Is It a Grave Sin to Vote Democrat?

Follow your conscience and always choose the lesser evil. If someone would promote gay marriage it’s still better to vote for him than for Stalin or Hitler.

This video is about the US 2016 election, but I think it applies to any other election too. I really admire Archbishop Sample.

I am much the same way. While I am a registered Republican I do not see myself ever voting for a Democratic candidate for federal office or for a high level state office in my state. Not with this current Democratic party’s goals and ambitions.

I could have seen myself voting for someone like JFK (had I been old enough). The pro-life issue is a big one for me. I could never make myself vote for a pro-choice candidate no matter what. What the Democratic party stands for goes against so much of Christian morals & values, especially Catholic Christian, I would feel so much shame going before God if I had supported that party.

I know the Republican party is not perfect, I know they have their flaws also, I know there are Republican members in government who support abortion but the party as a whole has not taken on the pro-abortion stance that the Democrats have.

Yes we will have the “whatabout?” posters who will try to justify their position with calling out Trump on some comment or issue of the past. I do not like all of Trump’s past behaviors, I do not care for some of his comments, (and they are not the ones the liberal media has twisted to suit their headline of the day), however, I repentance in Trump for his past behavior, something I don’t believe most Democrats are capable of.

To all of you who will mock me for this post…remember, that says much more about your character than mine.

How can it be changed? When the party loses time and time again because it stands for baby deaths. The answer isn’t to get more pro abolition confederates the answer is to defeat the position.

That is the relativistic thinking that has crept into the Church. “Forget about those dead babies. That’s a mother’s right. Look what we are doing for the poor!” On a spiritual level, what does the devil do? He diverts from the truth.

And then many of these social justice warriors fail to preach the Gospel to them. This risks, as Saint Thomas Aquinas thought, a temporal comforting of those on the road to hell. Some compassion there…but it does make one feel good.

We are allowed to vote to limit evil - but the death of the unborn cannot be outweighed by any good we do. It cannot be accepted as part of any political package. There are absolutes and this is one of them.

In our tragic age, relativism and self-satisfaction seek an outlet through allowing politics to inform their faith. No! Our faith must inform all things.

Hah. Too often it’s the same people - - the ones promoting gay marriage are the most like Stalin. You should know that Kullervo!
Also, it appears that you did not post a video.

I am reminded of the quote by former radical David Horowitz:
“Inside of every progressive is a totalitarian screaming to get out”

I’ll be honest; the more serious about the faith that I have gotten the less I’ve been able to vote for either party.

Totalitarianism is not a left or right issue. You can be a totalitarian and be either left or right wing politically.

I do not hold to that. It strikes me as relativistic - it is what we have been fed during our “education.”

IMO , it runs from totalitarianism at one extreme (left or right is immaterial) to libertarianism on the other. Both have “some” good but both demand or allow for evil.

There is a reason that politics and poison begin with the same letter.

You have confused two spectrums. If you were to plot them on a graph: Left and right wing politics would be the x-axis while totalitarianism and libertarianism would be the y-axis.

I’m sure you have met libertarians who are conservative and those who are liberal. So, too, for totalitarianism.

While I see where you are coming from, I look at voting differently. I look at voting in terms of Matthew 22:21.
Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.
Voting is a duty I’ll give to “Caesar”.

What would happen if you add to that the drop in revenue the government to would experience as a result of the loss of businesses and jobs that accompany things like cutting the defense spending in half, bringing all troop home from abroad, and the sudden loss of subsidies to corporations?
A few points, and then I’m done here, as arguing about the politics isn’t the point of the thread:
  1. I have severe ethical issues with the notion that the health of any business in any way can be weighted against a human life; 2) the US spends more on military than any other nation, if we cut our spending in half we will still be spending more than any other nation–there is no moral or fiscal justification for this when people here die due to lack of healthcare; 3) according to international law, much of what our government does abroad is illegal; 4) corporations that are profitable by definition do not need subsidies, but many still get them, especially oil companies.
To this day, fiscal conservatives lament the ballooning of the national debt that resulted from this war we could not afford.
Then I commend those fiscal conservatives for that. I am glad to know there are exceptions. I hope they would join with me in calling for an end to the endless, unjustified, immoral, unconstitutional, and illegal wars.

Lofty goals, which, I’m afraid, would take several lifetimes to fulfill.
I am not so naive as to believe that my goals are achievable in my lifetime! It is my hope, however, that I can be a small part in making the lives of the poor here and those in the countries we’ve harmed better.

Social issues can be fought on the cultural and personal levels. Systemic economic issues cannot.

You may wish to read the directives of our Holy Bishops on these matters. They give clear, well reasoned, guidance.

I can tell you are very passionate about this. I commend you for being engaged in these issues. So many Americans are not.

My only point is that there will be a massive impact on our economy if we were to implement the cuts you suggest, and that has to be accounted for no matter our motives for doing so.

From our Bishops:

36. When all candidates hold a position that promotes an intrinsically evil act, the
conscientious voter faces a dilemma. The voter may decide to take the extraordinary step of not
voting for any candidate or, after careful deliberation, may decide to vote for the candidate
deemed less likely to advance such a morally flawed position and more likely to pursue other
authentic human goods

I’m not speaking for others, for ‘ME’ it’s a grave, mortal, sin to vote for anyone who supports any evil that offends God…regardless of party. I will vote for nobody before I vote for the lesser of 2 evils.
