TV - what happened with Ebola? Is there a level of disengagement that we are now paying for?
The nurses union spokespeople got angry when it seemed nurses were being blamed, but where was the union to ensure that *before *any cases occurred, their members had the same level of protection that the WHO and MSF is facilitating for Liberian nurses? Where were the city’s disaster preparedness personnel and what were they doing before the need for decontamination of homes and waste disposal arose?
Ebola has been raging for MONTHS in a country where people travel to and from everyday, at the very least, there should have been preparation for the inevitable spread of this disease. It’s all well and good for the media to bash the CDC, but their own personnel have witnessed (and some have actually experienced) standard protective procedures and their use, so why no investigative reporting on what protection is or is not being made available here? Now some are asking for a czar? One czar! Whatever happened to planning, collaboration and personal responsibility?
Overconfidence and lack of preparation… An “F” to just about everyone who could have helped make the Ebola response a success. But now there is at least the hope that we’ll have learned what is lacking.
It probably has not been around for a long time but a doctor should be humble and work for people not have people work for them.Somebody at Presby hospital messed. It could of been the CEO or a MD but somebody dropped the ball.I agree. Very well said. It takes a lot of education to be a doctor and a nurse. These people aren’t stupid.
