He sounds angry, hurt, and betrayed. These sentiments don’t settle into bitterness unless one harbors them and practices resentment and unforgiveness. It is not reasonable to expect the man not to get his feelings hurt, or be angry when he has been unjustly (according to his report) accused.

Many of us would have preferred he dealt with his feelings differently, but we do the best we can with what we have.
Who is “us” and “we” ? Are you speaking for a specific group?
One of the things I struggle with is the idea that some feel like this man needs to be defended from this firestorm that he brought on himself.
For me, the whole thing is just surreal. Twitter, facebook, fans, websites… This isnt the first time the Church has had to deal with a, shall we say, eccentric priest but it is the first time the Church has to deal with an internal matter on “twitter”. I think Father has a beef with the politics of the “system” and he may or may not have a point BUT he gets no sympathy from me for the negative publicity he recieves from some of his critics.
Father may “feel” like God is calling him to more than he has already done but it is interesting how he throws the whole system away. Obedience is something that is always easy when one is satified and feels justly treated. Its when one feels slighted or persecuted that one’s true character comes out.
Bottom line is that we are being exposed to information and events that we as laypeople should never be exposed to and now the court of public opinion is in play in Church matters.
And as Ive said before I just hope we dont see Fr Corapi “blacksheepdog” in captions underneath his picture on CNN as he is leading an agenda against the Church and gettting credibility as a “Catholic” priest. im not saying that is what he is doing but there are some out there who lead thier agenda and try to battle the Church in public while still claiming to have the credibility that the word “catholic” carries with it. You know the type, books, CNN, etc… they seem to come out of the woodwork during a Papal election.

You seem to know everything. Even how and why Father Corapi may or may not feel in a certain way. How is that?

I had the same reaction. In fact, after sitting on it for a week, I find I am angry about the title of this thread, because it is misleading. I don’t know who chooses the headlines for the “news bot” but whoever made up this one only did more to contribute to confusion and upset. It is amazing how much damage can be done by an erroneous headline.
I do not see how you can take the question posed and twist it to present your rationalized explanation regarding the change or clarification regarding Father Corapi’s desire to leave the priesthood. I do not know that it is not at all the case that Father Corapi did mean to leave the priesthood then realized it would be best for his purposes to not be laicitized and request to be released from priestly duties; and being able to do this exactly because of the chaos and confusion caused with the laity’s ignorance regarding the distinction of how a priest is always a priest and the loss of priestly faculties. This distinction created confusion with the laity and it could be the case that it gave Father Corapi enough time to be exposed to the reaction of the laity and note that it would be best if he request to be released from priestly duties versus being defrocked. I do not know if this is the case and so I am not presenting it as factual but neither do I know if your explanation is the case. Now, all the media is wrong too? Everyone is wrong except Father Corapi? Does the truth is still matter?

I can smell Satan in this chaos and confusion. I know one thing about all this though, Our Lord Jesus will bring something good out of it all.

Mugshot of a “Matthew Bryan Sprinkle”

Father Corapi said: “The name “The Black Sheep Dog” is the title of my autobiography, a title which I came up with about a year and a half ago. That title was, by the way, stolen by a person who worked for me while they were working for me, attempting to secure internet domain names under that title.”

Up until a few days ago, theblacksheepdog.com used to take one to online catholic network (which is owned and operated by Tamra Sexton). Now it shows up for auction.
It was registered by “Matt Sprinkle” of Whitefish, MT in Feb 2010.

the mugshot is certainly not becoming to him. i will be happy when the pieces begin to fall into place and we get a whole picture of exactly what did happen and what is happening and what will happen in the future regarding this whole incident.

I don’t claim that Fr. Corapi is doing otherwise, but I do think that it’s been *imprudent *to share so many details of the situation with the “fan base” and the public in general. There is to many of us the appearance of a spirit of disobedience to, or at least disdain for, Church authority. Much of this confusion and speculation could have been avoided, and I do believe a scandal has resulted where there *needn’t *necessarily be one. 😦
I agree.

People that have been following the news. I have been reading the blogs and responses to his press releases.

It seems to me like he really does need to be defended from himself. He said and did some things that might have been better left unsaid and undone. People sometimes do stuff like that when they are hurt and angry. May God send people to defend me against the firestorms I create for myself!

Exactly. You put yourself out there, in whatever manner, and you become a target.
Father may “feel” like God is calling him to more than he has already done but it is interesting how he throws the whole system away.
I am sorry, but I just don’t know where you get that. I just listened to the youtube recording again and he is not saying that.

Right.

That is what I meant when I referred to things that might better have been left unsaid.
It is not a “Church matter”, though. It may seem that way because he is a priest, but it is really no different than any other allegation that is made by a disgruntled employee against a former employer. If he were not a priest, we would not be discussing it on CAF.

He has expressely stated that he is taking this course so that he WILL NOT have an ADVERSARIAL relationship with the Church. I don’t know how much more clear he can make it.

Eeeeem! So she has tried to sell Father Corapi’s rosary on ebay from 5 grand upwards, and now for sale is blachsheepdog.com domain for a mere 10 grand…
what do we make of that?

He wants to be a priest, but he can’t serve under the current circumstances, under his present authorative structure. He has been “released from public priestly duties” since Ash Wed. when he was placed on Administrative Leave. This happened against his will, and according to his statement, against the wishes of his superiors in the order as well. He maintains that they were coerced into suspending him by the Bishop, who wanted him relieved of duty.

I think what he is accepting is that he must either sumbit to an investigative process he believes is inherintly unjust, or remain in this state of having no faculties indefinitely.
You seem to know that Father Corapi is innocent and Bishop Mulvey is guilty as charged by Father Corapi. How do you know that and if you don’t perhaps you should re-read your posts.

Is it that Canon Law should be thrown away like yesterday’s garbage? I don’t think so.

I have no reason to believe that Bishop Mulvey acted irresponsibly and is an evil Bishop. I do not know the pile of file that awaited him when he became Bishop of Corpus Christi a year ago. I** have read that in order for a priest to be suspended he must have already received a warning about sexual abuse as per Canon Law**. I do not know what is in Bishop Mulvey’s office or what was awaiting him and what he needed to evaluate given the fame of Father Corapi. I simply do not know, as Father Groeschel may put it; I wasn’t there. Were you there?

Is it that the accused perceives that he would be defrocked or permanently suspended and is finding the best way out? I do not know and to pretend to know the answers to this question based on the public information is improper.

I Will Not Defend Fr. Corapi. I Will Defend Bishop Mulvey.

Here is a very quick summation about the Fr. Corapi affair:

-Fr. Corapi was suspended by order of Bishop Mulvey, of Corpus Christi, because of allegations by a former employee of his apostolate. We do not know if the allegations are true.
-Fr. Corapi has been suspended all of 4 months when he announced he is leaving the priesthood and his order so that he can continue his ministry. In doing so, he threw the following under the bus:
  1. The Catholic Church’s investigative process.
  2. His accuser.
  3. Bishop Mulvey.
As to #1 - I am not a fan of certain parts of the process, and because it isn’t a perfect process, I believe some criticisms are very valid. That does NOT mean that Corapi is being unjustly treated - we just don’t know enough to make support the claims one way or the other.

As to #2 - we don’t know enough, so no comment.

As to #3 - I know Bishop Mulvey and can say this. He does not deserve the treatment he is getting from Corapi. You see, Bishop Mulvey is the kind of man who will not come out with both guns blazing in order to defend himself. In other words, he isn’t like me. He is a humble servant of God and a very good priest and Bishop.

He didn’t go looking for a fight with Corapi, but was dragged into it because of an accusation that was brought to his attention. What was he to do? He had to launch an investigation and the most prudent thing was to pull Corapi from active ministry until the investigation could go forward.

We still don’t know if the accusations against Corapi are true or not and we may never know. But, here is what we do know:
  1. The legal processes, both in the courts and the Church, are flawed.
  2. Fr. Corapi needs our prayers.
  3. Bishop Mulvey needs our prayers.
  4. The accuser needs our prayers.
  5. The Church needs our prayers.
  6. Fr. Corapi was asked to stop living by himself, on a ranch in Montana, and join his congregation.
  7. Fr. Corapi was a priest of the Diocese of Corpus Christi and took a vow of obedience to his superiors. This vow has been broken.
  8. This scandal is dealt with by Canon Law, not the Dallas Charter for the protection of children.
  9. Because Corapi is walking away from the priesthood, the Church’s investigation is over. The legal courts will now deal with it alone.
  10. God is a Provident Father and can bring good out of any situation.
If Corapi “quit” because of an unjust situation, then he probably still made the wrong decision. It seems the decision to re-brand himself outside of the priesthood must have been made a while ago. Which means he only gave the process a few short months, at best. What would we think of St. Padre Pio if he quit in the face of injustice? What about Jesus quitting his vocation in the face of injustice?

I have read everything posted in the links, and listened to his announcements. I can’t find anything anywhere that indicates he has any “desire to leave the priesthood”. On the contrary, I get the impression of a person who finds himself in a position where he is no longer permitted to function in that capacity struggling to accept the bad news.
Father Corapi did mean to leave the priesthood…
Maybe you can help me understand where you get this impression. To me it seems as though he was relieved of his faculties against his will, and against the will of his order. Maybe this is not consistent with the facts? Maybe you can give me some links I have not researched?

What makes you say that?!

I do presume Corapi’s innocence, but he is the one supporting the right of his Bishop to suspend him - he also says there is no chance that he would ever have his faculties reinstated so that he can function as a priest in the Catholic Church. He supports the jurisdiction of the bishop to make this happen. How does this make his Bishop “guilty”?
Is it that Canon Law should be thrown away like yesterday’s garbage? I don’t think so.
It is Corapi saying that he feels like he was thrown away like yesterday’s garbage. Why can’t the process function so that no one, the alleged victim, the alleged perpetrator, and the authorities all be valued as persons, and no one gets “thrown away like yesterday’s garbage”???
I have no reason to believe that Bishop Mulvey acted irresponsibly and is an evil Bishop.
I don’t either.
I do not know the pile of file that awaited him when he became Bishop of Corpus Christi a year ago.
Corapi noted how much pressure he is under from various sources that put him in a difficult position, which he can appreciate, even if he does not appreciate the action that was taken in his own case. He has always enjoyned the faithful to pray for, support, and obey the Bishops. In accepting his status as suspended (permanently) he is exercising obedience to his bishop.
I** have read that in order for a priest to be suspended he must have already received a warning about sexual abuse as per Canon Law**. I do not know what is in Bishop Mulvey’s office or what was awaiting him and what he needed to evaluate given the fame of Father Corapi. I got the distinct impression that the canon laws were not followed in this case. Maybe that is not accurate, either. It occurs to me that there may have been dozens of allegations over the years. He talks about one woman accusing him of rape some years back, so this is not the first time an allegation was made. When police interviewed the complainant, she was clear that he had come out of her TV screen and raped her. Who knows how many kookie complaints the Bishop has had to deal with over the years! Maybe he just wants Corapi to go work under some other Bishop who has time to deal with such things?
Is it that the accused perceives that he would be defrocked or permanently suspended and is finding the best way out?
Yes, I think he was very clear about that.
I do not know and to pretend to know the answers to this question based on the public information is improper.
I think we can take what he said at face value.
I Will Not Defend Fr. Corapi. I Will Defend Bishop Mulvey.
Why do either need to be seen in an adversarial light? ARe not both taking the actions that they prayerfully believe are right for them to do? Why do either need to be "attacked " for it so that they need defense?

I guess I am at a loss to understand how any of these are “thrown under the bus”. He has accepted that the investigative process will not result in reinstatement of his faculties, he has allowed the allegations of the accuser stand, and he has obeyed his bishop by accepting his status. 🤷
… it isn’t a perfect process, I believe some criticisms are very valid. That does NOT mean that Corapi is being unjustly treated - we just don’t know enough to make support the claims one way or the other.
He took the advice of his civil and canon lawyers on the matter. We will probably never know the details.
As to #2 - we don’t know enough, so no comment.
So, how do you know enough to determine he has “thrown her under the bus”? As it stands now, her allegations will permanently prevent him from ministering as a priest. It seems like she got at least part of what she wanted (though the financial settlement may be more important, especially given the news about selling of his rosary and the website).
As to #3 - I know Bishop Mulvey and can say this. He does not deserve the treatment he is getting from Corapi. I do not know him, but I will take your word for it. I am sure any Bishop that had Corapi in his diocese must be a very patient and longsuffering man. I imagine that Corapi foments a never ending list of complaints from people. I never listened to his youtube clips till this week, but I am mindful that his expressions must engender a great deal of hostility among other bishops, politicians, and people in power, like the administrators of Notre Dame.

Yes.

When I heard about it happening on Ash Wednesday I was very disappointed, because I enjoy his Lenten retreats. Then I realized that maybe the Lord had a different kind of lenten retreat planned for him, and that he needed to spend some time in quiet prayer and reflection. I thought it was an unexpected gift. He needed some time of to rest and regroup.

I guess I can’t see how this is the case. They appear to have rescinded a previous dispensation they made for him to live away from the community. Because of that, he may no longer be able to remain a member of that community. I think if he did, he would have to, in obedience, move back. I get the impression that he does not feel he will be able to do what God has called him to do if he remains there.

No, I don’t think this is accurate. Nothing has changed about his status. He has been suspended since Ash Wed. He did not walk away from public ministry as a priest. He was relieved of it against his will.

The investigation was stymied because he refused to allow defamation. In order for it to proceed, he would have to release the accuser from her non-disclosure agreement. This would be the case even if he sold the house and moved back in with the order and remained a suspended priest at the community.
If Corapi “quit” because of an unjust situation, then he probably still made the wrong decision.
I am puzzled by expressions like this. I don’t see how he “quit” anything. His faculties were suspended, and he has decided not to pursue an adversarial relationship with the Church to try to get them reinstated. He has been advised that, if he submits to the process, they will not be restored. How is that “quitting”?
It seems the decision to re-brand himself outside of the priesthood must have been made a while ago. Which means he only gave the process a few short months, at best.
I think he has seen this coming for years. He has told stories about how it has happened to other priests, and he has been so flagrantly outspoken about certain issues that he made himself a target.
What would we think of St. Padre Pio if he quit in the face of injustice? What about Jesus quitting his vocation in the face of injustice?
I think Padre Pio would go into silent retreat, and probably stay there indefinitely if he was not restored his faculties.

Obviously, Corapi does not believe this is the right course of action for himself. He calls that “lie down and die”, and says he is not ready for that.

**Well, that is literally what Our Lord Jesus did, he died for us. He did not quit his mission nor resigned from his priesthood. Praise be to God! **And, that is exactly what Paul did. Now, that I type Paul’s name, I cringe at the thought that people have claimed that Father Corapi is a prophet like Paul. To carry on, and that is exactly what Peter did. I don’t see how Father Corapi is justified in comparing himself with Moses and capitalizing "I AM " oh, sure, sure, it was just to emphasize it, but, he is an educated priest and knows what that would recall to those of us familiar with Sacred Scripture, yet, he still capitalized it.

As I said, you have an answer for all the thinking that is not blindly following Father Corapi. As for me, I try to discern keeping in mind the Creed, the teaching of Holy Mother Church and in this situation additionally the fact that Bishop Mulvey is the authority in this matter and I trust he has made a correct decision. I am just waiting for his final decision regarding this matter.

What is wrong with this:🙂

If the allegations against Father Corapi are true, in whole or in part, then it is best for all concerned—including the Church as a whole—that he be laicized. The behavior he is alleged to have engaged in is consistent with Father Corapi’s own account of his life before his mother, with the perseverance of Saint Monica, prayed him back into the Church. If he has relapsed into the self-destructive behavior that once left him penniless, homeless, drug-addicted, and near death, he will never be able to function as a priest again without causing scandal.

If, on the other hand, the allegations against Father Corapi are completely untrue, then the action that he took on “both Trinity Sunday on the Catholic liturgical calendar and Fathers’ Day on the secular calendar” is, in some ways, even worse than what he was alleged to have done. Drug abuse could destroy his health and affect the people around him; having (presumably consensual) sexual relations with several women would be a violation of his vows and affect his spiritual life and theirs.

But in leaving the priesthood (and, in so doing, bringing the investigation into the allegations against him to a crashing halt), Father Corapi is breaking the most important promise he has ever made, the vows that he took at his ordination. And by doing so publicly, and by publicly damning the ecclesiastical authorities that even he acknowledges have “the right to govern” as they see fit, he not only places his own soul in danger but encourages distrust, anger, and even hatred of Church authorities in his many followers, putting their souls at risk as well.catholicism.about.com/b/2011/06/21/a-priest-forever-the-strange-case-of-fr-john-corapi.htm

Did anyone else pick up on his youtube post that he is now going to be commenting on not just religious matters but other matters aswell. What do you think that will be? Baseball? Economics? Any ideas
In general, what’s wrong with the world. 😉
In the US clergy are not allowed to speak out on politics, so he could now be free to talk about the intersection of morality and politics.
A few things come to mind: the upcoming presidential election, homosexual marriage, socialist policies of the government, abortion, morality of military action here and there…

Mother’s inside problem was taken to Rome and it’s said in the end Pope JPII sided with her. I heard this story through Fr. Bill Casey from the Fathers of Mercy tapes. I think it’s safe to say there are things going on inside the Church that us lay people really don’t know about. I would say the same in Fr. Corapi’s case.

Indeed.

O Jesus, Eternal Priest;
keep all Your priests within the shelter of Your
Sacred Heart, where none may harm them.
Keep unstained their anointed hands
which daily touch Your Sacred Body.

Keep unsullied their lips purpled with Your Precious Blood.
Keep pure and unearthly their hearts sealed with the
sublime marks of Your glorious priesthood.
Let Your holy love surround them and shield them
from the world’s contagion.

Bless their labors with abundant fruit,
and may the souls to whom they have ministered to
be their joy and consolation
and in Heaven their beautiful and everlasting crown.

O Mary, Queen of the clergy, pray for us;
obtain for us many holy priests.

Amen.

Who do you guys ultimately think is responsible for all this confusion going on?
Stay strong in Christ. God Bless.

If you read his clarifications. It seems, this is a man who has succumbed to his pride!
  • For, that of the true proverb has happened to them: The dog is returned to his vomit: and, The sow that was washed, to her wallowing in the mire. *
Rather than, accepting that he may have to sacrifice. He may have to perish, and wait for God to vindicate him, he decided to not turn the other cheek, with a worldly approach. The domain name etc.

Warning signs I read here:
Some of you have thought I might have acted too fast and not given the Church enough time to complete their investigation. You could be right*, but you also don’t know the facts like I do. The utter disregard for our reasonable requests and certain statements made by the lawyer for the Society of Our Lady confirmed to us that they would not complete the investigation **so long as I insisted in exercising my civil and human rights. **That is a dead horse. Why beat it? My lawyers would not allow me to continue unless ten questions were answered regarding the nature of the process—simple reasonable questions. They ignored the request for 6 weeks and still ignore it. These weren’t rocket science questions. At a future time we’ll publish the entire letter and the questions.
He mentions too much of his WORLDLY past, and talents, copyright issues…he’s taking too much of a worldly approach!

He’s lost humility.
For about ten years I have been attacked, threatened, and endured extortion attempts. The leadership of the Church never lifted a finger to help me in any way with this. Every time someone gets angry with me or decides they want a payday I have to go through hell with no help from the leadership of the Church. I admit I have grown weary of that. The trauma created by all of the sexual abuse of minors scandals has warped the judgment of some in authority. They are running scared. I believe in my case they panicked. “We don’t know if the dog is rabid, but let’s shoot him in the head just in case.” Well, this black sheep of a sheepdog has been “shot in the head” before and lived to tell about it. I’ll be telling about it for awhile longer.
The name “The Black Sheep Dog” is the title of my autobiography, a title which I came up with about a year and a half ago. That title was, by the way, stolen by a person who worked for me while they were working for me, attempting to secure internet domain names under that title. That is in effect a violation of federal intellectual property laws since I have both registered trademarks and copyright on that title.** The title is simply the combination of a black sheep, that would be me; and a sheepdog, that would also be me. **
Too many references to himself. And how he has been wronged by the leadership. Rather than a humble rebuke of the leadership.

Too much justifications, too much rationalizations…And all while scandalizing his supporters.
Listen my friends, I realize this situation is less than ideal. I don’t like it either, but under the circumstances I honestly believed and still do that I had one of two choices to make:
  1. Crawl under a rock and quietly die; or
  1. Don’t crawl under the rock and don’t die. I feel that I still have something to offer.
The leadership of the Church has made it clear to me they don’t want me anymore. They have a right to do that and I have to accept that. So, I’ll do what I can outside of the Church. I’m not leaving the Church. I am simply doing something else in life so that I won’t wither up and die, and so that you can still derive some benefit from my gifts from God. It may not be as good as before, or it may be better. The only thing I know for sure is that I’m not going to disobey the Church and attempt to “minister” as a priest, and I’m not going to lay down and die. I’m not ready to do that just yet. As a matter of fact, you might be pleasantly surprised at what’s in our future. Stay in touch.
Pray to Mother Mary, and the Saints.

He still has a chance to cooperate with God’s graces. He is thinking too much about what he MIGHT LOSE. His public ministry, his ability to be a speaker. Holding that as some sort of idol, he is not willing to sacrifice.
Wouldn’t his past twenty years of public service be enough for him? Why can’t he be more obedient? A lot of contradiction in that post … lots of contradiction. ( This is spiritual warfare! ) He is not leaving the church but hopes to continue outside? And then he leaves his followers, with promotional teases at the end?

"It might not be good as before. It might be" How can you do that when you’re rebelling against the mystical body. Without me, you can do nothing. Jesus says.

Even if the bishops are bad. Respect the office. It is a chastisement… follow. St. Francis of Assisi’s example.

Fr. Corapi is suffering right now from this:
My kingdom, come. My will be done.
The unholy trinity of Me, Myself, and I
… Blind!

I this, I that, too many I’s, too many me’s…not enough mentions of CHRIST…too many justifications…too much "I’ve been done wrong!! "
The Devil will allow us to conquer any vice, if we maintain the ugliest one: Pride.*

St. Augustine says,
every other kind of inequity prompts the evil deeds , but pride lurks even in the doing of good deeds to their undoing…
Pride undoes good actions.

Pray for Fr. Corapi, to be given grace for humility. He will need to be more contrite over his public actions and his display that are going to continue to scandalize the people who have heard his past sermons.

Who do you guys ultimately think is responsible for all this confusion going on?
Stay strong in Christ. God Bless.
The devil. MAY CHRIST REBUKE HIM.

The dia*boline. Greek word for, to REND ASUNDER…lots of torn emotions is resulting from the actions of both sides. Bishops accusing others, priests accusing bishops.

Pray to St. Michael the Archangel, and pray his prayer. Pray for all our priests and bishops!

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen. *
