I should preface this by saying that I’ve spent the better part of the past 20 years in various Protestant churches, so my opinion probably doesn’t count. But I went to the Defending the Faith conference this summer in Steubenville, and the majority of songs they sang were the pop-rock worship songs that I’m getting at the Assembly of God church right now…
I was there to chaperone a group for one of the youth conferences a few months ago. I’m really starting to like some contemporary Christian music. But in Mass I prefer Gregorian chant or if that is not possible then some good old hymns.

But what I have noticed is that alot of the protestant or protestant influenced contemporary christian music that is increasingly used in Mass in various parishes is often much more theologically sound than the hymns used in the average parish.

I know what you mean!! Our Saturday night folks, God bless 'em, just aren’t that good and that’s the only Mass I can get to on the weekends. It doesn’t matter what they sing, it’s all painful. But, I’d be worse, I’m sure.
If the music is painful to listen to then try to offer it up. The suffering you are enduring might just be good for some time off of purgatory.

And add me to the list of people who would do much, much worse if I had to sing at Mass.

Some of the modern arrangements seem more geared toward giving the musician something interesting to play than they are giving the congregation something inspiring to sing.

We have a particular arrangemet of “Holy, Holy, Holy” (the Sanctus for the rest of us) that sounds like honky tonk piano. I bet it’s probably a hoot to play, but when I hear it I think of that line in the movie Amadeus when, after hearing one of Mozart’s operas the king says “too many notes”.

Between complex arrangements, unusual syncopation and keys way beyond most male voices, I usually just sit there and hum. Reverently, of course.

This is why I lip-sync.

Hmm lets see, Marty Haugen’s music is something I cringe at everytime I hear. Owen Alstott and Bernadette Farrell’s Gospel Acclamation is just terrible to sit through! And of all the worst I think “Taste and See” has to be my least favorite. That was actually the Communion hymn this past week!

Which “Taste and See”?

Stephen Dean? Christopher Walker? John Michael Talbot? Bob Hurd? James Moore Jr.? Rory Cooney? Marty Haugen? Timothy R. Smith? David Hurd? Christopher Willcock? Michel Guimont? Steve Angrisano?

“Taste and See” must be about the most popular title of the last 20 or so years.

(I’ve only heard the Bob Hurd, James Moore, and Marty Haugen versions myself. The last two are Gospel style and sound pretty awful if sung any other way, especially the Moore version.)

Oh wow there’s more than one version??? I had no idea!!! The version I heard was done gospel style. I didn’t happen to catch who wrote it though (they have the names of the people who write the songs printed in the program).

At this evening’s mass, we had a two-fer - “All Are Welcome” and “Sing a New Church” - and this parish is considered the most orthodox in the area - go figure! I’m not even Catholic yet, and these two bugged the heck out of me.

I don’t dislike any song in Mass…:hmmm: The only annoying thing is in the choir there’s a soloist and she always forgets the song and ends up improvising.:rotfl:

I think I discovered the winner at mass this morning. I’ve never heard this one before, and I hope I never have to hear it again…I don’t know the title, but If you’ve ever heard it, you’ll recognize it by the first verse alone…here goes…

Alle, Alle, Alleluia…
Alle, Alle, Alleluia…
Alle, Alle, Alleluia…
Alle-alle-alle-alle-alleluuuuuia
Alle-alle-alle-alle-alleluuuuuia

:dancing:

I tried so hard not to laugh. I really did. The tune just reminded me of some German drinking song. I can just imagine two people joining hands and spinning around t’ill the last “uuuiiia.” I know I’ve heard this tune somewhere before…any ideas? I honestly tried really really hard not to laugh. I’m weak. By the time this hymn came up it was just a culmination of absurdities at this mass.

I know, its called the “Caribbean Alleluia” the worst is when you have someone baaing away on a tambourine, another on drums, and a third clapping in a manner better suited for a square dance.

That sounds truly splendid I must say. I’m exploring different parishes in the area I moved to (the middle of rural no-where) and the indult is a LITTLE too far away to drive weekly (at least until gas prices go down). Part of me would prefer to hear it with tambourine, drums, and clapping as that would suit the music itself slightly better. Ours was on a full pipe-organ. It was just bizarre.

I discovered the power of OCP liturgical planning however today. They hadn’t changed the hymn board from last week at this church and it was hymn-for-hymn identical to the church I went to the previous week (INCLUDING City of God). I had no idea how much power it could wield. Its dangerous. :dancing:

(at least it gives me the ability of using the above smiley face which is BY FAR my most favorite of all of them).

BY THE WAY…Is the composer of the glorious Caribbean Alleluia the same composer of my favorite Lord’s Prayer setting? (Our Father…Our Father, Who art in Heaven…Who art in Heaven…Hallowed be thyHALLOWED by thy name).

The music at my parish can vary from mass to mass on the same day. I went to 12:15 mass yesterday. When we got there, the board still had the 10:30 hymns up. It was later removed. We ended up singing.

Come, Now is the Time to Worship
How Great is Our God
I am the Bread of Life (John Michael Talbot)
Lord I Lift Your Name On High

The 10:30 mass had some OCP stuff in it, as well as the type of music above.

Amazing Grace… it is used at almost every funeral Mass and it seems like every other Sunday Mass that I attend.

“Liturgy”
by Sister Mildred X. Bosch, C.S.X.B.R.

Come join in the song
Come join in the singing
Come join in the praise
Come join in the giving

The Mother of Earth
The Sister of life
The Virgin of Birth
The most cherished wife

Dance, shout,
That’s what this love’s about
Jeeeeeeeeesus
Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeesus
Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesus
Become real to us now
As we gaze on your face
On the most sacred altar
May we see our own faces
May we see our own faces

You win! Yikes! I hope I never hear the music… the lyrics are horrible enough.

The only thing more horrible is trying to imagine those lyrics with pipe organ accompaniment. :bigyikes:
