Mandatory mask poll

Because we know how long rubella antibodies last. And that they confer immunity. In a virus where that’s unknown, and where possible mutations are also unknown, that’s not clear.

Everyone I know who’s tested positive for antibodies was informed that they should continue to behave as if they could catch or transmit it. I was told that when they drew blood for the test. I’m surprised your doctor or testing facility didn’t.

Antibodies are very, very studied and we know that presence of antibodies almost always guarantees immunity.
Not true. For example in the case of HIV, after infection there is a development of tons of HIV specific antibodies but no protection from reinfection. In the past were tested many vaccines able to elicit a production of antibodies against HIV but there was no protective effect.

Yeah, that’s been the most shocking thing to me on these boards. You’d have thought practicing Catholics would have been all over sacrificing to keep their neighbors safe. But no.
What’s amazing to me is that here - in a largely “Judeo-Christian” nation - this whole mask thing has become such an issue. You would think that we - Christians at least - would be falling over ourselves to look out for each other and make each other feel safer. But no - the only places where this sort of behavior is common place is in largely pagan countries.

How have we - how have I become so selfish? God have mercy on us.

I don’t want it to be entirely mandatory since some people have lung conditions such as asthma or even COPD who have trouble breathing through them. So maybe mandatory unless you have a doctor’s note?

By mistake I hit no feelings either way, but I wanted to hit no 😦

You can’t get reinfected with HIV since the infection is chronic. You only get infected once.

You know, upon reflection, why make any requirements for public safety mandatory? I mean, if a restaurant cook doesn’t feel like washing his hands before preparing your food, why should we make him? And isn’t safe food handling kind of arbitrary? 100 degrees or 140–I don’t believe internal temperature of chicken should be that rigid. And most people survive E. Coli

The whole requirement to sterilize combs and scissors at a barbershop or salon—shouldn’t it be up to the individual stylist to determine if lice are a real likelihood?

Also, if I want to drive 90 mph after drinking a few shots, why shouldn’t I? Sorry if you and your family get in my way and don’t make it, but if you weren’t willing to take the risk, shouldn’t you have stayed home?

I have asthma. I wear a mask, although it is a bit difficult if I have to wear it for several hours straight, and if I have to talk a lot (at work).
For someone with asthma, which would they prefer? Wearing a mask, or a higher chance of getting covid? I’ll take mask wearing, please.

I have a co-worker who has COPD. He is happy to wear his mask and we are both very happy our board mandated the public to wear masks when they come near us.

Government can’t tell us what to do! Wear shoes, not drink and drive! 👿
Let’s just abolish health departments inspecting restaurants! Waste of taxpayers’ money!
No one’s holding a gun to their heads to go to a restaurant!

I agree that the problem is that we don’t know how long the antibodies for covid last. We can say for certain that they confer immunity though. Of course the virus can mutate all of sudden so you don’t have immunity against the new virus, but that could hypothetically happen with the rubella virus as well.

Okay sure. Since HIV-2 is almost exclusive to West Africa and has low transmission rates, I assumed that we were talking about HIV-1 only. But yes, you can get HIV-2 even if you already have HIV-1. What can’t happen, though, is reinfection with HIV-1 if you already have that (except maybe if you were cured from the initial HIV infections through stem cell transplant from a donor with genetic immunity to HIV which has happened exactly two times).

What if I told you that I know a 75 year old single woman who has to go to the grocery store every week. She’s terrified of the virus. What if you wearing a mask made her less fearful - even if we’re not sure it works. Would it not be helpful (even loving?) to her if you sacrificed your comfort for her psychological well being?
What if I told you that I know a 75 year old woman (my mother) who feels more at ease in grocery stores where people are not wearing masks? Would it be loving to her if you didn’t wear a mask when you were around her for her psychological well being?

Do you acknowledge that there is a pandemic?
Do you agree that covid is a pandemic?

If she asked me to take it off around her - or if I knew this was so - I’d of course do so. (Given our current situation, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that - at least with 70+ year olds, you’re safe starting out with the mask on).

May I ask why your mom feels uncomfortable around people wearing masks, during a pandemic?

I’d post a link to the CDC data on death % for those north of 70, but I’m too lazy. I’m sure you can come up with a ton of good excuses to keep from wearing a mask. Carry on.

For the same reasons I do. Don’t ask me to repeat those reasons please.
