Three marriages. They will be laughing at our president around the world, as they did at the Italian president until his recent resignation.

I hold no brief for Obama, though I was proud that America had reached the place where a biracial person could occupy the White House. What a surprise to me personally. But he seems to have no personal scandal. Critics have tried to say he was born in Kenya, is a secret Muslim, doesn't hold his hand over his heart during the pledge, doesn't wear a flag pin - etc. - none of them true.

Obama has been disappointing to those of us who hoped that he could turn things around once he inherited such a mess. It hasn't happened. This was a major opportunity for the GOP to regain the White House. Sadly, Gingrich is unlikely to do that. He will be characterized as a typical politician who sold his soul for money as a lobbyist. And for millions of voters his personal life will be alienating.

Surely, we can do better than Gingrich. Such a tragedy that he should rise to the top because there is such a drive not to go with Mitt. Yes, I have some problems with Mitt, too, but not nearly as many as with Newt. His morality seems intact,

It might also raise questions concerning the current Catholic marriage annulment process.

Why? What is it about Gingrich’s annulments that are suspect? Do you have some inside knowledge?
Yes. In 1929, the USA tribunals gave out about ten or so marriage annulments in the whole USA. Whereas presently it has been as high as 60,000 marriage annulments per year in the USA. That is quite an explosion in the number of marriage annulments.

So, it has nothing to do with Newt Gingrich’s annulments. …unless, you think he had 60,000 annulments. 😛

I doubt it. You obviously have a problem with the annulment process, but I don’t think that Gingrich’s situation would raise any further questions. They would have been raised already.

Interestingly, those who complain about Obama’s being part of the intellectual elite should take a look at Romney with his Harvard degrees, not to mention his multi-millionaire status. I believe he’s smart and, as you say, morally intact. However, I wonder where he really stands on the issues. It seems to me he’s playing it a little too safe in the debates and, as most of us political junkies know, he has flip-flopped quite a bit throughout the years. With all of Gingrich’s moral baggage, I would prefer him as the GOP nominee: he’s intelligent, highly experienced, speaks his mind, and can think outside of the box. He would be a formidable contender against Obama, while Romney, even though he may look presidential, lacks charisma, which would be an important factor in the debates with Obama and, for some, in deciding whether to vote for him. Also, let’s not kid ourselves, Romney’s religion will affect some conservative votes. It is a sad fact of life that some of our most effective Presidents, such as Johnson and Clinton, have not exactly been moral paragons in their personal or political lives, whereas others, such as Carter and George W. Bush, seemingly nice guys, had no business being President.

I saw someone on CAF who raised the question already.

If you think Romney has flip flopped then here’s an article on The Many Egregious Flip-flops of Newt Gingrich:

Who cares what country laughs at us? America is always laughed at and criticized by European countries - mostly when we get make a big deal at our presidents’ sex scandals - such as Clinton’s.

How many marriages should a candidate be able to have? Only one? Two? Three? Please tell us your standard and how you arrive at it.

So he can fight to keep the slaughter of the unborn legal, but that’s ok because what counts is that he has “no personal scandal” ?

What made you think the most leftist senator in the senate would “turn things around” ? What made you think he’d do anything but try to move the country to the left?
Surely, we can do better than Gingrich.
Mabye so, but quit calling me shirley. (sorry, I couldn’t resist)

Last I checked, Mitt had his own problems with flip flopping - more serious flip flops than what you accuse Newt of doing. I do note that you haven’t given any examples of Newt’s “flip flopping” nor have you explained why you call him a “pseudo historian”. You also haven’t anwered the question of who would you want choosing the next supreme court justices, Newt or Obama? That makes me think there is something else going on here than a straight forward criticism and political analysis.

I don’t think you’d catch Romney scoffing at Americans who “cling to their guns and religion” like Obama did. Obama’s elitism is a particularly liberal left version. Having heard Romney in most of the debates I am struck by how well he does. I think he’d do fine against Obama. Also, I would question your assertion that Johnson was an effective president, unless by effective you mean he was able to get his agenda passed through congress. If you think his policies were effective, then I think you’d have a pretty big debate on your hands. I would consider Bush 1 as having a high moral character. I would like our presidentn to have a high moral character and be an effective leader as well. Is that asking too much? Perhaps Romney is the best choice for that this election.

The incumbent is going to receive a good percent of votes. The worst case senerio is splitting the Republican ticket which historically has happened.

Pretty much why I remain open minded about the candidate’s.

The who has the best education aspect isn’t in favor in Obama. I don’t see this. Especially when you consider Romney or Dr Paul. Or for that matter Roemer.

“Dittohead” is the term used by fans of the Rush Limbaugh show, because he is able to articulate what many of them believe, so when they call his show, they just say “mega dittos Rush…and furthermore…”

Democrats and liberals use it in a derogatory way, much like they use “neocon” as a term of derogation against all Republicans.
You had to go and give the answer, Scott. I was hoping one of our liberal posters would tell me what they have heard it means. Oh, well.🙂

Well, thanks for the link. I was challenging the other posters who like to throw out accusations without backing them up. As for your link, I think its a pretty lame attempt to paint Gingrich as an opportunist without core values. Give a politician 33 years in the public eye and you’ll be able to find inconsistencies, but I don’t think the examples of Newt’s so-called flip flopping really call into question his basic conservative beliefs. Taxes, abortion, defense, etc. - I think if you went down the line of issues and interviewed him you’d find that his core beliefs are very similar to what he’s always believed. But, give someone 33 years and you’ll find areas where they changed. You’ll probably find issues where they will admit to being wrong.

So, again, nice try, but the flip flop charge against Gingrich is one that doesn’t hold water. Multi-marriages, yes. Adultery, yes. Sin, yes. Repentant, yes. But flip flopper, no.

Why is it ever since Kennedy, Catholics have this strange idea we shouldn’t give to the government what is the government and give to God what is God.

Who cares about Republican OR Democrat poles?

I’m more Republican than Democrat by far, bit the dems have 3x the social responsibility than Republicans. All those social programs created by the Democrats that help their fellow man in the 30’s and 40’s, the Republicans have been trying to end them ever since.

I think I would rather meet the Liberal idea Jesus of the bible than the mean spiteful “I’m going to punish you regadless” one, when I die. If I had to meet the Jesus some of you portray, I would be doomed.

Anyhow, thanks for giving me something to bring up at the Elders Meeting, the RCIA class I help teach, and the Liturgical group we have. Hopefully we can instill the concept of “helping others” is what matters. Not what religion they are.

You are making the common error of saying the Democrats are better at social doctrine because they support large, bureaucratic welfare programs. You should give te Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, where you learn that large, bureaucratic welfare programs are contrary to Church teaching.

I have MS. I know many Catholics in Denver with MS. We have all gotten more help from these huge beurocratic agencies you so condescendingly spoke of, like the 10k I received from Medicaid to make my home handicap accessible, than any of the money the church has offered. K of C has been a help. St Vincent Depaul has helped, but no one has been there to make my home liveable like the government.

I come from a weird family. My father-in-law is very rich and actually tithes 10% . He believes he should also be taxed more. He gives to charity what he feels he should be taxed to offset the difference. My father who is elderly and poor believes every social program is wrong, except the ones he uses.

Then again I prayed to God for help and that’s the door He opened. I refuse to tell God he is wrong. I’m not that dumb. As long as I praise God he opens the cracked door of confusion and hardship so it is a flood gate of grace and favor.

Don’t let politics cloud your faith.
