Secondly, just because someone is gay does not mean that they can’t be the best Catholic that they can be. There is nothing wrong with just “being gay.” It is actually living the life style that is a mortal sin. We have no idea if Andy actually lived the life style. So we can’t say anything about anything.
Andy Warhol was the best catholic that he could be but he was definitively not celibate. He had a life long gay lover. I guess that like Oscar Wilde he had to find a way to conciliate that fact with his Catholicism. To compensate in private.
And of course he was the “pope” of NYC avant garde in the late 60s and the 70s.

I think it is difficult to tell who are really Catholic yet sometimes it is reflective in their work, sometimes not.

A poster posted Mae West(Boys, come up and see me sometime!)
I’d question if she practiced.

Katherine Hepburn was mention but it was her mother and her father(Dr. Hepburn) who initially helped Margaret Sanger’s birth control movement to go forth.

Gregory Peck voice made an impression and made it one of the most widely aired commercial because of news coverage against pro-life Bork for Supreme Court Justice using Bork’s remark about “right to privacy”.

Oh, okay. If you have proof that he was not celibate then I stand corrected. I guess he actually made it publically known that he was not celibate?

No, he did not say that he was a active homosexual or challenge publically the Church teachings but his manierisms and his live in lover do not deny either that he was not active.

I already knew that Mel Gibson was a Catholic, however I did not realize Nicole Kidman was one too. Goodness, you learn something new every day. 🙂

Yes she is Catholic. She got her first marriage to Tom annulled before she married her current husband. Since I don’t “keep up” or even care to at this point, I don’t even know if she is still married.

Unfortunately she also signed up for the second of three anti-Catholic movies, with the first being The Golden Compass. It’s as if the producers of the movie hand-picked her because she is Catholic. This way they can say, “but she’s Catholic, so we are not trying to bash the Catholic Church.” Yea right.

[off] btw, I like your name. I was going to pick something with “smiley” in my screenname but many were already taken. I also like names with “rose” in it because I love roses. So you have both names combined; nice choice for a name. 😃 [/off]

So I guess we can’t really say anything, can we?

Oscar Wilde was an “11th hour convert”–he converted very shortly before his death–which is fine, parable of the workers in the vineyard and all that, but here is my favorite Wilde quote:

“The Catholic Church is only for saints and sinners–for “respectable people” the Anglican Church will do”

So I guess we can’t really say anything, can we?
I guess is up to God. I really like the Velvet Underground and Moe Tucker is Catholic.
“The Catholic Church is only for saints and sinners–for “respectable people” the Anglican Church will do”
My favorite OW quote. Oftem I used to explain the difference between the two churches. 😃

I don’t think he knows the faith, not sure on that one though. I don’t even know if he’s actually a practicing Catholic. 😦 I’m not sure so don’t quote me on this. But from what I’ve seen on TV he doesn’t seem to know the faith. Does he?
Jumping into this thread late, but Stephen really is. He’s devout and teaches Sunday school. Some of what comes across is his persona on the Colbert Report.

A little unimportant trivia about Mark Consuelos;
He was born in Spain of Mexican parents but does not speak Spanish. He lived in Italy for a time so he does speak Italian.
I just find it strange that he was born in Spain and is Mexican but does not speak Spanish.
I was born here in the U.S. I’m Mexican and I DO speak Spanish. How can someone be born in Spain to Mexican parents and NOT speak Spanish? 😛 Oh well.
I don’t know. I’m Hispanic and didn’t learn Spanish growing up. My parents all spoke Spanish but growing up they were discouraged from speaking Spanish in Catholic school by the sisters and Christian Brothers.

Maybe his parents felt like knowing English would be more valuable to him growing up. I know that’s why a lot of my friends didn’t learn Spanish growing up and the sad thing about that, is the Spanish that was spoken where I live (an old 16th C. Castillian
Spanish) is being lost.

Ack, let me add someone to this thread so that I don’t hijack it completely. Some other Catholics in Hollywood. Charisma Carpenter and David Boreaneaz from “Angel” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

In new my years as a fangirl would come in handy. 😃

Paul McCartney (sort of), He was baptized a Catholic and parents were married in a Roman Catholic chapel. I saw him in concert a couple years ago, and he spoke very highly of both his Irish and Catholic heritage during his show.

Is he Hollywood, maybe not like kind of folks described in this thread, but he was in a couple movies in his day.

Oh, and also Paul’s band mate, George Harrison, also born and raised in Catholic home…

I’ve read some bios of Liberace demonstrating that he was incredibly generous with his great wealth. He helped a lot of people and charities. And who knows how much money he gave to the Church? I know one of the greatest moments in his life was his audience with the Pope. (I have an album–yes, an old LP!–where he actually mentions this event in his life.)
He seemed generous. I had a relative with medical problems as a child, and her mother wrote to Liberace just telling him how her daughter loved listening to him play on tv, and he sent her a piano so she could learn to play too!
I’m glad that GOD decides who goes to heaven! It seems to me that Liberace obeyed Jesus’s commands to feed the hungry and clothe the naked, etc., and therefore, Jesus will know him in heaven. I know that the Bible teaches that homosexuality is an abomination, but Jesus didn’t have much to say about this. We don’t know what sins Liberace confessed to his priest; perhaps week after week he confessed homosexual sin and was truly sorry for his inability to stop. Or perhaps he was homosexual but lived chastely. We don’t know. God knows, and I personally hope that Liberace will be in heaven playing that most gorgeous piano in the universe!
Exactly, I agree with every word in this post.

A true Catholic should come across as CATHOLIC even if he/she is in the media. His persona should not be “motivated” as something other than Catholic on screen. He just doesn’t seem Catholic to me from what I have seen in the past. If he is Catholic then he should not be ashamed of his faith and “speak as Catholic.” I’m not saying that he should say that he’s Catholic but just not talk some of the stuff that I’ve heard him talk. A real Catholic would not say some of the things that he says on TV. I would not want this guy teaching my daughter in CCD. Sorry, but that’s how I feel.

Have you watched The Colbert Report? It’s a comedy show in the first place. His persona is a the character he plays, it’s not really him. He is playing a right-wing, type news pundit, citing Bill O’Reily as an inspiration. Whatever he does in private, is part of his private life. So, if he practices his faith, teaches Catechism and receives the sacraments, that’s part of his private life and is probably best left to him and God.I don’t think anyone should grandstand or show off their faith. There are certainly people I know who attend Mass to be seen and not to be there to hear the Word or receive the Eucharist.

However, in character, he has been a great defender of the faith, from reciting the “Nicene Creed” on Air, to talking positively about the Pope, Rome and last year he wore his ashes from Ash Wednesday on air.

Like any human being, who happens to be Catholic, we all are different. No one but God knows what’s in our hearts, minds and souls and no one but God has a right to make judgments about anyone for the amount of faith one has or doesn’t have.

And I really hate these sorts of discussions as to who’s more devout and Catholic than others, or what parish is better or what priest makes the most liturgical abuses in Mass.

Bowing out now.
