You don’t think that reparations have already been paid over and over again?

So many government programs to help African Americans; .e.g., Affirmative Action.
The results (or lack of them) speak for themselves.
Housing projects have been built with taxpayer money, but they have only served as a breeding grounds for crime and drug addiction, and have isolated people from neighbors.
What do you conclude from this? Does it bear on the question at hand?
–so WHY do we still see 50% dropout rate among African American young men?! Why?!

Here’s my idea–eliminate all government programs and instead give…
That’s another government program. Why do you think yours would be any more effective or fair or even feasible than other programs? And by the way, I would like to hear your answer to the question you raised above. (@gracepoole asked for that too, I see.)

We are obligated to answer questions we ask? Kinda defeats the purpose of this forum.

Not having any answer to this particular question kinda defeats the purpose of using it in an argument to make a point. If, however, the question was an off-the-wall non-sequitur to the issue of reparations, then I guess we can all ignore it.

Sometimes questions aren’t really questions. Sometimes they’re asked with a very specific answer already in mind.

And here I was thinking that individuals were responsible for their individual crimes. Who knew that an entire group of people could be condemned for the color of their skin. Almost sounds…racist.

Last I heard, over 300,000 men in slaveholding states we killed in a civil war that they lost, their major cities were burned or shelled to the ground, the slaveholders had their property seized and partitioned and the states were operated by military governorship for years. Seems like they paid for it and then some. I fail to see how anyone alive 160yrs later had any hand in slavery. Unless you want to talk sex slavery, in which case you might want to look closer to Nevada, California, and your big urban cities.

Thanks for posting this Victoria33.

“Who’da thunk it”?

Marco Rubio has more Native American than Elizabeth Warren. (From CNN - “Estimates that Warren possesses from 1/64th to 1/1024th Native American heritage – and those from people who were on Warren’s side! – didn’t help matters.” Link below.)

Maybe you people that favor this kind of wealth re-disribution based upon race and color of skin, will now begin sending checks to Senator Rubio.

Why wait for Government, when it is the “right thing to do” and “concern” and “charity” and all of that?

And if we find out President Trump has a genetic surprise or two,
you guys can start sending President Trump your money too!

Oh by the way. Speaking of Marco Rubio and Elizabeth Warren, has anybody tried any of “Elizabeth Warren’s” recipes yet from the book partially ah hem
“authored” by Warren, Pow Wow Chow?
(For those interested, you can get your copy of Pow Wow Chow here.)

Even CNN got it right on this. . . .

The South was sufficiently damaged if not destroyed that there was very very little living for the newly freed blacks. Most of whom became sharecroppers for whom making a living was a desperately hard life. So when the North began to industrialize, they had jobs and millions of blacks migrated north to take jobs in the factories. This is how we got sizable black populations in many northern cities like Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, Gary, Toledo and many more.

As of the 1940 census, black adults actually had a higher rate of marriage than white adults. The churches were the centers of their communities. Well that’s all gone now, we can thank the social spending programs that broke up their families and their communities and have been breaking up families of other ethnic groups as well.

I won’t answer for him, but here’s a vignette from one teacher who taught at inner city schools for several years. It’s pretty tough reading.

Let me know why the median net worth of black families is 10% of the median net worth of white families, if things are so equal and fair.
I did. Couple the Democrat policies leading up to the Civil Rights Acts with the decline of the black family because of the Great Society programs.

Yet today Democrats do not have a higher median net worth than Republicans, like the whites do over the blacks.
That’s because slavery ended over 160 years ago.
Do all whites have a higher median worth than all blacks? Or is it related to many factors?
Destruction of the black family has more to do with this problem than slavery.
Statistics are not contradicted by individual examples
But racism is. As I said before, to hold a group of people responsible for the actions of others who happen to have the same immutable characteristic is, by definition, racist.
The crime rate amongst blacks in Chicago is high. That isn’t because they are black, and other blacks, certainly not blacks if 5 or 6 generations hence, are not responsible.
No, the entire white society benefited.
Proof, please. How did poor whites in Appalachia, for example benefit from slavery? How did the dead whites at Civil War benefit from slavery?
Oh, you mean blacks and whites had equal median net worth in 1968? I don’t think so.
No. I mean blacks were making significant strides into the 1960’s, overcoming the Democrats’ racism. That momentum ends as the black family declines as a result of, not surprisingly, Democrat policies.

In short:
I am not responsible for anyone’s poverty. I am not responsible for slavery, or discrimination. I have no particular privilege due to my immutable characteristics. And the very claim that I do is, by definition, a racist claim.

I do not know.

I’ve heard various reasons given:
  1. Lack of a father in the home, or a male role model
  2. Addictions
  3. The lure of selling drugs and doing other “jobs” for gangs (we are close to Chicago)
  4. Parents who can’t read and therefore don’t read to their children
  5. Parents who are addicted or mentally ill and regularly (once a week or more) do not get young children to school or to the bus stop on time.
  6. Lack of personal involvement with a faith community
  7. Failure to identify with primarily white, female teachers
I don’t know if these are the true reasons or not. There are plenty of jobs in our city right now, but they require a high school diploma at a minimum.

All of our schools provide free breakfasts and lunches to ALL students (not just low-income students), and all of our schools will pay the fees for low-income students.

Sometimes I wonder if the “freebies” contribute to dropout rates, because it might make children/teens thinks that they can get stuff for free (food stamps, free housing, bus tickets, park district recreation, clothing, Christmas gifts for kids, health care, etc.), so why go to school? I wonder that myself sometimes–why do I work my butt off and still owe too much, while others get it all for free?

I know you think the Great Society programs were ineffective at what they were intended to do, and I tend to agree. But there is no evidence that giving people money makes them poorer.

Statistics are about aggregations, not individuals.

It is more than just slavery per se. It is also the discrimination the resulted from the attitude formed by nearly a century of slavery.

Please look up the definition of “racist” before using the word with such abandon.
The crime rate amongst blacks in Chicago is high. That isn’t because they are black…
No, it is because they are poor and underemployed and crowded - all legacies of the same attitude.
No, the entire white society benefited.

Statistics are based on an aggregation, not individuals or even select sub-groups. Those statistics are the proof that whites in general benefited.

(Just as an aside, and not germane to my argument, but it is interesting to note that while you refuse to accept that today’s whites are responsible for what 19th century whites did, you do accept and promote the idea that today’s Democrats are responsible for what 19th century Democrats did.)
That momentum ends as the black family declines as a result of, not surprisingly, Democrat policies.
I would say “in spite of Democratic policies.”
I have no particular privilege due to my immutable characteristics.
Statistically, you do.

Yes, these are all very good reasons. But they do not explain why these things happen more to blacks than to whites. As I see it, you have two choices:
  1. These things are all the result of the legacy of slavery and the ensuing discrimination, or
  2. These things are inherently more likely to be a problem for blacks because they are racially inferior to whites.

  1. Legacy of the Great Society. That’s very clear and I thought spelled out in the answers already.

Read through these Great Society programs and tell me which ones specifically targeted blacks for oppression?

No one said that.

Facts are, things got worse after the Great Society, out-of-wedlock births and so on.

Now, in the past year, a program has been established to help areas in need, hopefully, that works. The story was posted in world news.

Not necessarily (but kinda); rhetorically, couldn’t policies be amended and programs enacted to help communities and folks who are disadvantaged and struggling? Like hypothetically, the Congress with the collaboration of the President and the Executive Branch could implement a set of policies and programs to address and amend systemic issues that contributed to communities to become disadvantaged and struggling. Forgive me for sounding quite vague about it.
No blame for being vague because the government has tried just about every specific program that could be imagined, from AFDC to Affirmative Action, to Enterprise Zones.

Ultimately, it’s not unlikely that the slow attrition of blacks from horrible neighborhoods into better ones, better jobs, etc, is the only answer. Some other groups have simply done it more quickly.
