I know this is dreaming but do you think things could have turned out better if “forty acres and a mule” and Reconstruction as a whole was more successful (for example, the Freedman’s Bureau was given ample funding and lasted well onto the 1900’s)? Additionally, how would you respond to arguments that racial injustice continues.

I don’t know if “forty acres and a mule” would have had a better result if it wasn’t a lie. Perhaps simply aiding their movement west would have done more. Shortly after the Civil War there were black towns established on homestead land in Kansas, not too far from here. So it wasn’t as if there was no “free land” anywhere.

But the free land was gone by the time my great grandfather got here from Italy. Italians were so far down on the totem pole, the only work he could get was in the deep mines where it was so hot the men worked naked and there was no safety equipment at all. There were blacks in that place, but they wouldn’t take that mine work because it was so dangerous and unrewarding. They could get better jobs than Italians could.

So, earlier on, I don’t know that the addition of a mule would have added much in the way of value to 640 acres of absolutely free land, which is what a homesteader could claim.

To one who made a general claim that racial injustice continues, I would ask him to tell me where and how it is happening with specificity and with sound authority. I have met and seen too many black executives, bankers, managers to accept it without really good proof. And I have further seen too many Mexican success stories to think “racism” is pervasive.

The link in your post seems awfully taken with the idea that “whites” will be a minority in 2050 and will therefore lose “white privilege”. Maybe in the east or somewhere “white privilege” exists. But I think people who are eagerly anticipating whites being oppressed by “people of color” thirty years from now ought to watch ten hours of Mexican soap operas. They don’t really think of all that in the same way “Anglo” liberals do. And I frankly doubt Central Americans (with whom I’m less familiar) do either.

Did you read it? Why don’t you see it as something telling the other side of the story or a persepctive about why things are the way they are? Something more people could read to bridge better understanding and empathy? For example, what about parcels from the text. I understand a lot of the text is accusatory but perhaps the person is sincerely conveying her perspective from her own eyes (granted she’s white but had a multiracial family (she says this somewhere else in her profile)?
The effects of red-lining to keep black people from owning homes of their own, comprise the other major reason for racism in America today. Those who were able to buy those houses, used them as the foundation of their families’ wealth. As time went on, the house could be used as collateral for a loan to do something like start a business, buy a car, or put a child through college. Black people, who did not get their houses, had to keep on renting, and to have no resources for increasing their position in the world. No home ownership, no family business or college education. Just continued renting, and nothing to show for it.

The reason that minorities continue to be angry and to express hatred of white people, is that the things white people have done to harm them, STILL CONTINUE. Things are not getting better for minorities. Opportunity has not come to be more just; American policies have not become more fair.

Of course I read it.

I realize it’s now popular to attribute black poverty and lack of success to lacking wealth. This lady then attributes that to red lining. That’s the dark version of the bogus realtor’s argument that buying a home is an “investment”. It’s not. It’s a consumer good. I have dealt with real estate for decades and while real estate certainly can be an “investment”, one’s own home usually isn’t.

One of these times, someone will come up with yet another theory. Meanwhile, redlining has been illegal for nearly fifty years. And it is enforced.

her last paragraph is revealing. She’s justifying (unfortunately encouraging the young to harbor) racial hatred based on her own racism. And anybody who has, nowadays, dealt with his black banker or insurance agent, or plant manager or lawyer knows better. My dentist is a black woman. Do you think she lives in a ghetto and can’t buy a house? I think I can assure you that’s not the case.

Maybe Harris will float the idea of “reparations” based on ethnicity now too (just joking. But I would have thought redistribution of wealth based on skin color would have been unthinkable a few years ago.
Now politicians [like Harris] are actually openly favoring this kind of thing).

I was thinking that maybe this information age has changed democracy. Now, we go beyond slogans and a few key speeches of a handful of people. It is easier for someone to arise out of nowhere with ideas that are farther outside the norm of regular politics. This reparations idea coming from a sitting senator seems unthinkable a generation ago. Reparations was exclusive to crackpot extremists.

Personally, I support training in history for anyone who thinks this is a good idea.

Are you really trying to spin “some type of reparations” into “redistribution of wealth based on skin color”?
Why not just stick to what the Senator actually said?

And what’s to prevent reparations from becoming that? At what point does it end? And why should tax payers pay for this? My ancestors didn’t own slaves, it would be wrong to say that I have to pay some form of reparations for something my ancestors had no hand in
 
That was not the question. My question was; what prevents reparations from becoming that? Please stick to what was asked, thank you.
