Horowitz: Philippines had the harshest lockdown and most mask wearing. It didn’t work.

Nowhere is the circuitous insanity and national masochism of lockdown policies more evident than in the Philippines. This nation of over 100 million holds the distinction of having undergone the longest and most severe lockdown. They also have the highest rate of mask wearing in the world, according to a recent survey. In other words, they’ve done everything the propagators of corona panic porn every dreamt of. Yet…

Cases are surging because you can’t run or hide from a respiratory virus.

Their answer? A new lockdown – all the while missing the irony that the first series of totalitarian mandates didn’t work. Now they have a weakened and destitute population to face the virus, while countries like Sweden achieved de facto herd immunity from a position of strength.

Just how insane was the lockdown in the Philippines? Beginning as early as March 15, under the direction of President Rodrigo Duterte, anyone under 21 or over 60 was not allowed out of his home, only one family member could go out for food and medicine, and there was an across-the-board curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. President Duterte threatened to have violators shot.

Tens of thousands of people in America likely died as a result of the lockdown – could you imagine how many hundreds of thousands died from lack of food and medical care in a poor country from such a severe policy of house arrest? This country has been suffering from a hunger crisis for years. The cruel irony is that only 2,000 people have died of COVID-19 in the country of 100 million. Like most Asian countries, they probably have a high degree of cross-immunity from coronavirus colds.

Aside from the insane lockdown, the Philippines holds the distinction of having the highest degree of mask compliance. After all, people don’t want to get shot.

So, after destroying their country, one would think they at least “got rid” of the virus, right?

Wrong! The virus does what it does . . . .

I am from the Philippines, and it is shocking to see the spike in numbers of those people who are having this pest pandemic. Sad to say that many people are stranded in transportation terminals just to go back in their provinces because Manila is overly crowded. The past goverments only focused on the development of Manila and pretty much forget about the development of other provinces. Many Jobs and businesses are in Manila thats why many who are from the provinces work there. Now that theres a pandemic, Manila became the place where many people become infected because of the overpopulation and tight living spaces of informal settlers. The government is trying to implement a rule where people are required to wear face shields not just masks. I observed through the news that people being infected everyday is between 3,000 to more than 5,000.

There is some sort of misunderstanding in the article imo,
Lockdowns weren’t meant to “ destroy” the virus, but to borrow time to get equipment and not overcrowd the system.
So… if I am reading properly, and there are 2000 persons deceased, attributing them a failure first and next relating it to masks and lockdown because they are seeing a resurge sounds at least confusing.
@angelo , did the system collapse or were they able to borrow time as expected for equipment?
Would you say that away from Manila there is no real health services so what they see as a resurge is in fact some sort of spread?
Just so as to understand the situation there. Thanks in advance

Lockdowns weren’t meant to “ destroy” the virus . . .
Are you sure you are reading the correct article?

The word “destroy” was not even used.

The root is used once and used in the context of a rhetorical question.

Here it is again (from the article) . . . .
So, after destroying their country, one would think they at least “got rid” of the virus, right?

Wrong! The virus does what it does and was always bound to come to southern latitude countries later, as we are seeing in places like Israel and Hawaii. The national lockdown was in place until June 1 and many local places still had lockdowns until July.
Bold mine added.

Indirectly. “ Got rid” of the virus.
The headline goes to point out “ lock down and (+) mask wearing”.

However, the goal is not to "get rid’ of the virus but to reduce the deaths and hospitalizations. So if only 2000 people died out of 100 million due to the severe lockdown and mask wearing, that is much better than 160,000 out of 300 million in the U.S., is it not? Even Dr. Fauci stated that mask wearing and social distancing do not give anyone a perfect guarantee of not becoming ill. And, as far as the lockdown is concerned, if it is mostly restricted to those under 21 and over 60, and one family member was allowed to go shopping for food and medicine, then those who went outside were still exposed to the virus. But they had at least better protection by wearing masks and social distancing than those in the U.S. who did neither.

This article is dangerous misinformation.

There are also major cities outside Manila like Cebu City in the Visayas and Davao City in Mindanao and they have COVID cases as well. But Manila has the most cases. There are also real health services outside Manila but the major laboratories are in Manila. I also heard in the news that many hospitals are not accepting anymore patients with COVID because theres no room for them. I dont know if the system collapse but our health system is burdened greatly by this pandemic.

Oh also, it is not true that people are getting shot if they dont comply on wearing masks. Those people are just being arrested, recorded and will be sent back home at least in my area.

yeah yeah, lets all misconstrue situations and stats in a continuing effort at politically kidnapping a pandemic for motives and vested interests.

Shame on the reporters in that article

A bit of a newsflash from me, noone can control this pandemic, this little sucker of a virus is doing what it wants where it wants.

Humans can only hope to limit its effects and investation with certain measures, all scientifically shown to be robust.

Are we forgetting only God can control this?

Troubling. Sorry to read about the troubles the Philippines are having with the COVID virus despite the harsh lockdown measures. That would be depressing, to have harsh measures and to see it not work. With so many Philippine people forced to stay home, it reminds me of New York. It was pointed out that 70% of those that passed away from the Wuhan virus had been stay home, not going out, limiting contact. Maybe it is more helpful to allow people to get outside more.

I wonder what S. Korea is doing different. Last I read they are not experiencing the same level of issues.

Its truly depressing, lets pray this pandemic will be over soon. Staying indoors for so long truly develops anxiety

Thank you , angelo.
I understand, the more complexity the cases the less hospitals away from the big cities available to deal with them.
As far as extended lockdown , I can understand how it feels .

Just hope it will soon be ok for you and all.:pray:t2:
Thanks again.

Good point angelo.

After awhile there is more harm than good with lockdowns, masks, etc.

This is yet another example of problems of risk outweighing not much benefit. (As you stated, your hospitals are overflowing despite all these mask and stay-home measures).

Horowitz: More than money: GDP loss from lockdowns will cost millions of life years World News
Horowitz: More than money: GDP loss from lockdowns will cost millions of life years Daniel Horowitz August 6, 2020 In 1957, America was faced with a flu-like virus that had a similar fatality rate to COVID-19 and was even more disruptive in some ways. Yet, Americans understood that these viruses cannot be stopped, and they slogged along without shutting down their economy and infringing upon liberties. Which, as I mentioned before, is why almost nobody living at the time remembers it. Contrast …
You also stated regarding mask issues . . . .
Those people are just being arrested, recorded and will be sent back home . . .
I’m sorry to hear about that, especially given that there is no scientifically proven benefits with masking a society.

I am also sorry to hear about your leader threating to shoot you folks (glad he is not doing it though) for mask non-compliance.

Nope.
It is being successful given their curcumstances and situation thanks to lock down and mask. Angelo said the system hasn’t collapsed.
What may be missing is personnel in little hospitals inland to deal with difficult cases in general. They are not alone
Shame on the article to drag foreign situations into US politics and this stuff about masks.

Sure. Hospitals overflowing with infected patients now equals “success” (“successful”).

Given their reality, it is.
Not perfect but so far they seem to be giving good battle
I don’t think you understand how it works in a different place.
It is interesting when a thread covers another country or the international, please leave it as foreign so we can participate without getting into your politics. Please…
