Glenn Beck rally will be a measure of the tea party's strength

No takers on what? Your silly accusation?

Sometimes, when someone spouts something silly, like your question, you will be ignored.
You don’t have to answer if you find it silly. I heard talk of honesty, integrity, the Holy Spirit and a speech given by God (and that’s just since joining this thread)…is it off the deep end to ask if he is a preacher now?

Back to the topic of this thread, about this being the measure of the tea party’s strength…

Taking into account that I am seeing his address today thru the prism of a former Mormon I think today’s rally is demonstrative of either tea party’s strength or weakness…I saw it as an evangelizing attempt (or in LDS-speak…missionary work of spreading the Gospel)…

JMO…
What struck me about today was it seemed much more like a gathering of Evangelicals than a gathering of Libertarian Tea Party members.

IMHO…

Thank you for that revealing peek through your prism…an evangelizing attempt huh? Interesting. Right now I’m watching him educate a group of young people about religious freedom, the constitution etc

Now I’m beginning to see the trend of this “evangelization” attempt: in response to a question about whether any elected representatives would be willing to die for the republic, he names Michelle Bachman as one such person who is according to him the main target. So the implication is what? Her life is in danger from someone? Guess all that remains is to motivate some supporters to ‘protect’ her I suppose…😦

Talk about psychological manipulation! I hope Catholics at least are not politically desperate enough to catch his type of ‘religion’…

Mr. Beck made a surprise visit on Friday to a convention held by FreedomWorks, a Tea Party umbrella group, for Tea Party supporters. He received a thunderous welcome from a crowd of about 1,600 in Constitution Hall.

He told the crowd that he had begun planning his march on Washington a year ago, thinking “it was supposed to be political.”

“And then I kind of feel like God dropped a giant sandbag on my head,” he said.

“My role, as I see it, is to wake America up to the backsliding of principles and values and most of all of God,” he said. “We are a country of God. As I look at the problems in our country, quite honestly, I think the hot breath of destruction is breathing on our necks and to fix it politically is a figure that I don’t see anywhere.”

I just switched off his show and that part about the sandbag just might be correct…he might need a CAT scan ASAP.

agreed

This seemed a minor event in impact on the country.

It may be. It may be just August entertainment. Then again, it may be the start of a movement to restore God to the public sphere. That wouldn’t be such a bad thing I don’t think.

Any movement that can bring from 300 - 500 thousand men, women and children to Washington is a significant one - an American one. That was as true on August 28th, 1963, as it was today, even if it took time for all of America to interpret Martin Luther King, Jr’s Dream.

I think the encouragement message of how we all should keep God as part of the equation in our lives is a wonderful message and I dont really mind who is saying it…

That said it would also be prudent to take his speech with caution…There were some definite Mormon under tones to it…(and Mormons are great people who, when they are authentic in trying to live up to the covenants that they make are serious about their discipleship with Christ)

That said…Mormonism is a corrupted form of Christianity …(I hope this doesnt sound unchariable…its just ment to be honest appraisal…)

We are encouraged to be gentle as doves yet wise as serpents… 🙂

That is probably true when you listen to anyone who is not Catholic preach. But I don’t think Beck crossed any unseen lines today.

We all are:

“Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves.” Matt 10:16

And you’re suggesting that Glenn Beck who regularly misrepresents what the Catholic Church teaches not to mention his selective interpretation of American history is a beacon of honesty?

Glenn Beck strikes me as an egomaniac much too full of his own self-importance. He speaks as if he considers himself a prophet, and even when he is being “humble,” he is really trumpeting his humility before the millions (false humility, in other words).

This rally will disappear shortly from the country’s consciousness.

To be replaced by what? Another Obama vacation? The Ground Zero mosque? Who is Kim Kardashian sleeping with now?

My wife watches Beck regularly. I take him with a grain of salt. He doesn’t get everything right, but I don’t see him as an egomaniac. He is an admitted recovering alcoholic.

The rally on Saturday was not supposed to be about politics anyway.

It will be replaced by all the other concerns of the country, but my guess is primarily by ongoing struggles with the economy and then, of course, by the Nov. elections. In America, faith is private. There is nothing much to DO in public about it. We get reminded of salvation and its blessings, then we have to get up for work again the next morning and worry about any possibility for retirement without suffering.

I actually think that Beck has the emptiest show on Fox. (although, I probably don’t know them all). He says nothing but empty platitudes.

. He speaks as if he considers himself a prophet,
I caught that too…very strong Mormon undertone there…

I do agree that the rally yesterday will quickly fade because of it’s religious overtones. Faith tends to be very personal and private for many. These kinds of religious rallies tend to make people a bit put off if they do not realize that is what the rally is about.

Im guessing that many of the thousands that attended didnt expect this kind of flavor. Many are, and rightfully so, very concerned with their own economic situation.

This rally is a symptom of what is going on with the country’s consciousness. People are mad-I suspect most of them are like -me shaking their head in disgust at the state of our national government in waiting for November.

People ignore the message at their own risk. Sniping at the rally because there weren’t enough blacks in the crowd or because Beck is a Mormon, charlatan, egomaniac, etc. is as a kind of condescdening marginalization go to sleep of their views that people are upset with. We are told we don’t know what’s best for us-we are told that our concerns are invalid unless a requisite number of minorities agree with us, we are told to keep our faith in ourselves, we are told that morality is determined by the ruling class and not by the will of the people. The ruling class would do well to take to heart the words of the fictional Howard Beale. `We are mad as hell and we are not going to take it anymore"

Beck rally signals election trouble for Dems

WASHINGTON (AP) - If Democrats had doubts about the voter unrest that threatens to rob them of their majority in Congress, they needed only look from the Capitol this weekend to the opposite end of the National Mall.

It’s where Ken Ratliff joined tens of thousands of other anti-government activists at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial for conservative commentator Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally.
“There’s gotta’ be a change, man,” said Ratliff, a 55-year-old Marine veteran from Rochester, N.Y.

Who says any of this? That Beck is a blow-hard doesn’t mean that the people in the crowd were disingenuous. No one has said that. 🤷 But we will see how it plays across the country, and in the cities, where over half the country’s population resides, and in the youth, where the country’s future resides.

Those in control of the government-on a daily basis

They said they weren’t black enough.

We will see. And unlike me you are not going to be very happy with the results.

That’s where you’re wrong. I have often been on the losing side of many votes. And I am never “unhappy” about it. Politics hardly matter in the daily lives of most working class people.

Work, save, watch your health, be good; work, save, watch your health, be good; work, save, watch your health, be good.

Didn’t say at all abortion was laughable. Said I find calling the GOP the party of life laughable. The GOP is simply far from pro life in my view. But that’s because my definition of pro life far exceeds one issue. Though yes I know the Catholic Church has elevated this one issue like no other. Even more I believe than Jesus did. But that’s probably because when I read the Gospels I find social justice issues mentioned far more than the word abortion mentioned by Jesus. In any case, God bless and peace.
One little issue of 50 million dead in a generation.

Nobody’s pro-life views are limited to one issue. Anyone who is pro-life are pro-life in a side variety of ways, and sometimes for sure those views conflict as to what is the best way to sustain life in its fulles.

50 million dead in a generation is an issue like no other. It is the black death that is sweeping away a third of our humanity. It is the elephant in the room that no pro-life can ignore and still be counted as authentically pro-life.

The Catholic Church correctly elevates this issue as a primary focus for our political decision making for indeed no other issue is affecting us so gravely. Some Catholics choose to listen; others laugh it off as little consequence in comparison to their much graver pro-life issues. Sized up against those grave pro-life issues, 50 million American lives snuffed out pale in comparison.
