Jesus
Holy Mary
Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,

Raised voices? Not good. Thankfully, your prayers make it rare in Boise’s Catholic street evangelization apostolate. And a special thank you to each of you who sent or posted a prayer for protection or words of encouragement last week. Also a shout-out to the Rosary maker group who sent me 30 black Rosaries! You are each more helpful than you can know!
  • The session was difficult. People were playing in the fountain, but were rowdier than usual. Also, the percentage of people who ignored or rejected the offer of a free Rosary seemed higher than typical.
  • “Sam”, though, responded positively – perhaps 30 years old, long-haired, tanned, and nice-looking. He accepted a Rosary, but declined its pamphlet or a map to area parishes. Sam said he “had connections with a Catholic priest” and therefore didn’t need any more information. Please pray for him?
  • Among my last visitors was a woman, let’s call her “Molly”, who had a horror of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Molly grudgingly acknowledged that Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus, but couldn’t see anything at all special about her. She condemned Catholics for idolatry but didn’t want to hear our side. Molly also had her own theory about what languages were used in Biblical times. Since her theory contradicts that of mainstream Biblical scholarship, I asked her what Bible College she had attended. Indignantly, she replied that she had a Bible and that was enough.
    • In the middle of my visit with Molly, two men who had passed the table several times, came up to the table and stood (protectively?). My impression was that they were both “slow normal”. I offered them each a Rosary and pamphlet, which they accepted. I don’t remember, though, either of them actually speaking. My explanation of the Rosary to them was hurried, I’m afraid, because I didn’t want Molly to lose interest and leave. It was a slightly odd encounter, and I later wondered if they could have been guardian angels.
  • Returning to Molly, things were now calmer but she had decided not to accept the Rosary she had tentatively picked out. She said if I disagreed with her I was calling God a liar. I said, no, I was only calling her misinformed. Perhaps not the most useful response.
  • Still, despite chaotic environment and apathetic passersby, I gave away 7-10 Rosaries, and 1 Miraculous Medal.
Please pray for us again today? I plan to head downtown in an hour or so from now. Please ask God to send people to us with hearts prepared to perceive their need for Jesus Christ and the Church. Please ask God that our efforts today bear much good fruit for His Kingdom.

Even when things don’t go as we like, God is lovingly present and confirms our attempts to evangelize. So thank you again for all of your prayers and other support for our apostolate. In turn, may God protect and greatly bless you and yours!

God has called you to peace (1 Cor 7:15).

P.S. Space is limited here, but feel free to check out our blog for further details from the session. Remember, we’re relying on your prayers! streetevangelization.com/boise/blog

People approached before we called! So thank you for your prayers for Boise’s Catholic street evangelization effort! God heard. And another thank you to those of you who took the time to send or post an encouraging word or prayer this last week. You are much appreciated!
  • Two boys in their early teens approached as we set up. One chatted amiably with evangelist Mike. The other, though, started muttering anti-Christian and nouveau-atheist phrases . So we addressed the issues. Quick with glib anti-Catholic one-liners, they’d change the subject as soon as we called their attention to a weakness in their reasoning. Subjects? The existence of God, the Bible as unreliable source of Truth and (paradoxically) the demand to depend on “the Bible alone”, abortion “rights”, the priest sex scandal. They threw the Rosary brochures into a recycle bin as they left. The boys still held the Rosaries, though, when they passed us again later. Please pray for them? Messed-up thinking is being inculcated into younger and younger children. God have mercy!
  • A young immigrant family stopped, curious. The father was here for a job interview. The mother, who talked with evangelist Lucy, adheres to a religion with many gods and knew nothing about Christianity. Lucy gave her a Bible, with the Gospel of Mark bookmarked as the place to begin. The bookmark is our one-page presentation of the kerygma. Meanwhile, the father, “Shrat”, told evangelist Mike that he’d been a follower of Christ for years. Later, though, he claimed the same religion as his wife. So, he might think of Jesus as just another deity. Evangelist Mike set him up with a Catechism of the Catholic Church. Please pray they all become active disciples of Our Lord?
  • A couple visiting from eastern Europe approached us, wanting us to pray for peace. He was here to install accounting software and would be in the US for about 10 days. We joined hands and prayed for peace within the world and within the individual. Already Catholic, they appreciatively accepted Rosaries and its pamphlet. They are also trying to conceive, so please pray for them?
  • Because of a video-game event, many people wandered around with attention glued to their cell phone, oblivious to us. Please pray that these folks will each receive the gift to spend that much energy searching for Jesus!
  • Along with the opportunity for some in-depth conversations, we gave away 7-10 Rosaries, 4-5 Miraculous Medals, 1 Bible, 1 Catechism, and one copy of the Good News/kerygma pamphlet.
Please pray for us again today? Ask God to send people to us with hearts prepared to perceive their need for Our Savior and His Church? And ask that much good fruit for His Kingdom comes of today’s effort?

God hears your prayer and sends people to us! So thank you again for your prayers and other support for our apostolate. In turn, may God protect and greatly bless you and yours!

You must speak my words to them, whether they hear or resist (Ezekiel 2:7).

Our Lady vs the media? Grace at work, thanks to your ongoing prayers for the effectiveness of Boise’s Catholic street evangelization effort.
  • Fully half the business park was taken up by a “world con” for wizardry cartoon fans. At the side door of the convention center, 8-foot banners marked the registration entrance, and queue-defining ropes were in place. Near the main entrance, a truck broadcast, very loudly, the music tracks from the cartoon series represented. (Adding to the noise in the plaza was the fountain and the children playing in it.) However, the most striking feature of the display was a pair of giant inflatables of their featured monsters, one of them nearly three stories tall. The crowd heading into the convention contained many families with pre-teen children.
  • Several convention attendees were in costume, but only one of them stopped at our table. Her costume featured blue hair, and an orange jumpsuit with black spots. She explained that her character was from a cartoon that airs in France. Her character goes around saving French children from “feeling bad about themselves”. (Does that, though, also mean shielding them from any knowledge of personal sin and their need for repentance and forgiveness?) The woman accepted a Rosary and its pamphlet.
  • Despite the large number of people going past, because of my inability to make myself heard over the din – or perhaps the indifference of the crowd – I had several periods of no activity. So, I decided to finish praying the Memorare novena I began before heading downtown. After that, I started a second novena in thanksgiving.
  • Halfway through the 2nd, I noticed the smaller of the inflatable monsters had collapsed! By the end of the novena, the main monster had also been hurriedly taken down by convention staff, the wind had picked up, and the sky had darkened. (Notably, the wind hadn’t bothered a single paper on our table nor the children playing in the fountain.) Passing the side door again on my way out, I noticed the 8-foot banners were now lying on the ground, as well as some of the stands holding queue ropes. I credit the intercession of the BVM for that very localized windstorm that forced them to remove their “curb appeal”!
  • Was this divine disapproval for cartoons that encourage dependence on man and the denial of the need for Our Savior? Despite talking with relatively few people during the session, I gave away 7-10 Rosaries, and 1-2 maps of area parishes.
Please pray for us again today? I’m planning to set up downtown in just over an hour from now. Please ask God to send people to us prepared to perceive their need for Jesus Christ, His Church, and that much good fruit for His Kingdom comes of our effort today?

God is in control, and His will is good! So thank you again for your prayers and other support for our apostolate. In turn, may God protect and greatly bless you and yours!

Ears to hear … or not. Yet, Boise’s Catholic street evangelization effort continues, thanks to your prayers and other ongoing support!
  • A quiet, unobtrusive convention seemed to be centered in the east convention center. One man paused at our table on his way across the plaza to the west convention center. He’s an active Catholic from the other side of the country. But he accepted a Rosary from me, as well as a map of area parishes and the invitation to attend Mass that evening.
  • Later, another convention attendee from out of town stopped. Also identifying as Catholic, she did accept a Rosary, but declined the map and invitation to attend Mass because she “had a conference to attend.”
  • Evangelist Mike bravely hailed return visitor Walt as he made his way across the business park. Unfortunately, Walt was still focused on folks out to get him. We prayed with him for peace with the situation.
  • After Mike concluded the conversation with Walt, a few more people accepted Rosaries from us. Among our visitors was a couple, perhaps in their mid-30s. They wanted a Rosary for his mother. The man was Catholic, and talked briefly with evangelist Mike while Lucy talked with the woman. Besides the Rosaries, the woman also accepted a pocket-sized copy of the Gospel According to St. Luke.
  • A family with two young children stopped in answer to our offer of a free Rosary. The parents gave their kids permission, so they each chose a Rosary while the mother accepted the pamphlet explaining the devotion.
  • A number of people said they either had already received Rosaries from us or were already Catholic. We ask them to pray for us.
  • Although plenty of people were crossing the business park, relatively few of them stopped at our table. Noticeably, many of them either didn’t hear or see us, or pretended not to. May the Lord reach each of them for His Kingdom!
  • Altogether, the two evangelists gave away 5-7 Rosaries, 1 Gospel of St. Luke, and 1-2 maps of area parishes with Reconciliation and Sunday Mass times listed.
Please pray for us again today? As far as I know, only one evangelist will be available, since most of our other active team members have homes in an area where an active wildfire is blazing. May God protect them and their possessions! I plan to head downtown again in just an hour or so from now. Please ask God to send people to us, with their eyes, ears, and heart open and able to perceive their need for Our Savior Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church. Please ask God to grant that much good fruit for His Kingdom be borne from today’s efforts.

Ignoring us is still a reaction to the Gospel. Perhaps the more uncomfortable it makes a person, the more they are recognizing their need for repentance and for Our Savior. So, thank you again so much for your prayers and support! With your help, we remain visible. With God’s answer to your prayers, the lost are being found. So thank you! In turn, may God protect and greatly bless you and yours!

Feeling safe, by the grace of God – and thanks to your ongoing prayers for Boise’s Catholic street evangelization effort. I can’t thank you enough!
  • Last week’s session was dominated again by repeat visitor “Walt”. This time, he decided to tell of an incident from when he was 11 years old. In detail. Now, the man perceives himself as nonviolent, but outside observers might think he is experiencing barely controlled anger: his narration accompanied by flying spittle and table pounding, with the occasional tear of self-pity.
  • Indeed, Walt’s story-telling mode, shall we say, was so dramatic that, several times, “Good Samaritans” stopped at my table in hopes of getting him to move on. However, Walt just waited quietly until each had left and then picked up his story where and how he’d left off. (And really, under the unbecoming exterior, he really is an admirable human being!) Finally, nearly a half hour after closing time, having heard the one story, I just packed everything up and said, “see ya later”. He then turned and calmly continued on his way.
  • Meanwhile, the first group of “Good Samaritans” to interrupt were three non-Christians. They seemed only vaguely interested in Christianity. However, the woman selected a Rosary; one man chose the Good News/kerygma pamphlet; and the other man accepted the brochure on how to pray the Rosary. May God bless them!
  • Somewhat later, two “Good Samaritan” men arrived. They were young and athletic, clean-cut, and built like football players. Although not really interested, one of the men let me explain the Rosary to him, just to give me a break from Walt. Then, as I turned to the woman who had arrived about the same time behind me, the two men tried to talk Walt into moving on. They were unsuccessful, but may God bless them for their protective instincts!
  • Meanwhile, the sixth and last “Good Samaritan” was the woman, with her bicycle. She wanted prayer for her flat tire. (Lord, please help her see Your loving hand in everything, even this!) I also prayed she get it repaired easily enough and that the rest of her day turn out well.
  • So, odd session that it was, the one evangelist still gave away 4-5 Rosaries and its pamphlet, as well as 1 Good News/kerygma pamphlet.
Please pray for us again today? I plan to head downtown in just a couple of hours from now. Please ask God to send people to us with hearts prepared to perceive their need for Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. Please ask God to grant that much good fruit for His Kingdom comes of today’s efforts.

Though he looked threatening, I experienced no fear (fatigue from listening, yes, but not fear). So thank you again for your prayers and other support for the apostolate! In turn, may God protect and greatly bless you and yours!

Stump the evangelist? A big thank you to Fr. Tom, Barbara, Michael, and to each of you who prays for Boise’s Catholic street evangelization effort. We rely on God’s answers to your prayers!
  • A pre-teen from a neighboring town walked up, wanting to “stump the evangelist”. He confronted me with, “What are the four marks of…” “One, holy, Catholic, apostolic,” I interrupted. “That’s right!” our evangelist-in-training said. I offered him one of our mission-style Rosaries. “Oh, I have dozens of these at home already. What I really want is one with the metal links.” Oooh, tough one. I had run out of those a week or so ago. But I dug through the bag anyway. And there, all the way on the bottom, tucked away under a fold, was a lone “chain Rosary” with blue beads. When I offered it to him, his eyes lit up. “That’s exactly what I wanted!” I told him his guardian angel must have saved it for him. He also accepted a Miraculous Medal and encouragement to keep studying apologetics. Please pray for him?
  • A man and woman walked by. I offered free Rosaries. She shook her head no, but he paused. “Yes, I’d like some prayer beads,” he said and came back to look at them. Guessing from his popular-art tattoos, I figured he was an every-religion-is-the-same kind of guy. But, after he had asked for and received a Divine Mercy prayer card, he dropped the pointed remark, “I’ll just take this home and use it as a bookmark in my Bible.” So, I explained that the Rosary is a series of meditations on the life of Christ and that our brochure shows where each Mystery can be found in the Bible. At that, he was suddenly interested. He not only accepted a Rosary, but fitted its pamphlet and the Divine Mercy card into his phone case, praising God all the time. Go figure.
  • Foot traffic was lighter than it has been, possibly due to triple-digit temperatures. Still, the evangelist ended up giving away 10-12 Rosaries, 1 Miraculous Medal, and 1 Divine Mercy prayer card.
Please pray for us again today? I plan to set up downtown in just a couple of hours from now. Please ask God to send people to us, prepared to perceive their need for Our Savior Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. Young people still catch the “evangelization bug”, hoping to get others to know the Truth contained in the Catholic Faith. Praise and glory be to God! And thank you again for all of your prayers and other support that makes this apostolate possible. In turn, may God protect and greatly bless you and yours!

An answered prayer. So thank you to @Katie777, Sheila, and all of you for your ongoing prayers and other support for Boise’s Catholic street evangelization effort.
  • An older couple on bicycles stopped by. Occasional visitor, they also seem to be perhaps mentally and housing challenged. They engaged briefly in conversation with Evangelist Mike. The man, also named “Mike”, is 74 years old. He had been hit by a car and showed us all his bruises (removing perhaps too much clothing to do so). He has a lawyer, he said, and so we prayed that he would get a just settlement. The couple also told us that one of our frequent visitors, “Walt”, has gotten a temporary job! Thank you, God!!! Please pray that Walt’s ability to work continues and that God lets him get back on his feet?
  • A family, with their cat (!) on a leash, had been sitting at the picnic table behind us. The parents declined our offer of a free Rosary. As they were leaving, though, the two girls (perhaps 8 and 6 years old) wanted Rosaries. Their parents gave permission. The youngest generously offered a dollar out of her little purse before she even looked at the Rosaries. But we don’t accept donations on the street, so she gladly selected one in her favorite colors. Both girls also accepted a copy of the Rosary pamphlet.
  • Young parents passed us, pushing a stroller with the dog in it while the baby was being carried by the mother. The father wanted a Rosary but didn’t want to talk. So Evangelist Mike handed him one and its pamphlet, which he accepted.
  • I’ve probably told you that I have developed “face blindness” in recent years, that is, people literally all look alike and it takes me a very long time to recognize them because I have to learn how they move or talk. But God isn’t face blind. Do you remember the two nouveau-atheist high school boys from a few weeks back? They had both gotten haircuts (for back to school?) and were dressed nicely. However, for some reason (a tip from my guardian angel?), I recognized them although Evangelist Mike did not. I must have had “the look” on my face, though, because though they had been heading toward us, they changed course and moved along without stopping. I overheard the more argumentative one say, “See? I said she’d remember us!” So, perhaps God lets us answer legitimate questions and doubts, but draws the line at letting us be simply playthings for the frivolous.
  • Lots of people were out, again participating in a video game event. But, especially with the noticeably cooler weather that day, they were mostly all in a good mood. Altogether, the two evangelists gave away 12-15 Rosaries and its booklet, as well as one Miraculous Medal.
Please pray for us again today? I plan to set up downtown in just a little while. Please ask God to send people to us prepared to perceive their need for Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. Please ask God to grant much good fruit for His Kingdom from our efforts today?

God answers your prayers! So thank you again! In turn, may God protect and greatly bless you and yours!
