Health officials say a health care worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital who provided care for the Ebola patient hospitalized there has tested positive for Ebola in a preliminary test.

There was mention of this recurring in west Africa due to consumption of “bush meat” I think it was termed …
Anyway, God forbid this gets into our beef supply.

Like I said in my post, even after he was admitted to the hospital, the first couple of days the people entering his room wore surgical scrubs-n not hazmat suits. In the article I read anyway. Until his blood test confirmed it, I don’t think they actually took it seriously that he possibly had ebola.

I watched a news story while ebola was still contained in Africa and the news journalist went to a few markets in new york city and found you could buy imported bush meat! I believe that should be stopped!

Blame it on Bush!

Uh, don’t Africans deplane on the East Coast? Why no Ebola victims there? IS ELLIS ISLAND ready for a 21-day quarantine? Plum Island should be available if they can crawl over the developers reclaiming this animal quarantine island for Hoof & Mouth disease. The new Hoof & Mouth center is being sited in the middle of Kansas to eradicate all Republican beef once a leak takes place…This administration is pure toxic waste and so covertly genocidal that even the Republicans are fooled.

Recent news reports that the nurse came into contact with Duncan during his second visit AND she was in full protective haz - mat gear.

They think the woman in Spain, thankfully improving, took off her protective gear and may have done as little as touch her eye area.

Does anyone know how the nurse in spain is doing or if they determined the man who died in Greece had ebola?
The nurse went from being on a ventilator to being able to sit up, so that is really good news.

As to the other man, they are saying he tested negative for Ebola. The way that story developed is very puzzling.

First it was reported that officials had good reason to believe he had been infected with Ebola due to consistent symptoms. They quarantined the entire hotel. His traveling partner was also showing symptoms. Officials had some reason to believe he had recently been to Africa, yet his friend (and possibly family?) said he hadn’t been there in 6 years.

Then it was reported that he most likely did not have Ebola, but officials believed it was some type of hemorrhagic fever.
Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) are a group of illnesses caused by four families of viruses. These include the Ebola and Marburg, Lassa fever, and yellow fever viruses. VHFs have common features: they affect many organs, they damage the blood vessels, and they affect the body’s ability to regulate itself. Some VHFs cause mild disease, but some, like Ebola or Marburg, cause severe disease and death.
VHFs are found around the world. Specific diseases are usually limited to areas where the animals that carry them live. For example, Lassa fever is limited to rural areas of West Africa where rats and mice carry the virus.
The risk for travelers is low, but you should avoid visiting areas where there are disease outbreaks. Because there are no effective treatments for some of these viral infections, there is concern about their use in bioterrorism.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
I should also add that arenaviruses are also classified as VHFs.

Days later we read that the man who died had only been “joking” about having Ebola.

We then find out he tested negative for Ebola and that it was possible he died from a drinking binge despite the fact that his wife and good friend said that couldn’t be true and that he drank no more or less than anyone else. While it is true he could have been a closet alcoholic, I would imagine that had he died from alcohol, his eyes would have turned yellow before he bled out. I would think his friend or the officials would have noticed that right away. As far as I know yellow eyes are not a symptom of Ebola, but I could be wrong. The internet allows us all to be armchair scientists.

I can’t help but wonder if the poor man died from Marburgh or another similar virus. It was reported that his friend and others in the hotel had been showing symptoms as well which we would not see if this was solely due to alcohol. I suppose I should take off my tin foil hat and just accept what the official story is. If anyone else in the hotel comes down with the same symptoms we will find out.

I had read all of the above last week. If anyone would like a reference to the above statements, please let me know. A simple “macedonia + joking” or “macedonia + hemorrhagic fever” should bring up the articles though.

I’d also like to edit an earlier post where I mentioned the people of Greece. I am aware now that Macedonia is its own country and that apparently we have moved on from the times of ancient Greece. Derp. 😃

I’ve been thinking about this poor woman all day. The interwebs are full of commentary about how she could have gotten ill, and many people are saying she must have made a mistake with her hazmat suit and therefore gotten herself infected. I think that’s unlikely, for a couple of reasons. A hospital nurse in intensive care definitely knows how to handle her personal protective equipment. In this situation she would have been especially careful. It’s cruel for strangers to basically be saying, she did it to herself. Something happens with this virus when it is at the peak in the patient- super infectious perhaps? I pray she is able to be treated.

Well, according to our government, the only way she could have gotten Ebola was from direct contact, so people are trying to piece together what might have happened.

I think the easiest answer is that the government is passing out flawed information on whether Ebola can be transmitted through the air and the need for direct contact which is already disproven in that you can touch a place where an Ebola victim touched and get the disease that way as well.

At this point I don’t really trust any statement coming from the hospital in Dallas or the government.
The article I read friday or saturday with a timeline of events said they staff did not wear hazmat suits until the blood tests confirmed he had ebola which took at least a day and a half to get the results after he was admitted. So if they were wearing surgical scrubs, masks, etc., it seems she could have been infected within the first 36 hours.

It seems like statements are released then updated or corrected.
In other words both the hospital and CDC change their version of events as needed.

It is clear we were not prepared for a patient with ebola.

The hospital was very overconfident. When they had the press conference that Friday when mr. Duncan had Ebola, how the county judge and the mayor of Dallas where like it’s I’m guys with smiles and confidence. Today, they seemed serious and somber. The city has to be careful as the CDC and the state health agency stated that the hospital did some breach of protocol.

Considering they have had ebola in west africa since March or April, I think it odd that we did not have an infected person travel here before the end of September. The CDC should have been sending letters of protocol by July or August at the latest.

I wonder how many other people this nurse might have infected.

This is a sad situation. I feel bad for that nurse.

She should not be blamed for her own infection. With certainty, the blame rests with another individual for bringing the virus into the country in the first place. We should have closed our borders to all who had traveled through an Ebola country YESTERDAY.

The virus can be transmitted airborne. I will not change my tune on this. Watch, though, when the CDC can no longer support their lie of “it’s not airborne”, they will cover themselves by saying, “oh, look, the viruses mutated and now it’s airborne”. Wait for it, it’s coming. And no, the virus does not have to mutate to be transmitted through the air. It is that way already.

Furthermore - where are the 4 people who were living in the apartment and moved to a “donated house in a gated community”? Has anyone seen or heard from them? I don’t see how they could not have been infected. I wonder if they are really in a house somewhere, or if they’ve been taken to a secret government facility so their infections could be hushed up or prevented somehow to prevent a panic.

I’m not nuts, I don’t think (well, maybe I am, a little) but I’ve done a ton of reading on bioweapons development and scientific discovery regarding pathogenic microbes. I’ve been asked to give a talk on Ebola at my college, but I told them I cannot spout the party line that it’s not transmitted through the air. It’s not an airborne virus in the traditional sense, but you can get it from aerosolized body fluids.

I’m surprised we haven’t seen more cases, and I want to know what is going on with those 4 people who shared the apartment with him. Last I read they were grieving his loss, but that they didn’t have tv or internet access. Suspicious, since I can’t think of any McMansion in a gated community that does NOT have a satellite dish or cable. It’s as if these people have been disappeared, and any contact with the outside world has been cut off. Has anyone heard anything more about them?

The family who Duncan was staying with said they want privacy now.

I too am surprised none of them are showing any symptoms.
I am glad, but surprised.

.
I would have expected it sooner too. I’m surprised that those who can afford a ticket haven’t already come, especially after the recovery of the doctors brought back from Africa. An epidemic in your own country, successful treatment in the USA, enough money for a ticket and knowing someone “over there” can be powerful motivators especially combined with fear and the instinct to survive.

I was also wondering why protocols had not already been put in place, why so many nurses still haven’t been trained and all I can come up with is that they (CDC, Obama, etc.) really believed it wasn’t coming here … (the other scenario is too horrible to contemplate) and honestly I’m flabbergasted bc I always thought they knew they were lying! Now its looking as if they are just stupid? But how can they rise to such positions of power by being stupid? And I find myself at the … (scenario that’s too horrible to contemplate) … again.

I loved your post, Tigerkitty. I want to comment, but must wait until tomorrow!
