- Amputation of the hand as a moral punishment for theft.
Perfect punishment if done correctly, I will explain this in more
detail in the future as I am short on time now. But I agree with it 100% if it is done correctly.
Ok as I promised I would promised here is my further explanation.
First this law only applies to stealing things that aren’t your basic needs. If you are starving and you steal, your not punished for it. The second Khalifa Umar ibn al Khattab banned this rule for an entire year due to a drought in Medina and the government couldn’t provide people basic necessities, thus he couldn’t punish them. This law applies to someone who has all their basic needs, or for example he has a honda, but wants a lexus, thus he steals his neighbors lexus. Such a person will be punished.
Second when a person breaks into your house, it ruins the sense of security you have in your own home, your wife doesn’t feel safe if she is home alone, neither do your kids, the neighborhood is full of fear and no one trusts anyone else. Everytime you leave your house for one hour you are worried if someone is in there going through your belongings. This ruins any and all sense of peace of security you have. The robber doesn’t just steal your material goods, but he also steals all peace and security from your heart, your family and neighborhood.
Now lets assume such a person steals and gets caught, in most countries he will be put in jail and you will pay for him (through your tax money). Now this man stole from you, why should you pay for him to be put in jail? He did the crime and your paying for his crime from your own pocket. Such people also usually leave jail and come right back to your house or the house of someone else.
Now if his hand is amputated it will be only him paying for the crime and everyone who has the slightest idea or thought of doing something similar will quickly change their mind as they don’t want to same thing happening to them. This punishment works. In Saudi Arabia this law is practiced, though not always in the correct method, for example it might only be applied to the poor, but the stores don’t even close, when the shop owner leaves he simply leaves the door wide open and put a stick or something similar to let others know he is away for lunch or something. No one there even thinks of stealing. It’s so peaceful. You can leave your store wide open for an entire day, come back at night and you won’t find a thing missing.
It may seem like a brutal punishment, but the crime is a horrendous crime. We seem to look at it as if it is nothing, but indeed it causes much harm in society, such as I listed above. May God guide us to what He loves and is pleased with.
