Read in context, paul may have used the term father as a description toward fatherhood, but not as a title or exhaltation, which Christ is clearly warning against as you can see by reading Matt. 23 in its entirety…
We honor those whom God has placed over us in authority, as the Apostolic Tradition teaches us to do. If it bothers you to call the Pope the Holy Father, then I suggest you refrain from doing so!
Rom 12:10
10 love one another with brotherly affection;** outdo one another in showing honor.**
Prov 29:23
he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.
Dan 11:39
those who acknowledge him he shall magnify with honor.
We honor him as a spiritual father…
Matt 15:3-5
4 For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die.’
As the pope serves Jesus, he is honored for doing so…
John 12:26
26 If any one serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Father will honor him.
All of the Apostles and their successors have been so honored…
Acts 5:12-13
12 Now many signs and wonders were done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico. 13 None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high honor.
Rom 13:7
7 Pay all of them their dues, taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due,
honor to whom honor is due.
Phil 2:29-30
9 So receive him in the Lord with all joy; and
honor such men, 30 for he nearly died for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete your service to me.
1 Tim 5:17
17 Let the elders who rule well
be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching;
The honor we give to the bishop of Rome is entirely scriptural and appropriate. If you disrespect him, and his office, that is between you and God. Why do you criticise us for being faithful to the teaching of Christ?
I think you made this up…He uses the title only for His Father in heaven!
Show me, otherwise…Cuz I beg to differ.
Matt 15:3-5
4 For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die.’
