If the Island did cure Rose’s cancer and make it possible for Locke to walk, wouldn’t it cure Ben’s tumor? Or is it another “test”?

I was thinking the same thing. But if Ben was telling the truth that the Losties were on a different island than the Others, then this may explain why Ben isn’t cured.

Except that Ben spent a lot of time on the Losts’ island. Remember he said he was Henry Gale (quite a reference to the Wizard of Oz there with the balloon and all) and was captured and spent several days down the hatch?

Yet he doesn’t seem cured. He must still be having the symptoms Jack mentioned (tingling in the hands and so forth).

Could it be that the island only cures those who are “pure,” that is, in a state of grace? Remember the Others kidnapped Walt and the children from the Tailies. Perhaps they were trying to discover what it is about them that allows them to be cured.

Regarding the purgatory theory. What else would the producers say? “Yep, you guessed it, Purgatory.”

I have to add my 2 cents here. I apologize if I’m repeating anyone here, but that episode last week was completely out of character for Ecko. This is a man who did not speak a word to anyone for forty days as penance for killing two people in self-defense.

Did anyone else notice this inconsistency?

Probably not, but if were a correct theory I couldn’t see why they would categorically deny it either. At least keep people guessing.

Then with all the other things going on with the Dharma Initiative and the electro-magnetic experiments or whatever, I think there is more to it than Purgatory, or more earthly I should say.

Anyone notice the reference to Ascenion Day in tonight’s episode? In Kate’s flashback, when she calls the cop who was pursuing her, he says something like, “Today’s Ascenion Day. A lot of holy days have past since I last heard from you.”

Just saying, another Catholic reference.

What inconsistency?
If you’re referring to his speaking…
He killed two men.
Imposed his own penance.
Fulfilled it.
Then spoke from then on.

If you’re referring to his being repentent of killing those two men but not the others of his village…
in his village he was pretending to be a priest…
after he witnessed his brother give up his life for him…
because of the smuggling he was going to do he was angry.
He went to take care of his brother’s church when the gang guys tried to keep up the extortion.
He didn’t give in. He killed them instead…
but listen to what the woman predicted…
more would come…his brother’s church was no more…
Ecko owed his brother a church and he needed to confess…
Ecko leaves the village.

He finds himself alive after the plane crash and his conversion took place there. That is why when he killed after that conversion he imposed the penance of silence.

Pardon my spelling, that is supposed to be “Ascension.”

I think what the sadiepet was saying is that before he died his brother asked Mr. Eko if he (Mr. Eko) would like to have his brother hear his confession? I was guessing that it was in regards to the first man Mr. Eko killed (when he was young) and Mr. Eko said that he was right in killing that man that he wasn’t sorry for killing that man.

Let’s all put the purgatory thing to rest. The producers say no, it’s not purgatory. Our faith tells us you can’t sin after you die and there’s plenty of sin going on on the island. Not to mention that one doesn’t die when they’re in purgatory - and if their death is suppose to be their release from purgatory - you’d think Charlie would’ve die when he kicked the heroine addiction.

At the end when he refused to confess I was shocked! He did seem to become this holy guy - building a church, reading & quoting Scripture, etc. And then to come to the end of his life and basically spout moral relativism - I still have no idea where that came from or what it was suppose to mean.

The Purgatory theory isn’t a perfect fit with the show. But maybe the producers don’t understand the Catholic teaching of Purgatory perfectly. Maybe Charlie has more sins we’ve yet to see.

What did you think of last night’s fall finale? It’s too bad that we won’t see how the cliffhanger ends until Feburary. Personally, I think that the finale was the best episode yet, complete with twists and turns.

Wasn’t that guy from “Firefly” Kate’s husband? I really liked Kate’s flashback and how they tied it to Sawyer.

I wasn’t expecting Jack’s cross when he did Ben’s surgery. What can Kate and Sawyer do now since there’s no place to go? Why does Colleen’s husband want to kill Sawyer? (I thought Sun shot her.) I am glad that Sawyer is alive for now. Sawyer seemed to be at peace with it, which is why I was sorta surprised that Colleen’s husband didn’t just do it anyway when Jack asked for Kate.

Did you notice that Colleen’s husband said that Jack wasn’t on Jacob’s list?

Followed by his being killed but walking hand in hand with his brother as they were when they were younger…

Here’s how I see it:

Ecko was blessed that his brother gave him the head’s up that his time was near.
It gave him time to reflect and prepare.
When he met up with his brother he played the “this is all God’s plan anyway” card…(predestination, is that what it’s called? or is it determinism?)

Given that philosophy, he professes he is not sorry for killing the man because it meant his brother could live in God’s graces, not tainted like he became. Basically, he’s saying he is not sorry for giving up his own life, his own chance at salvation since it was the only way he could give salvation to his brother. Had his brother shot the man he would have ended up like Ecko and Ecko could not let that happen. He died so that his brother could live.

His time to die was at hand no matter how he answered.
I think the brother said “You speak to me as if I was your brother” to emphasize that this confession opportunity was between Ecko and God not Ecko and him.

I think for Ecko it didn’t matter to whom he was confessing - the answer was the same - I am not sorry I gave up my life for my brother.

I think he got pummelled for not regretting killing people (not just the one his brother was to kill, but the others in the gangs he killed…that if he had remorse for those, he probably wouldn’t have been pummeled like that but would have died a more peaceful way. Yet he did make the ultimate sacrifice so he wasn’t damned to hell, instead he was reunited with his brother in the end as they were in happier times - probably the most happiest and secure he felt when he was alive.

That’s my theory. 🙂

Best yet, yes. GRRRRR about having to wait until February though.

I will not be watching that replacement series even though they will be showing sneak peaks at what’s to come on Lost out of protestation for this whole ‘split’ season programming thing. They need to stop doing that…just show a season from start to finish like in the old days. It’s bad enough the show gets broken up for sport events, but to actually schedule a break in like that - hogwash!

I guess they figure people will not be watching regular programming over the holiday months of November/December and early January because of football/parades/parties/traveling - so why not put something else in that spot…but in this day of TiVo and DVD recorders and such what’s the big deal?

Firefly and Serenity. Too bad he couldn’t have been one of the island survivors. I like him!

I like that Sawyer and Kate finally connected, but I honestly did not follow her flashbacks to this new relationship…could you explain what I missed?

I just saw it as a flashback to show why she has this tendency to stay on the run…but how did that tie in to her feelings for Sawyer? She still has feelings for Jack…and what’s with her yelling in the walkie talkie she won’t leave without “YOU”?? I know she’s looking at Sawyer as she says that, and I know she’s really saying she won’t leave without Sawyer but why didn’t she just say I’m not leaving without Sawyer???

Yeah, that cross was great.
I have no idea what Kate, Sawyer or Jack are going to do…
I thought maybe Ben lied to Sawyer when he pointed to the other island to say it was their island, but then I remember Sawyer was out on the boat with the other two guys last season so he knows what their island looks like.

Colleen’s husband wants to kill Sawyer because Sawyer’s a royal pain, he represents ‘them’, and Kate loves him so it would be payback in that way. I think he should kill Kate but Ben likes Kate so I suppose that’s not an option.
Did you notice that Colleen’s husband said that Jack wasn’t on Jacob’s list?
Oooh…I missed that. Who’s Jacob

Oh, and what is this between Alex and Ben???
Alex is that wild woman’s lost daughter…who helped the blonde pregnant lady escape.
Alex seems to be on the rampage about losing her boyfriend…she keeps asking “Where’s Ben?”…
Ben, about to go under the knife asks if ‘she’ was there or asked about him or something like that, to which that other woman said she came back last night (was that after those guys captured her?)

The fact they would not harm a hair on her head shows Alex means a great deal to Ben…
but is Alex’s “Ben”…this Ben?
How creepy is that?!?!

We know that Ben, Jack and those others are under water in an old aquarium. Perhaps Ben is staying down there until all goes well…but Alex doesn’t know he wasn’t taken away or killed…just that he’s missing???

Did I miss a connection? Was there a direct hook to Sawyer in Kate’s flashback? I was occupied with the kids during some of the scenes and thought that I missed something there.

I did catch the comment about Jacob that was mentioned in typical Lost fashion. New name I am sure we will be hearing more about later.

And what about Alex yelling: “They’re going to kill your boyfriend, like they killed mine!”

Another wait until February, or March, or April, or Next Season statement! This show can be frustrating.

I think since Alex was taken from Danielle as a baby, and she was raised by the Others, Ben is like a father in some wierd way.

Her boyfriend that she mentioned last night, must be the boy who was in the cage across from Sawyer earlier in the season.

Oh my goodness, I wasn’t expecting that end! I’m glad Kate and Sawyer finally got together, and that Jack decided to do the surgery…although I felt really bad when he saw them together. And I agree, they need to stop this with split seasons.
