Purgatory involves both purification and expiation. I don’t see why anyone would want to sin considering it would mean you are separated from God and the have to suffer in purgatory.

I mean, by all means. If you really don’t care, go sin venially if you think it’s worth it. I believe God’s commandments are what’s objectively best for us.
 
Lol. Gov is practically asking God to cook him a bit better in purgatory. Have fun bro.
 
God sincerely desires the salvation of all, and provides sufficient grace for this to be possible. We echo this desire in the Fatima Prayer: “O, My Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell, and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy Mercy.” Even so, Scripture and observation make it abundantly clear that not all avail themselves of this mercy. While the identity of the reprobate is concealed from us until Judgment Day, that there will be reprobate is clear in Scripture, and furthermore, there are many sinners whose final act before death was to show contempt for God’s mercy in what they knew to be their final hour, as testified by eyewitnesses. What hope is there for someone who, knowing he is about to face God, blasphemes Him and openly refuses mercy?
 
That’s why I tell people I believe purgatory has literal fire which hurts more than fire on earth. Each sin you commit extends you stay in that fire by a year. That’ll scare 'em good. 😉

Christ is the only. You seem to think that if Christ saves all then somehow Buddha is helping.
 
Evangelism makes complete sense. Why does God ask us to evangelize in the first place? It’s not like He needs us! It is a joy to participate in the proclamation of the Gospel of Our Lord! God uses us lowly creatures to do His great work!
 
No, you’re completely missing the point of what Gov and I are saying. You should go back and reread this whole thread.

I am not at all advocating for people to sin just for the fun of it and then go get deep-fried in Purgatory.

I was trying to point out the fallacy of trying to reconcile universal salvation and the necessity of keeping to the moral law.

It is very similar to the arguments against the Protestant belief of “once saved, always saved.”

Those who believe this ultimately conclude that it doesn’t matter what they do, they will be saved in the end.

The Bible and the Magesterium do not teach this. All of Scripture is explicit in declaring that we must persevere and live in holiness, and to not reject God, because rejecting Him will lead to our damnation.

Nowhere does Jesus say that there any other alternative. If we reject God, we will be separated from Him, with wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Just because God desires all to be saved doesn’t mean that ALL will be.
 
Those who reject God are objectively wrong for doing so. They are ignorant and need a doctor.

Now you’re just making stuff up. Don’t be adding on to revealed revelation. This won’t help anyone…we don’t want to scare people into the Church. 😠

We’re not Jonathan Edwards preaching fire and brimstone.

It’s about helping people fall in love with Jesus and His Church.
 
I see where you are coming from, but I still disagree. I do not believe that knowing you will one day be with God for eternity gives you the license to sin.

Also, the Protestant “once saved, always saved" is irrelevant because they don’t believe in punishment after death that isn’t eternal hell.
 
The “e” is rather dated…kind of oppressive binary bias, even.
 
Punishment and a doctor… 😛 I guess. I have to admit I haven’t thought through the full implications of how punishment fits into purgatory. I was just a Protestant last year, you know. It is still odd for me to think of those who are saved as being punished.
 
Purgatory isn’t about punishment as much as it’s about being purified from our attachment to sin.
 
I think Dante does a great job explaining Purgatory.

Think of it this way. If your child sins against you, you punish her by taking away privileges, but then you also wait until she repents and you bring her back into the family. You can speed this process by talking to her and teaching her to behave. There’s both punishment and treatment.
 
Then how do you explain indulgences? Does the Church release you of your need for purification? By no means! We need all the purification we can get!
