I was disappointed in Widmore. I thought he would be more of a force at work on the Island, but he sure went out with a whimper. It looks like the only thing he did of any service to the Island was returning Desmond to the Island and blasting him with EM energy to awaken him in the alt-universe.

I think we’ve also seen the last of Richard. His plan came to nothing. Didn’t Ilana claim that Jacob said Richard would know what to do? In the end, Richard didn’t know anything.

And what’s up with Ben? Has he changed sides again? I’m thinking that MIB better be ready for a Linus-esque double cross.

We did get a few more answers and revelations in this episode:
  • Kate was crossed off the list of candidates because she became a mother. She was still eligible to be a candidate though if she chose it. Why “Kwon” was on the list when Sun was a mother is a bit less clear, although Kwon could refer only to Jin.
  • The Losties were specifically chosen by Jacob to go to the Island because they were lonely people with broken lives who needed the Island as much as it needed them
  • Desmond’s role is the “fail safe” to save Jacob’s plan if the candidates fail.
  • The chosen candidate becomes the Guardian by drinking water blessed by the previous candidate.
  • A Guardian’s ghost can appear on the Island until his ash is consumed in a fire.
-Becoming the Guardian seems to confer some esoteric knowledge, because Jacob knew the long incantation by heart despite only hearing it once before thousands of years in the past. Jack seemed to change after drinking the water.
I wonder if Rose and Bernard are on the Island and flashed there along with the Losties after the Incident. Perhaps they discovered Desmond in the well before Jack or Locke could find him.
I am guessing that Jack wil find a way to kill smokey, and then everything goes back to normal. I previously thought Jack would just take Jacob’s place (it was obvious for a long time to me that Jack was the new Jacob). However, smokey stated last night he wants to destroy the island, so Jack will have to find a way to destroy smokey first.

I believe Ben has not changed sides. I think he is playing smokey in order to be ready to help when the opportunity arises. I think he killed Whitemore out of plain old anger, and figured it helps him remain on smokey’s inside for now. I think in the end Ben will have somehow helped bring things back to normal.

As far as I can tell, baded on Crazy-Mom’s ability to slaughter a village (and barring any other superpowers on her part), either:
  1. Guardians control, or usually control Smokies, or
  2. Guardians and Smokies are two sides of the same coin.
I’m wondering if it’s got more do to with an ‘invicible’-type quality that the guardian possesses? But if not, I’d lean towards 2 myself.

😃 I’m looking forward to it!!

I’m thinking the same. I was racking my brains to see who I was missing.

I concur

Over all, I really enjoyed the episode. Jack was no great shock but it was still pretty cool. The whole Widmore thing was kind of a let down except of course for the ‘new’ Ben. How AWESOME to see Danielle again! That’s the first time we ever saw her ‘cleaned up’ as well. 😊

Oh, and VC - I cleaned my ears out real well this morning. As Dr. Frasier Crane would say, “I’m listening”. 😃

Yeah, Danielle was great! She’s not a very convincing French woman (she kinda has an Eastern European accent), but I really like the actress (shout out to Babylon 5) and it was nice seeing the crazy Island lady clean up. How cool and ironic was her line to Ben: “I’m going to have you over for dinner even if I have to kidnap you”. 😃

As for the finale, I’m betting Desmond will catalyze the alternate reality merge by walking into the light at the heart of the Island. It seems as if the light on the Island is the same electromagnetism and exotic matter that manifests itself at the Swan and Orchid Dharma stations. Only Desmond can withstand the EM energy!

I still think it is option #3: The smoke monster is really the disembodied and warped soul of a man or woman who walks into the heart of the Island. It is possible for a guardian to exist on the Island without a smoke monster. They aren’t two sides of the same coin, or controlled by Guardians.

I speculate that Mother was both a smoke monster and a Guardian: she made the mistake of entering the Heart of the Island at some point (probably after becoming the Guardian). Perhaps she could die at MIB’s hands because she was also a Guardian, and MIB was a candidate to replace her. It will be interesting to see if there is a way and how to kill the smoke monster in Sunday’s Finale.

It was an interesting episode to be sure. I agree that Widmore did go out with a whimper. I was expecting more from him. Oh well, I’m sure the finale will be action-packed enough without him. 🙂

We did have to see Ben’s dark side at least once more before the end of the series. It would be interesting to see him con the MIB. After all, MIB played him pretty well. I’m sure Ben hasn’t forgotten that. I’m expecting Ben to die in heroic fashion as he irreparably messes up MIB’s plans. 🙂

It was rather interesting when Jack “drank of the cup”. You could see the light go on in his eyes as though he was suddenly infused with knowledge. I found it interesting that Jacob gave them a choice because he had not been given one.

What really struck me the most, though, was the very end when Locke said that he wanted to find Desmond because he was going to help him destroy the island. We know that, in the alt timeline, the island has been destroyed. So does MIB succeed? Does Desmond help him? We’ll find out the answers to these questions and many more on Sunday! 🙂

I thought the same thing when she said that. 🙂 I also thought it was touchingly and tragicly ironic when she told Ben that he was the closest thing to a father Alex has ever had.

So, any guesses as to who will be back for the finale? Charlie for sure. I’m guessing Juliette will be back, too (my money is on her as David Shephard’s mother in the alt timeline). And – of course – Vincent! 😛

I am just wondering if they will all get off the island, or will Jack remain there like Jacbon did for so long.

I wish Mr. Eko would return, but I seriously doubt it. He’s my favorite character after Locke and Ben.

MY favorite characters were, from the very beginning, Jack and Locke (as Locke, not as smokey dude). I felt the writers made it clear from the beginning that they each were going to play critical roles.

I will say, I think the smooth acting of the actor who plays Desmond is very good.

I sure hope they do not ruin the ending of this show.

Let’s not forget, whatever Widmore knew he told it to Desmond. Sothe finale should be interesting to say the least and of all of them, I would venture to guess that Desmond knows what to do moreso than MIB or Jack.

Miles could also have access to what Widmore knows via his ability to read the dead’s last thoughts. He ran off into the jungle and presumably survived Smokie’s wrath.

I heard that the actor that played Eko wanted to make a guest appearance this season but that they weren’t interested. I’ve always felt that Eko’s death was the most abrupt and disjointed, but I understand that the actor was going through some personal things at the time (the death of his parents) which necessitated his leaving.

I wonder if Shannon or Boone are going to be in the finale. I thought they were supposed to make an appearance towards the end of the season. I’m guessing Rose and Bernard will show up at some point, too.

Do you think Richard is dead? He got tossed pretty far. But I have a hard time believing they’ll leave it at that. I’m still holding out hope for Lapidus, too. 😛

Yeah - sorry I was sloppy w/ my answer. I didn’t mean to agree w/ the ‘two sides of the same coin part’. I was looking at it as they’re both powerful dudes.
I also thought it was touchingly and tragicly ironic when she told Ben that he was the closest thing to a father Alex has ever had.
That was a pretty cool moment.

VINCENT!! That’d be awesome! My wife and I were talking about Juliette as Jack’s ex-wife as well. The only other important person we haven’t seen is Penny
Do you think Richard is dead? He got tossed pretty far. But I have a hard time believing they’ll leave it at that.
I know! I yelled NOT RICHARD!!! In my head I was thinking, wait Jacob gave him eternal life, he can’t die. Ah well.

And how smooth of that was Ben when he just sat down on the front porch?

We’ve seen Penny in the alt-timeline. She was running at the baseball stadium, Desmond ran into her there after Faraday tells him to.
Maybe she is Jack’s ex-wife. We did see Jack running (presumably) there at the start of the series when he meets Desmond for the first time, so it is probable…

Prediction: Richard will show-up in the final and he will get off the island. I think there is a good chance Juliet will be reunited with Sawyer. Hurley will be reunited with Libby. Ben will live the life of the teacher in the real world with his daughter.

My original thought was that Jack would remain on the island as the protector, and that Kate will stay behind with him. Now, I am thinking Jack, and the others with him, might find a way to kill MiB.

Possible concert purpose: Maybe Desmond is gathering all the island people togther in one spot to help them “wake-up” to their alternate realities? The gang’s all here? Perhaps timed exactly with the moment Jack and his crew destroy MiB, and then they all flash forward to their real world alternate lives at the concert for Jack’s son?

There is one major problem I can think of with my theory: Jack asked Jacob how long he was going to have to do the job of protector. Jacob told him “as long as you can.” That, to me, is an implication that Jack might have to be potector for a very long time, and in that case I fall back to my idea that Jack stays on the island and Kate stays with him.

“But it only ends once, anything that happens before that is just progress.” Show ain’t over yet! 😃

But. . . do you mean to say that so far Jacob is still a good guy? Just because he only manipulated lonely people who had nothing to lose? Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley seemed to accept that explanation as absolving Jacob. . . but their question was “Why did you bring us to the Island.” Somebody should ask Jacob about the plane crash and all those other people who weren’t important to his plan.

I have the feeling that by the end of Sunday, we still aren’t going to have a consensus on whether Jacob is evil or not. There is ambiguity on this point due to the fact that Jacob is a man with godlike powers who uses them to influence people’s fate. A lot of people have died, and the question remains: Is Jacob justified in bringing them to an Island to die for a righteous cause?

Even if the cause is of the noblest import (saving the world from the Smoke monster’s machinations), one can always say that Jacob’s ethics are utilitarian: his end’s are noble, but his means are not. Utilitarianism is not exactly a virtuous moral philosophy for a board full of upstanding Catholics. 😉

Having said all that, I will concede and eat crow if it turns out that Jacob’s motivation is not to save the world. Otherwise, I think it can be argued that he is fundamentally “good” in the Lost universe, given that this isn’t a Catholic show. Bonus points go to Jacob if there is a universe merge that undoes many or all of the deaths on the Island.
