JonNC . . .
I doubt dvdjs would support this
I doubt it too. (But I’ll wait to hear it from dvdjs himself. This is a pretty easy question. It seems nobody would advocate this. I am surprised Harris is blind enough to do so.)

Then the next question would be, can you support Kamala Harris while she is carrying in these ideas into the 2020 campaign?

And if the answer is “no” now is a good chance to distance yourself from her with these ideas.

Because it is much more important what Kamala Harris thinks (in her position of power), than what Cathoholic, or JonNC, or dvdjs thinks here on this.

(Never-the-less, not ONE leftist here has distanced themselves from her racist idea).

And you are absolutely right JonNC. This idea of taking wealth from innocent people based upon the color of their skin . . . .

. . . . and abusing the POWER of Government (ultimately by gunpoint) giving it to other people based upon the color of their skin . . .

. . . IS racist.

Do YOU think it is appropriate to tax an innocent person MORE based upon the color of their skin?
Consider a similar question. If an innocent person inherits a vintage Stutz Bearcat from a distant uncle, but later it is revealed that the uncle stole the car, do you think it is appropriate that the innocent person should have to surrender the car?

So LeafByNiggle, may I assume you SUPPORT . . .

. . . is OK?

Or do you not? (But you think "being a “distant uncle” is equivalent to “the color of people’s skin”?)

One step at a time, please. My example was only meant to address the “innocent” aspect of your question. So I have established that it is sometimes appropriate to take from an innocent person something of value that they thought belonged to them.

Now on to the next step - the color of the skin, which my example did not address. But if we are to address that, we have to look at how the color of the skin has already given the vast majority of white people a comparative advantage over former slaves. Did you know that in the 1860s, the largest single economic asset in the United States, North or South, more than all the industry, more than all the real-estate, more than all the gold, or whatever other economic asset there might be, was slaves? In today’s dollars I heard it would be something like 90 billion dollars. That is a lot of wealth to have been extracted from one group and given to another group, only because of the color of their skin. But now we are supposed to simply reset the game and say “OK, now we are starting our accounting from scratch.” The continuing legacy of that racial divide can be proven by many different statistical measures. I have yet to hear of any alternate explanation of those statistics other than that it is a legacy of slavery. Since the legacy remains, it cries out for correction. I admit that reparations of any sort is a very problematic means of correction of that legacy, but I am still waiting to hear a better one.

Let me know if you locate any former slaves.

There were lots of whites who had no advantage over former slaves. My ancestors did not.
The whites who died in the Civil War had no advantage over former slaves.
I would contend that any assumption that a white person had an advantage because they are white is, by definition, racist.
Did you know that in the 1860s, the largest single economic asset in the United States, North or South, more than all the industry, more than all the real-estate, more than all the gold, or whatever other economic asset there might be, was slaves?
My ancestors were not here yet, held no slaves.
Virtually all slavery owners were Democrats. Some were not white. The relatively small number of people who owned slaves benefited.
In today’s dollars I heard it would be something like 90 billion dollars. That is a lot of wealth to have been extracted from one group and given to another group, only because of the color of their skin.
That wealth was transferred to slave owners, not to white people as a group.

It is 55 years since the 64 civil rights act. That act took place 100 years after the war. It is unreasonable to blame slavery for disparate income levels today. It is more likely the fault of the Great Society programs that effectively destroyed the American black family and is now working on white families.
If you want to find the real cause of disparate income levels, look to 1968, not 1850.

So LeafByNiggle, it looks like I CAN see you as being SUPPORTIVE of . . .
This idea of taking wealth from innocent people based upon the color of their skin . . . .

(I hope I am getting this wrong LeafByNiggle and you will just straighten out my misconceptions here.)

Have you? In your hypothetical the innocent person inherited a stolen vehicle. The “something of value” was obtained through illegal means. If slavery was legal until 1865 why would an innocent person have to forfeit anything of value they might have inherited?

Many sacrificed their lives to gain freedom for slaves. Maybe they deserve reparation too. Also, a number of people have ancestry on both sides of the war, we’d almost have to start assigning it by genealogy.

Let me know if you locate any former slaves.
Let me know why the median net worth of black families is 10% of the median net worth of white families, if things are so equal and fair.
I would contend that any assumption that a white person had an advantage because they are white is, by definition, racist.
No, it is just mathematically statistically true. Mathematical truth cannot be racist.
Virtually all slavery owners were Democrats.
Yet today Democrats do not have a higher median net worth than Republicans, like the whites do over the blacks.
Some were not white.
Statistics are not contradicted by individual examples.
The relatively small number of people who owned slaves benefited.
No, the entire white society benefited.
That wealth was transferred to slave owners, not to white people as a group.
Statistics say otherwise.
It is more likely the fault of the Great Society programs that effectively destroyed the American black family and is now working on white families.
Oh, you mean blacks and whites had equal median net worth in 1968? I don’t think so.

You are assuming that just because slavery was legal that it was also moral.

Citing examples of other people who suffered is not an argument against correcting an imbalance where we can.
I don’t think anyone made that argument. I just said, perhaps they deserve reparations as well by the same logic.

Maybe this is being suggested by folks at 23 n me or some such DNA testing facility to promote the use of their products??? It could be a big money maker…

It I safe to say someone in every family line stolen something if you go back far enough. No thanks. I am not responsible for my great great great great great uncle, thrice removed.

I never made that assumption. But if being legal but immoral is a criteria for deserving reparations, black Americans would have an excellent case against Planned Parenthood.

BlackGenocide.org | Abortion and the Black Community
As I said, citing other cases of needed reparation is not an argument against this instance.
It I safe to say someone in every family line stolen something if you go back far enough. No thanks. I am not responsible for my great great great great great uncle, thrice removed.
Then how do you explain the continuing state of wealth discrepancy where black families have 10% of the median net worth of white families, if not for the fact that the advantage whites had way back when remains to this day?

Maybe you are right. So what?

You don’t think that reparations have already been paid over and over again?

So many government programs to help African Americans; .e.g., Affirmative Action.

Schools integrated–a good thing, but sadly, it doesn’t seem to have helped. In our city (150,000 people), 50% of African American young men drop out of high school

Housing projects have been built with taxpayer money, but they have only served as a breeding grounds for crime and drug addiction, and have isolated people from neighbors. Most of the high-rises in Chicago have been torn down and now they are being replaced by single family homes. Some of these home are being built with taxpayer money and some by various groups like Habitat for Humanity.

So many other privately-run programs–Boys and Girls Clubs, Teen Challenge, various school programs designed to help disadvantaged children catch up, free admission into most of the Park District programs (including the museums, all the sports venues like golf and ice skating, and the camps), all kinds of church programs and youth groups and children’s ministries (all free)–

–so WHY do we still see 50% dropout rate among African American young men?! Why?!

Here’s my idea–eliminate all government programs and instead give everyone who has at least a small part (1/16) of African American ancestry one million dollars when they turn 18 years old as a reparation for the evils of slavery which their race endured (even if they aren’t direct ancestors of a slave, they are still part of the oppressed race that was subjected to horrific racism and dehumanizing reconstruction and lynchings and denial of their very humanity.

They can do whatever they like with it–spend it on a post high-school education, invest it in a business, buy a house in a good neighborhood–or have a really good time for a few years until the money is gone.

But nothing else–no more “freebies” from the government. No more programs.

I think this would be a much better way to help the African Americans than continuing to come up with government programs that don’t seem to be helping more than a small number of people. I suspect that businesses (run by African Americans) would spring up to help African Americans make wise use of their million dollars, and I think that within a generation, most African Americans would be self-supporting, successful in their chosen careers or callings, and fully-accepted as equals by most other people in the U.S… A million dollars would go a long ways towards putting them on an equal footing with Americans who have never suffered from systemic and legal racism.

And I think that it would be cheaper than maintaining the vast bureaucracy of programs that seem to help only a few.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) said in an interview Monday she supports “some type of” reparations to black Americans for slavery. . . .
Well she is free to donate her money to this cause. If she has not already donated, perhaps she should consider donating a modest amount of say $10,000. In this way she would be a good example for the rest of us.

Please answer your own question: why do we continue to see high dropout rates among African-American men?
