Is it discriminatory that Airlines only allow pretty flight attendants?

Denying someone employment because you don’t think they’re hot enough is not. I don’t know why you would think to equate the two.
In reality that is not the process for hiring flight attendants; so you are simplifying the issue. But when 100 qualified people apply for 1 job, 99 are going to be denied employment for one reason or another. So I suppose that in a field where women are competing against other women, the more attractive one has an edge?

Seems weird that the more attractive men don’t seem to have this?

You seem very okay with that. Would you be just as okay if employers were turning away less attractive men in a male-dominated profession where looks are functionally irrelevant?

Actually, I don’t see this as a problem. If a man looks like Gilbert Gottfried or Woody Allen, he’s going to have a hard time getting a job as a bouncer or body guard, no matter how skilled he might be in martial arts or as a sharp shooter.

I’m just telling you like it is; like I said; even you discriminate between an ugly slob and an attractive person, so why the double-standard? There are many qualities that people find attractive. I suppose if they are hiring men for a public role, of the two qualified candidates the more handsome taller one will have an edge?

Why are you assuming automatic overlap? Not all slobs are ugly, and not all unattractive people are slobs.

If he’s legitimately more qualified, that’s fine. If the less attractive candidate is more qualified but still gets passed over, that’s a problem.

It is no secret that female flight attendants have traditionally been very pretty and I don’t think that is just mere coincidence.
Flight attendances of either gender are held to a high standard of grooming, with a dress code that encompasses more than just the uniform. Poise, posture, attitude, hair, cosmetics, jewelry, nails, it all falls under some part of the rules.

People who are well groomed, have poise, posture and a professional attitude ARE more attractive. Someone over age 7 who simply tumbles out of bed and needs no grooming to be attractive is a myth.

Slobs are slobs; would you hire a slob for the role of a flight attendant?
We’re not talking about slobs. We’re talking about people whose are not conventionally attractive.

So “ugly” women make people feel anxious and nervous lol?
After a point, and when the person is a stranger, yes.

I have a very disfiguring medical condition. It cannot be masked with cosmetics nor corrected with surgery. I have faced discrimination in hiring, in restaurants, in stores, you name it. It is simply part of the air I breathe.

Have had job phone interviews (in a very professional, “cool” tech field where diversity is celebrated) where the in person interview is “just a formality”. After that interview, I am never contacted again. Not a phone call, not an email. They ghost me.

When I was in my 20’s I entered a local beauty contest. The preliminary rounds were based on photographs, essay, talent (back in the days of pre-digital, we could submit a cassette recording of singing so that is what I did). I was the 2nd runner up at the LIVE finals. When I walked across the stage, you could hear a pin drop. Taught me a life lesson that I will never forget.

There are things I simply do not do because my appearance will make the other people uncomfortable. I rarely attend funerals unless I know the persons extended family. Same for weddings. I do not lector/read at Mass, the attention would be on ME and not the readings.

Yeah, we who know our appearance cross a line, we know how to be considerate of others. And before people reply with “I do not see others that way”, I will tell you, you do. We see it in your eyes. Some recover more quickly than others, but, everyone reacts - except people with Autism or Downs. They never react in the least.

I think you’re overestimating the shallowness of the general populace.
I think you’re missing the obvious; beauty has a subliminal effect. Everyone naturally loves beauty. I don’t mean to pry, but… we’re you recently passed over for a job? If so I’m sorry 😦

Since the advent of televised debates, until our past election, the man elected President of the United States has been a handsome man. Now we even see the primaries, the male candidates look like a GQ ad. This last time neither candidate was considered attractive, so, it ended the trend that began with the Nixon sweating debate.

… I think we two have very different ideas on “handsome”.

And now admittedly I’m Australian so I don’t watch the US presidents much but now I’m flicking through photos. Obama seems okay. Bush though? Not really a great look. Nor Clinton. Raegan was certainly past his prime though I understand he was pretty in his youth. Carter’s alright? Ford, Nixon and Johnson not so much.
