I don’t understand why you have such difficulty with someone disagreeing with you. You make a generalisation about difficulties of language and I disagree, AND STATE WHY. That would be seen as a reasonable way of discussing.

I’ve tutored in English to a migrant and am fully aware of the general difficulties, but the fact that this person will one day accomplish a level of English that is deemed proficient is both reassuring to me and people like me who undertake such ordeals and also undermines your proposition about the insurmountable difficulties of translations. For, if you’re talking about translations in general you seem to be setting Arabic up as some super-weird language that no one has ever quite grasped… except those who are cradle Arabic speakers.

If you’re talking about individuals posting here, then I’ve already stated my bit on ‘their’ problem

I’m sorry if the mere fact I’ve replied to you is disturbing your world. Perhaps a blog site where you can monologue away would better suit

When you discuss rather than snarl, I might (possibly) consider it.
I still think you’re wrong about language. You’re more than welcome to say why you think I’m wrong.

It surely isn’t productive for you to state “You’re just too smart for me…”. I have no idea what you would hope to achieve by these quips. It doesn’t add to discussion of the subject at all, but it certainly gets us talking here at least.

Perhaps adding me to your ignore list would be better.

God gave me a brain, and I discern that Muhammed’s behavior was unholy, far from the holiness of Jesus. I follow Jesus.
And so then, your answer to your Creator on the Day of Judgment as to why you chose to not believe the Qur’an is that it is not because it contains any discrepancies but rather it’s because you have discerned that the behavior of the Messenger (pbuh) was “unholy”?

I think that you need to read your own Bible to learn what is deemed acceptable or “holy” behavior by the Prophets of God.

You will find that the character and behavior of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to be in total agreement with moral guidelines as found in the Bible.

When you say that the behavior of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was not holy, what are you basing your assessment on – the teachings of the Bible or just your own sentiments?

If it is the latter, then I suggest that you really should prepare a better answer than this as to why you have rejected the Qur’an on the Day when you will be questioned by your Creator.
I have never visited answering islam.org. But now you are asking for discrepancies that have not been found by that website? Why?

And to backtrack a second, let’s assume there is no discrepancy, not a single one in Quran, what does that prove? It is not exactly rocket science to write a book that doesn’t openly contradict itself.
As far as I know, ALL of the questions and accusations brought up by www.answering-Islam.org have in fact been answered by www.answering-Christianity.com.

And so, I do not see a need to re-hash the same old issues over and over again and hence I do not pay much attention to answering-Islam.org… unless of course there is a new issue which has not been asked before.

Scriptures should not contain any discrepancies i.e. it should never contradict itself and neither should it be in conflict with established scientific facts.

It is not easy at all to come up with a scripture that does not contain even a single discrepancy within it – the Bible certainly does not qualify in this regard and neither do the scriptures of other faiths such as the Bhagavad Gita.

And even for secular writings, it is no mean feat either.

A good example of this would be Shakespeare’s play, Henry the Fourth, in which some of the characters discuss bees and mention that the bees are soldiers and have a king. That is what people thought in Shakespeare’s time - that the bees that one sees flying around are male bees and that they go home and answer to a king.

However, that is not true at all. The fact is that they are females, and they answer to a queen and that the male bee never leaves his home to gather food and yet it took modern scientific investigations in the last 300 years to discover that this is the case.

By comparison, in the 16th chapter (Surah an-Nahl 16:68-69) the Qur’an mentions that the female bee leaves its home to gather food.

What this shows is that while the people of Shakespeare’s time who lived around 1,000 years after the Qur’an was revealed got their facts wrong about bees, the Qur’an did indeed state a scientific fact which modern science has only recently discovered.

In other words, Shakepeare’s play Henry the Fourth failed the test of Science but the Qur’an has no such discrepancy.

Then why did you bring up the topic in the first place? I just don’t get it.

And neither does the QUran. You can ignroe all the issues that have been raised. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist. There is, at a minimum, as good cause to say the Quran is contradictory as there is to say the Torah or Christian Bible is.
[/QUTOE]
Whether this is true or not has nothing to do with whether the play is consistent and non-contradicotry. We are discussing contradictions raised in the Quran – contradictions between various passages. If we are going to widen the field to contradictions between the Quran and reality, then the list will get much longer.
By comparison, in the 16th chapter (Surah an-Nahl 16:68-69) the Qur’an mentions that the female bee leaves its home to gather food.

I don’t think any of us will have any difficulties in saying that murder, assassination, child abuse, rape are just wrong! Your comments show how much Islam is truly Mohammedanism, and the worship of Mohammed. It’s sad that you can’t condemn various barbaric acts because Mohammed did them, and this is why Islam is a false religion that brings nothing but savagery and barbarism to the world.
Keep Islam hamba2han - we don’t want it.

You still have not answered by Muhammad would allow his scribe to change the wording of the Quran if it was indeed the word of God!

Is this a prime example of the sort of "scholarly rebuttlals that your friends of answering-christianity engage in??

“This christian snake, Jochen Katz, is no different from his masked terrorists and blood-thirsty christian thugs. He is another modern-day christian liar, but with colorful makeup to hide his face in like the rest of his church-organized goons! What he basically said above is that he will always allow the non-Muslims to use the false charges (even when he personally believes that they are absurd lies against the Noble Quran) against the Muslims by enabling them to give individual links to certain contradictions, on message boards and casual email-conversations, without giving the Muslim the opportunity to see the detailed refutation to this false charge on our and other Muslims’ web sites!”

Nice guy! 😛

None of those OT prophets were considered as models for all mankind as you claim Muhammad was, so that does not exonerate Muhammad.

.

Can you compare Muhammad’s behavior with Jesus’?? They were as different as night and day.

These words of Jesus about Satan could also be said about Muhammad.

"He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.

John 8.44

Satan is called in the Bible the “father of lies”
Allah is described somewhere in the Koran as “the chief of deceivers”
so we have essentially the same description for Satan, and Allah

Sure, but that doesn’t mean that the answers are convincing. The “sister of Aaron/daughter of Amram” answer is not convincing at all. The plain and obvious meaning of this passage is that at the time Muhammad wrote these words he had a very hazy view of the Biblical narrative. I have no doubt that he learned the stories better later on and declared elsewhere that Moses and Jesus lived centuries apart.

We have two hypotheses here:
  1. The Qur’an was written by a human being with limited knowledge, and reflects his shifting opinions over time.
  2. The Qur’an is the Word of God dictated to Muhammad, and directly and immediately reflects the infinite wisdom and goodness of God.
The first hypothesis explains the reference to Mary as “sister of Aaron” far better and more simply than the second hypothesis does. If there were strong evidence for the second hypothesis on other grounds, I would consider it. But I see no such evidence.
And so, I do not see a need to re-hash the same old issues over and over again
If the previous arguments have not convinced us, you will have to come up with new arguments or leave us alone!
and hence I do not pay much attention to answering-Islam.org
I don’t either.

You are contradicting yourself, because in your earlier post you said that you were talking about only internal discrepancies. Which is it?

I disagree with your premise–I have no problem with our Scriptures having discrepancies, because I believe that the Scriptures were inspired by God but written by human beings and reflect the limited perspectives of the human authors. The Scriptures set forth without erring that truth which God wanted to reveal to us for our salvation, but I do not believe that they are what you think the Qur’an is. I agree with you entirely that those Christians who make the claims for the Bible that you make for the Qur’an are flying in the face of the evidence!

As I’ve already shown, the criterion of “no discrepancies” is meaningless. My Davidian Scritpure has no discrepancies, yet that doesn’t mean it is true.

Secondly, the fact that one has called himself God’s prophet but then behaved in an unholy manner, having 120yr old Jewish man and many others assassinated simply because he didn’t like what they wrote, is one rather significant reason for rejecting Muhammed’s claim as being the holy one of God.

Another reason is that the Quran does nothing to improve the message of Jesus Christ–in fact, it seems to me to contradict and distort the holy message of God which came well before the Quran. Reading the Quran did nothing to create holiness in my life. It was far less inspiring that the Republic of Plato, Aristotle’s Nichomachean Ethics, and countless other texts I found more valuable in forming my conscience and helping me to live a life of virtue. Yet, I don’t consider Socrates, Plato, or Aristotle the prophet of God. That distinction is given only to Jesus, and in others only insofar as they assert that which was asserted by Jesus…

Just because some rather unholy person from Arabia says he got this revelation from God does not mean that I should consider his testimony as trustworthy. I have to prayerfully consider his claims in the light of many other contrary claims, and discern for myself whose claim to be the holy one of God is most compelling. I have to test it by comparing the proposed teachings to what I believe is true based upon my experience, my reason, and the most trustworthy testimony of those I know have only my best interests at heart. I have to consider the fruit which has come forth from each of those proposed teachings. Given this more comprehensive test, Islam fails to be convincing.
I think that you need to read your own Bible to learn what is deemed acceptable or “holy” behavior by the Prophets of God.
There’s a reason I don’t follow the prophet Jonah, but instead follow the prophet Jesus. I think you need to realize that I’m a Christian not a Jew, which means the only prophet I follow is Jesus. My Bible describes that Jesus is sinless. In contrast, Islamic scholars openly admit to what I consider to be rather immoral acts of Muhammed. Was his immorality the fruit of his beliefs? I think so.

The appearant contradictions of the Mormon Scriptures are just as cleverly explained by them as are the appearant contradictions of the Quran or Jewish or Christian Scriptures. You may think you’ve developed a clever polemic, but for anyone who has spent anytime studying world religions, your polemic is nonsensical.

On the day of judgment, my answer to my Creator will be that I sought to follow that which He revealed to me through that which he created and supernaturally through his Holy Spirit. My answer will be that although that I most firmly believe that his holy priest, prophet, and King is His Divine Son, Jesus Christ, and then I will, as I do now, ask Him for forgiveness for those times when I failed to follow the will of His Holy Son, then humbly admit to Him that His judgment of my soul, whatever it may be, will surely be just.

The fools (pagans, hypocrites, and Jews) among the people will say, “What has turned them (Muslims) from their Qiblah (prayer direction (towards Jerusalem)) to which they were used to face in prayer.” Say, (O Muhammad SAW) “To Allah belong both, east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a Straight Way.”
( سورة البقرة , Al-Baqara, Chapter #2, Verse #142)

Say (O Muhammad SAW): My Lord has commanded justice and (said) that you should face Him only (i.e. worship none but Allah and face the Qiblah, i.e. the Kabah at Makkah during prayers) in each and every place of worship, in prayers (and not to face other false deities and idols), and invoke Him only making your religion sincere to Him by not joining in worship any partner to Him and with the intention that you are doing your deeds for Allahs sake only. As He brought you (into being) in the beginning, so shall you be brought into being (on the Day of Resurrection) (in two groups, one as a blessed one (believers), and the other as a wretched one (disbelievers)).
( سورة الأعراف , Al-Araf, Chapter #7, Verse #29)

**Historical fact as well as Qur’an that Islamic prayers were first directed toward Jerusalem. **
I cannot see any discrepancy here since it is a well known fact that Allah (swt) did indeed command that the Qiblah be changed from Jerusalem to Makkah.
And when We change a Verse (of the Quran, i.e. cancel (abrogate) its order) in place of another, and Allah knows the best of what He sends down, they (the disbelievers) say: “You (O Muhammad SAW) are but a Muftari! (forger, liar).” Nay, but most of them know not.
( سورة النحل , An-Nahl, Chapter #16, Verse #101)
Whatever a Verse (revelation) do We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring a better one or similar to it. Know you not that Allah is able to do all things?
( سورة البقرة , Al-Baqara, Chapter #2, Verse #106)
Sounds like someone changed their mind.
The Qur’an was revealed over a period of 23 years and it was initially implemented on a society which was primarily pagan in their beliefs and therefore it was a gradual transformation to a society that wholeheartedly embraced a monotheistic belief based on the supremeness of their Creator.

Think of the revelation of the Qur’an as a building project and think of the few abrogated verses as the scaffolding used in the early stages of the construction.

Once the structure of the building has been constructed, there was no longer any need to retain the scaffolding.

In short, it was certainly not a case of the Creator changing His mind but rather it was indeed meant to be that way.
Why in the world would God say this?
I do not see any problem or discrepancy here.

Oh, so for Muslims they can say this, but for Christians the same thing would be a “discrepancy”. How convenient.

I repeat – There is NO discrepancy to be found in the Qur’an.

Alluding to my previous analogy, the building has been completed and there are no defects whatsoever.
