Weird, I get it all the time from serving staff. And it’s on most forms.
I usually ignore it on forms because I find it stupid, to be honest.

But I never get asked about my title. Truthfully. And never by a server in a restaurant.
On forms if I ignore it they fill it in as miss. It’s weird.

Cool; I have no clue what it’s like to inhabit your body. Every body, every experience is different.

Exactly. Ten characters.
So their experience of womanhood is as different to mine as yours is to mine.
It’s not “womanhood” in my definition. You won’t convince me it is.

They have a valid experience but it is not womanhood. I will always disagree with that definition.

The thread is derailing, so that’s my last observation on that subject.

Why? They’re women. Being women is more than just genitals.

So, you know medication treats a physical problem, right? It corrects the body producing the wrong or not enough chemicals. So you thwarted your own post.

my identity as a person for whom English isn’t a first language
“I identify as ESL” . . .

Hmm, that’s thinking small. I think that I shall identify as a billionaire, and berate banks that don’t hand me millions . . .
I think most companies remain traditional but will go along with this transgender nonsense because they’re afraid of being sued or labelled as bigoted.
The president of twitter apologized under heavy fire this week for eating at Chick-Fil-A . . .
They/them is usually accepted by gender nonconforming folks.
Insensitive to those with multiple personality disorder. Also mocks those who self-identity as grammaticians . . .
If I say “he” that means it will also be “his, him”.
he-her-it is no less logical than the basic premises . . .
This hasn’t always been true, mainly because the English language doesn’t have a singular pronoun for an unknown gender.
That is simply incorrect.

Digressing . . .I took an upper division class on Set Theory as an undergraduate. The professor was this odd little man, whose beard, hair, and yiddish accent marked him as an Orthodox Jew. I had a bit of trepidation when I read the intro to the book which acknowledged him . . .

Anyway, midway through the class introduction, he stopped and started asking about grammar. Then, to paraphrase (but reasonable accurately, although without the accent) “some languages have pronouns for persons of unknown gender. English is one of those languages. The word for a person of unknown gender is ‘he’. So forgive me if I do not say ‘he or she’.”–and he then resumed the introduction mid-sentence.

Years later, in a a graduate math class at Iowa States (Stochastic [random variable] Calculus), I mentioned something in passing about the class from him and the room came to a halt, the professor included.

It seems that Paul Halmos was easily one of the top ten mathematicians of the 20th century . . . (I would also come to unwittingly take other classes there from other professors of his/Einstein’s level, but that’s for another day).

Anyway, plural pronouns have been used by illiterates for quite some time, but the claim that such is proper grammar is quite recent.

I assume you mean dissociative personality disorder. And grammatarians know that English had used it has a singular pronoun fur centuries.

My new persona is velociraptor. I demand to be addressed as such. Or Velo, for short. “Raptor” is insensitive and degrading, since mere birds can be “raptors.”
I totally support this.

Hey! I tried to redirect the thread a couple of times and was told discussion of transgenders was relevant. We didn’t derail it.

Yup. And I tried to keep it there.

Dismissing transpeople won’t make them go away. Disparaging people who live with GID doesn’t make your case for you.

You might want to learn something about GID from someone who lives with it, like you would learn about Catholicism from someone who lives it. Don’t swallow anti-trans rhetoric, it just makes one look ignorant or lacking empathy. It get that it’s tough to navigate especially if you have been immersed in a anti trans/anti-LGBT culture. I have the benefit of knowing a few transpeople, different genders, different ages, different journeys. I’m going to listen to them before some ranty person on the internet who suggests that I’m mentally ill for understanding them to some small degree.

No worries. But the recommended therapy for many is to transition; it relieved dysphoria. And there is every chance their problem is the body, not the mind.

Think of it like this; some folks have phantom limb syndrome. A misorder of the mind but if we could restore that missing limb it would be the best way to treat the disorder.

Therapy for GID doesn’t stop the dysphoria. There’s no medication for it and “conversion” therapy can be deadly. So we treat the body, something we can treat.
