How can pro-choice Catholics seriously call themselves practicing Catholics?

They could only be less happy, since true happiness can only come through growing in holiness, growing closer to Him. Embracing the unholy can ultimately only lead to the unhappiness of separation from Him.

Here you go…

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

63% of Catholics who attend Mass at least once a week view Abortion should be illegal is all/most cases (which is still kind of high, but I’m sure that includes people who only attend weekly because of their spouse, parents or kids)

I also find these stats to be interesting

Overall, pretty disturbing. Especially in those who claim their faith is very important and that they understand morality. Obviously some are lying to themselves or deluded.

When Catholics say this I don’t think they understand pro-choice. Being pro-choice doesn’t mean you would have an abortion, or even recommend one. Many pro-choice people do everything they can to help women NOT have abortions. I am pro-choice (to a degree) and - not trying to blow my own horn - have done more to help woman not have abortions than any Catholic I know, most of which don’t really care at all about pregnant women.

Pro-choice means you believe a woman has the right, up to a certain point, of deciding for HERSELF, what she wants to do with her body. It is not YOUR right to force her to do anything. Our job is to give her enough choice so that she WANTS to keep the child. My personal opinion is that approach to pro-choice is far more moral and ethical than what is preached and enforced by the conservative Catholic wing.

Now keep in mind this is not a black and white issue.

That doesn’t really make the position that better and I’m sure many people are aware about what pro-choice people believe in general, though there are variants.

The I’m personally pro-life argument is known well enough.

Why is this not accepted by the pro-life crowd? Let’s all agree that abortion is wrong. Let’s get past that.
So now, is the answer making it illegal and throwing doctors in jail? Is the answer forcing a poor woman to raise a child she doesn’t want? Are you trying to solve the problem, or are you just aiming for votes if you are a politician, regardless of what it does to society?

“Pro-life” doesn’t solve anything. Until Catholics realize this isn’t a perfect world, and start proposing and implementing practical and effective solutions, we won’t solve the problem.

The answer is…wait for it…
chastity before marriage. And that, requires living the way God wants human beings to live.

The pro-choice people haven’t been making much progress either so there aren’t many options with all the incompetence.

I just dont buy the poor catechisis angle. I mean no doubt we have poor catechisis, I’m shocked by things on these threads from practicing Catholics But I’ve never met a person in real life, Catholic or not, that didn’t know at least the simple fact that the church is against abortion. And to be honest the Church doesnt need to really say more than that.

You could contact Priests for Life and they might have statistics.

This is based on private conversations I have had with people in the Catholic Church. Other people I know have had similar conversations with people who have liberal beliefs about abortion.
I am disappointed in the number of pro-choice I have encountered in those I have talked to.

How do liars seriously call themselves practicing Catholics?
How do coveters seriously call themselves practicing Catholics?
How do adulterers seriously call themselves practicing Catholics?
How do thieves seriously call themselves practicing Catholics?
How does any sinner seriously call themselves practicing Catholics?

Wouldn’t they usually feel guilty about these things though and not outwardly support them?

There’s a difference between mortal sin and venial sin. Not to mention if one is repentant or not in which case they would try to fix their errors.

This fallacy influences lots of Christians, not just Catholics, to squeamishly accept the rhetoric of “choice.” They aren’t bad people. They know abortion is morally wrong. But they worry, “How can I possibly imperil a woman’s health or rob a woman of choices?”
The most successful way to end poverty in any society is to allow abortion. It’ actually not even close. Forcing a woman to raise and take care of a child she cannot afford to not only ruins her life but the life of the child, increasing crime, disease, poverty.
I am NOT saying abortion is the answer. Far from it.
Gotta love how children born to mothers who don’t want them are told they and everyone else would be better off if they were never born at all.

As far as social welfare funded through the government…this is my take on it:
So called “free” birth control is not free. It’s funded through taxation and as such it’s not held accountable to any measures of performance because taxes fund it whether it does its job or not (and taxes aren’t optional). Liberals like you enjoy pretending government social programs are the solution when in fact they’ve never worked ever since the almighty FDR.

Those sins I’ve listed specifically are all grave matters, as far as I know.
  1. Grave matter is specified by the [Ten Commandments]

Rhetorical question buddy. If they aren’t repentant and show no intention of repenting, it’s hard to believe they’re trying to be good Catholics.

You are simplifying the issue. The pro-life position is based upon a fallacious foundation, specifically that we live in a fair and good world and any abortion is an injustice. This is simply not true. Look at the facts. The most successful way to end poverty in any society is to allow abortion. It’ actually not even close. Forcing a woman to raise and take care of a child she cannot afford to not only ruins her life but the life of the child, increasing crime, disease, poverty.
Well of COURSE killing poor people in the womb lessens the amount of poor people being born, and thus poverty. From a moral standpoint that’s the worst argument for abortion, ever.

You mentioned sinners in general and lying isn’t always grave matter. The repentance part is really important too.
