I have to wear it. I wish I did not need to. I even wear some when I am just at home. I read somewhere that we put our best self forward for the world and show our family (the ones we love most) a frumpy and “worst” side. I was doing just that. So now, I try to look a little nicer for my family. The make-up evens my skin tone, hides blemishes, and acne scars, so there is no denying that it makes me look different…better. Anyone, that knows me, knows that I am far from vain. But I will make the effort to look presentable…most of the time…after all, “my body is God’s temple; for His Spirit dwells in me” and if I can keep it from not looking too shabby, I think I should.

Ok… want to know a great way to test your true colours as to why you wear makeup or nice clothes? Join an 18th century Am. Rev. War reenactment group, wear the frumpiest, layer-on-layer clothing to make you look 10-15 lbs heavier than you actually are, allow yourself to be dirty, smelly, sweaty, don’t wear makeup and walk around out in the open not caring how bad you look. Do it over and over again, still not caring how you look in public with tons of people taking pics of you, knowing that you’ll be in some person’s photo album all over the country and across the world. 😃 If you can totally do this, you know that you aren’t too vain in regular everyday, modern life. 😛

This is me as a camp wench. I’m the girl on the right in first pic and the girl in the middle in the second pic. Sad thing is, it takes me twice as long to get dressed in this getup because I have to wear so many layers of clothing and wear a pair of stays (corsette) which I have to lace, tighten and tie behind me by myself. It’s an entire process.

Sorry to be dense, but I don’t follow you … what bothers you? Saying that a good husband is a blessing? Or something else? 🙂
Sorry - I didn’t mean to be cryptic. :o What I mean is that it kinda makes it seem like it’s a bonus that a husband accepts her as “pretty enough” without paint whereas IMO that should be a given in a good husband.

I suppose I’m a bit “sensitive” because I’ve been told often I’m “lucky” with respect to a number of my husband’s attitudes, but I wasn’t - I was “choosy” and would not have married a man with different attitudes on showstopper issues. In that sense it is not something I am obligated to be “grateful” for. That doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate or value it but it’s not a matter of being “lucky” in something I had no control over where I just had to take whatever life handed me and thank my lucky stars it worked out, sort of thing.

I still don’t think I’m explaining myself very well. :o

I wear lipstick every day… If I don’t my husband protests. I look 'too pale 'without it, he consistently asserts…

I also find it very sad when a husband only finds his wife pretty if she is wearing makeup.

Also, no perfume. First off, I have asthma. One of my triggers is scents. I also find that it draws too much attention to the wearer.

I think a lot of men “say” that they prefer a “natural look,” but they honestly have no clue about makeup. When they see an attractive woman with the “natural look,” they don’t necessarily realize that she has a LOT of makeup on to achieve that “natural” look! So they THINK that they prefer “natural” when in reality, they prefer makeup that LOOKS natural.

**A woman who really knows how to apply makeup will look completely natural. **

My younger daughter wears a whole bag of makeup even during the day. But you probably would never know it. All she does is enhance her own features with skillful use of makeup. The only way you would know that she is wearing makeup is to see her WITHOUT it sometime!

Yes I do - because if I did not, people at work will ask me if I am ‘under the weather’.

Also, it protects my fair skin from harmful UV rays. No really, that’s the reason…😉

Funny!!!

I bet I can say that I am one of the few ladies on these boards whose husband actually wears more makeup than she does…

Bet that got your attention! 😉 DH is a TV news anchor, and would look like a ghost under the lights if didn’t have his Max Factor pancake makeup at the ready.
I know what you mean. I was on TV a few times some years ago, and boy did they trowel the makeup on! And kept topping it up in the ad breaks, until I looked more garish than Ronald McDonald at the end of the day.

Then I saw the show broadcast - weeks later - and finally got it. The lights really do wash people out.

Hey, could be worse. My older sister also has very pale skin and Mum was forever telling her to put on some lipstick. One day she said it for the gazillionth time and sis just lost it because that time she already HAD lipstick on 😃 Hilarious.

So true. Two of my cousins work in the film and television business. They had invited me once to come on location for a television drama series they work on, just to see how everything worked behind the scenes. All the actors had foundation so caked on, that it looked like they weren’t real. I couldn’t get over how “natural” it looked when I saw the same actors on television.

😛 Hahah! What is it with moms always telling their daughters to put on some lipstick?!? I’m not even pale-skinned. Even when I wear a neutral color, she and my grandmother will harp on me to wear some.

This is so true. 👍

Yep, I agree. I do like shimmering blues and greens to wear for special outtings, with dh, I admit, I like playing with different ‘looks’ now and again (making smoky looking eyes is fun)…but, I think I apply my makeup very naturally…all you need to do is bring out your features. Too much makeup, applied wrong, wrong colors and so forth, will actually hide a woman’s features, and cause her to look…older.

But, nothing takes the place of exercising regularly…one’s face tends to glow when following a good diet, and exercising on a regular basis. I believe that because of exercise, I don’t find the need to wear foundation. I never really liked foundation–it clogs the pores of our skin. 😊 No amount of makeup can correct bad skin, if it’s caused from a poor diet and no exercise. (Oh and drink TONS of water!! Your skin will thank you) :o

Nothing is worse for a woman’s skin too, than SMOKING. If for no other reason to quit (if cancer isn’t enough to get you to stop) do it for your skin. My sister smokes, and she is very age-phobic, she is 53 years young, and she looks great, she exercises…but, she said she is starting to notice lines around her mouth …due to smoking. Yes, we will have wrinkles as we age, but women who smoke will speed up the aging process …ten fold.

While we’re on the topic, what skin creams do you guys use? I use Aveeno’s daily moisturizer…I love this stuff! 🙂 I like it too because it has a built in sunscreen, around 15 SPF.***

I wear make-up when I go out (I work from home), but I always keep it basic. I do wear body spray or perfume, as well.

There are days I don’t wear make-up, especially because I’m pregnant, and there are days I barely make it out of bed.

For my life, I wear make up to show that I care about the way I look, but I don’t use it in a showy way (I rarely wear mascara or eye liner, usually just a little color to brighten my face and even my complexion). I also wear make up to show Hubby that I care about how I look to him, too. I don’t want him to think that now that he’s got me I’m not going to care enough to try and impress him or make him happy, you know?

That said, I wasn’t allowed to wear make-up until I was in high school, which I think is reasonable. And even then, it was basically just lip gloss. If Hubby and I are blessed with a daughter in the future, the same rule will probably be true for her.

My husband does not like makeup on me.

Also, with me it is a vanity issue, because I noticed that when I went out with a group of ladies from the church who wear makeup, I wore makeup. But when I met with a group of ladies from church who don’t wear makeup, I didn’t wear makeup.

Also, for me, there is an honesty issue. The TRUTH is: “How I look without makeup is how I look.” Makeup covers up the truth. That’s its purpose. Now, you can cover up the truth about your looks out of love and consideration for others. I am not judging others. I am just saying that it nags at MY conscience in the truth department.

I have an age spot on my cheek. I have a birth mark under my ear. I have uneven skin tone. I have a scar through my eye-brow. These can all be concealed by makeup. But then, when you saw me you wouldn’t see ‘me’ the way I truely am. Flaws and all. I have good teeth and a beautiful smile that lights up my whole face, and eyes that glitter when I laugh, which is very often! I don’t need makeup.

I don’t wear makeup because my eyesight is so poor that I can’t put it on.

Also I am gifted with flawless skin, so I don’t need it.

And finally, I am over 60 and nobody is looking at me anyway.

I am sitting here, fascinated by what you posted (in a good way lol)…***

I also wear philosophy fragrances. I suffer from migraines. Scents like Channel, Juicy Couture and the other department store fragrances kill me. I was skeptical about ordering Amazing Grace, Pure Grace, Baby Grace, Falling in Love and Unconditional Love, but, when I tried each of them out, I was migraine free. I especially love Pure Grace shower cream. The other shower gels matching the fragrances are also excellent. I also use Ultimate Clean and Fresh Laundry by Clean. If you suffer from migraines, the Clean brand is just as good as philosophy.
I suffer from bad tension headaches and also migraines as well and perfume can be a trigger, along with cigerette smoke and other strong smells.

I’ve not heard of these fragrances before and will have to be sure to check them out. Thanks for this information.

I am sure they ARE looking at you and thinking, "I wish I had her flawless skin! I hope I look that good when I’m 50. " 😉

Amen sister! 👍

My husband is sitting here at the table across from me as I’m reading this thread. And you need to know that every day before I leave the house I put on: tinted moisturizer, blush, eye liner, mascara and a light lip color. Everyday. So I look up from the thread and say to my dear husband of 18 years… would you care if I decided I no longer wanted to wear makeup?

And he says with all seriousness, “You wear make up?”
