I didn’t imply that. Is it possible that you inferred it because I used the worst of the bunch to dispel the idea that **priests are somehow more worthy of trust **than other groups?
But when did anyone say that on this thread, A?

I’ve been constructing my posts in a separate notepad file, trying to post them, seeing how far over the limit I am and then breaking the posts down into forum-acceptable chunks.

Responding to C659Smith gave me a message something like “your post is 26,501 characters, the limit is 5,000 characters, please edit your post” so it was mildly disgruntling to see it all swept aside with “lol you believe there’s no god” and “prove the revolutionary war” ,which is a topic I’m pretty sure I have given no indication I have any knowledge in at all.

By the way, I have had a few beers tonight so I am just in ‘chat’ mode, and I just want to warn people not to expect any particularly noteworthy responses from me until tomorrow.
That’s really funny! 😃 I might just have to take a page from you and break open my Sake bottle!

I might look that up, but it does nothing to answer why your god heals all kinds of illness (according to your myths) but never an amputee.
Is it because he hates them?
Jesus restored the severed/amputated ear of the high priests servant in the Garden of Gethsemene. Does that count?

It looks a lot to me like they just do it themselves, because they believe, not because of anything divine.
Do you have any evidence for this? Or is this speculation sufficient proof for you?

Anything’s possible. I tend to get a little overly defensive because I get tired of fighting social perception of Catholicism/me. I don’t know how many times I’ve been backed into a corner and yelled at because of my beliefs. So if I was overly defensive I apologise. Just so long as I know that your intent wasn’t to insult us.
I made a similar mistake earlier. Someone insisted that we all have the same ‘moral compass’ (I paraphrase). I expressed that people have different beliefs, which are morally based, and used abortion as an example. The thread quickly went off to a discussion of abortion (which, while an important issue, was not really the point).
Perhaps I should use less glaring examples when trying to show that a belief is false (like the belief that the priests are good stewards of holiness).
I have also been backed into a corner a time or two, so I know that it is fairly easy to let the heat increase.

what is “self”

how do you know you exist?

how do you know anything?

maybe you are just dreaming this all?

what are dreams?

what is what?

what is “is”?

what year is it?

what makes a year?

This is the type of nonsense that so-called athiests put forward in order to not ever have to answer anything directly, and therefore not show that they actually believe in something. The best way to keep something at arms length is to criticize it. This is exactly what persons who think they are somehow athiests do to stay from reality, even though they know it exists.

Well, Phooney, I will admit that I find your posts rather daunting at times, for their sheer length. They can appear very verbose - but quite thoughtful and intelligent verbosity, I might add. I will try to spend more time analyzing them and responding.

You definitely are getting your bang for your buck on your character limit! 🙂
Again, I don’t mean them to be daunting or difficult to follow. The verbosity (or “wordiness” as my microsoft paperclip tells me) is there only to attempt to deflect upcoming arguments that I feel I have dealt with before, and save myself, and all involved, reading time in the long term, as well as trying to be as complete as my study allows.

I want to make it clear to everybody that I am not a scientific authority and most of the things that I’ve written is based purely on the evidence that I’ve read about rather than the scientific experiments that I have personally conducted. If there’s something I’ve written that doesn’t mesh with current scientific thought, call me out on it. If I’ve overstated what the evidence tells us, call me out on it. If, despite my verbosity, I’ve not been clear enough on a point or my sources, ask me. I don’t expect anybody to merely accept what I say, feel free to read authoritative arguments on both sides of the issue, but don’t just try to tell me that the big bang is refuted “lolomgwtf” and say newton is the ultimate authority of modern physics, for example and have me or an unbiassed observer (if there is such a thing) take you seriously.

In my debates with deists, I have been able to come to understandings, I hope to do the same with theists and that much of our differences might have something to do with merely definitions.

Also, for anybody who hasn’t done so already, read my new signature. 🙂

Don’t look for a reply from me. I’m not qualified in this area of what makes something exist verses hallucinatory. I’m not a hundred percent sure what you’re referring to, but chances are good It’s not my area. Can’t speak for the others though.

Also I find long posts hard to read sometimes. so if it was a long multi post, chances are good I haven’t read it.
I have recently enjoyed a 22 minute video on perception. It was an eye-opener (not to mention a mind-opener) for me. If you think you will enjoy it, here it is.

Ah ha, that’s your secret!

You’re making me laugh here! All that hard work gone in one fell swoop! I would really like to meet Mr. Smith. He seems like a really colorful character. (And I do mean that, c659smith! 🙂 In a good way.)
By the way, I have had a few beers tonight so I am just in ‘chat’ mode, and I just want to warn people not to expect any particularly noteworthy responses from me until tomorrow.
Hmmmm, depending on how many beers you end up having, do you think you will even be up to it tomorrow?..

So the Lay person should absolutely know if their actions are wrong. If anything suggests otherwise they should probably seek advice from another priest.

And like I said before, I don’t see preachers/priests as different from any lay person…
Tragically, many of these men only used their influence on people they were sure could not do this (kids). The point is really that there is no reason to trust priests over any other group.
They relate what the bible really means for the masses. Oh, they also pass the collection plate.
See the connection that I find so sinister?

The priests who act in that way, yes. Not the majority of the priests and other Catholics. I am in no way defending the preists who acted in horrible ways. I am merely pointing out that we are all human and that these few do not represent the majority of us. And the collection plate is only to keep the church functioning. Besides most of the extra $ goes to help the poor and needy. Catholics are among the best if not *the * best in terms of almsgiving. I know, I work for a Church. This is not to say some Parishs’ misuse their funds. They too are acting in an inappropriate and sinful way. But you can’t generalize these actions to all Catholics, or even the majority. You shouldn’t trust a priest who is not acting in a holy manner just as you shouldn’t trust an athiest acting in a immoral fashion.

It was asked of me why I distrust the church so much, so I pointed out the corruption that is so obvious that everyone knows it. I also asked why anyone would expect better than this (clearly fallible) in the higher echelons.

That is IT! I am going to sneak a sip from my Sweethearts flask (she got it as a gift) and chase it with a Big Rock Beer!

My posts should perforce decline.

It counts as a story, but no more.
There are many contemperary stories of miraculous healers. There is no well-documented case of an amputee being healed (meaning having his missing limb replaced).
