Men - how do you feel about your wife seeing a male physician?

This is not a maturity or control issue! It’s about respect for your husband, and protection of the intimacy of the marriage. What self respecting woman would submit herself to a non-emergent male gyn exam, when an appointment could be made?
Homers:

So, if there are no female ob/gyn in your area you feel that a woman should be martyred for the respect of her husband through breast cancer or cervical cancer rather than submit to a male ob/gyn for examination?

How do you know that the female ob/gyn isn’t a lesbian and really getting off on the exam too? Maybe out of modesty, women should not have any gynelogical care at all, and only allow doctors to exam them while fully dressed?

Dear Paulin,
While it might be best to find a same sex care giver who possibly has their own family and children.
That’s the kind of GYN who violated me - I doubt she was aroused, but it was physically violent and traumatic, I bled for days, and she was completely dismissive of my feelings and what I was telling her (so much for all women being more compassionate because they’ve experienced cramps, cysts, et al). This woman could not have cared less about my well being.

On the other hand, my mother was sexually assaulted as a teenager by a male GYN, an upstanding, church going, family man at that. Her experience was why I chose the woman doctor.

My best “doctor” for that area wasn’t a doctor at all, but a female physicians assistant. Much more gentle and compassionate. I’m currently looking for a new doctor (new area) and am terrified to go - I did tell my husband when he was helping me search out possibilities, “I don’t care if it’s a man or a woman, just please God give me the best person”. The open appointment happened to be with a woman; but she cancelled and I was rescheduled with a man. Who knows 🤷 It initially made me nervous, but I’m going through a “maybe God does know more than me” phase.

Homer, I sense your heart and intentions are in the right place, but could you please be a little more sensitive to the women (and men) who are reading this and have been sexually assaulted in their lives. I was sexually abused at a very young age (think preschool) and it took me years to feel clean, even though the only man I’ve ever willingly been with is my husband. I also had a very close call with aquaintance-rape in high school and a couple other creepy close calls. If a doctor, male or female, is taking liberties with a patient, it does not impugn her modesty, chastity, or intimacy with her now or future husband. Sexual assault is not sex and does not make the victim somehow less pure or whole. Some of your posts/phrasing brought back that dark cloud of “I’m evil, I attracted it, why try because I’m going to hell anyway” feeling.

Marsha…you know your taken it me a bit too literally now. Like I’ve said, it there is a code blue situation, by all means, the first available qualified doctor please take over. But, if there is time for an appointment, certainly there’s time for modesty. My wife has a male dentist. All I am saying, is when it’s time to disrobe, perhaps the best policy is to have the same sex care givers, such that there is less probablility of liberties occurring. *I personally have never heard of a female doctor (knock on wood) taking advantage of a patient, whereas there are countless males that have. Modesty is the best policy in my book.

Homers,

Your kind of thinking scares me. Because the next step in that kind of thinking is that the woman has been violated; she is unclean; people must die to restore the family honor.

Let me ask you a hypothetical question. Your wife is at the mall. A terrorist releases a chemical agent. First responders(police, fire, emt) ask everyone to strip off all clothing immediately and walk over and get into a line for decontamination. Men, women and children all totally nude will be scrubbed down and hosed off by men wearing hazmat suits.

What do you want your wife to do? Should she preserve her modesty and keep on her contaminated clothing that will kill her? Will you think less of her because 50 firemen and 200 mall customers have seen your wife in all her glory?🤷

BTW. I read a post-911 article that discussed this concern. In a chemical attack, every minute that you continue to be exposed to the toxin lessens your chance of survival. such, there is a concern among emergency personnel that a significant percentage of the U.S. population would hesitate or refuse to undress. They would die.

Thanks for your personal share. If I could give you a hug, I would. I know how I feel about this topic, and I feel that it is what I’ve been called to do. Peace and Blessings!

Well, probably they will have more than one station set up, so they could segregate by sex, but the point is well taken. Scrub me down and get that stuff off RIGHT NOW.

I don’t follow the line of thinking here at all about opposite sex doctors. Big deal.

Quite frankly, Homers, would you have married your wife if you knew that she had a “past” or had “fooled around” in high school or college?

Paul…Hi there, thanks for your response. You must have not fully read my previous posts as I said, there’s a difference between an “emergency” and “making an appointment”. When there is time for an appointment, there is time for modesty. The situation you described is different. Not trying to be unreasonable here. What is scary to me is mothers rushing their young daughters off to male doctors at a young age, telling them that is ok’, he’s a doctor.

Folks, we have all sinned at one time of our lives, and have all fell short of the glory of God, but the topic of this thread is: Men-how do you feel about your wife seeing a male doctor. It is my opinion, that modesty is always the best answer, which I strongly believe that scripture calls for. I personally feel that anything short of this is a violation of any marriage. I am entitled to my opinion, as well as anyone else. Question, have you ever read Leviticus 18? My basis is the Holy Bible, what is yours?

1 ** The LORD said to Moses,*
2 ** "Speak to the Israelites and tell them: I, the LORD, am your God.**
3 ** You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you once lived, nor shall you do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you; do not conform to their customs.**
4 ** My decrees you shall carry out, and my statutes you shall take care to follow. I, the LORD, am your God.**
5 ** Keep, then, my statutes and decrees, for the man who carries them out will find life through them. I am the LORD.**
6 ** "None of your female relatives may go to a male OB/GYN, for it is an abomination.

Oh, man, how could I have missed this?

There is nothing immodest about seeing a male physician. Check the definition of modesty before you say that.

The question the OP asked was how do men feel. Well, to feel that something makes you uncomfortable or uneasy, doesn’t make it sinful. If you and your wife have decided that you both feel uneasy about her seeing a male gyno, then so be it, fine! That is YOUR PERSONAL feeling and decision about. People who don’t share your feelings might just be a little less insecure about it, that doesn’t make it sinful.

The OB GYN that delivered my 3 kids and was my doc since I was 17 is a caring, gentle man who took great care of women and their babies. His RN wife and he ran his office together and their 5 children would often play in the room next to the exam room. There was not a thin on earth immodest in the slightest in me trusting him with the medical care my body required.

Maybe what this comes down to, is more about you, and your feelings about your wife being looked at by another man. Or, maybe it has to do with you wanting to protect your wife from feeling uncomfortable. However you slice it, it doesn’t amount to everyone who disagrees with you being immodest or sinful.

Leviticus 18
Sexual Relations18The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
2 Speak to the people of Israel and say to them: I am the Lord your God. 3You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you. You shall not follow their statutes. 4My ordinances you shall observe and my statutes you shall keep, following them: I am the Lord your God. 5You shall keep my statutes and my ordinances; by doing so one shall live: I am the Lord.

6 None of you shall approach anyone near of kin to uncover nakedness: I am the Lord. 7You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father, which is the nakedness of your mother; she is your mother, you shall not uncover her nakedness. 8You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife; it is the nakedness of your father. 9You shall not uncover the nakedness of your sister, your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether born at home or born abroad. 10You shall not uncover the nakedness of your son’s daughter or of your daughter’s daughter, for their nakedness is your own nakedness. 11You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife’s daughter, begotten by your father, since she is your sister. 12You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister; she is your father’s flesh. 13You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister, for she is your mother’s flesh. 14You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s brother, that is, you shall not approach his wife; she is your aunt. 15You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law: she is your son’s wife; you shall not uncover her nakedness. 16You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother’s wife; it is your brother’s nakedness. 17You shall not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter, and you shall not take* her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter to uncover her nakedness; they are your* flesh; it is depravity. 18And you shall not take* a woman as a rival to her sister, uncovering her nakedness while her sister is still alive.

19 You shall not approach a woman to uncover her nakedness while she is in her menstrual uncleanness. 20You shall not have sexual relations with your kinsman’s wife, and defile yourself with her. 21You shall not give any of your offspring to sacrifice them* to Molech, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord. 22You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination. 23You shall not have sexual relations with any animal and defile yourself with it, nor shall any woman give herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it: it is perversion.

24 Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, for by all these practices the nations I am casting out before you have defiled themselves. 25Thus the land became defiled; and I punished it for its iniquity, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. 26But you shall keep my statutes and my ordinances and commit none of these abominations, either the citizen or the alien who resides among you 27(for the inhabitants of the land, who were before you, committed all of these abominations, and the land became defiled); 28otherwise the land will vomit you out for defiling it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you. 29For whoever commits any of these abominations shall be cut off from their people. 30So keep my charge not to commit any of these abominations that were done before you, and not to defile yourselves by them: I am the Lord your God.

Homers, I’m so sorry.

You are using the ESV? Why? Nakedness should be translated as intercourse or “relations”. You missed the point of the whole passage. It even title the chapter “Sexual Relations”

*1 The LORD said to Moses,
2 "Speak to the Israelites and tell them: I, the LORD, am your God.
3 You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you once lived, nor shall you do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you; do not conform to their customs.
4 My decrees you shall carry out, and my statutes you shall take care to follow. I, the LORD, am your God.
5 Keep, then, my statutes and decrees, for the man who carries them out will find life through them. I am the LORD.
6 1 "None of you shall approach a close relative to have sexual intercourse with her. I am the LORD.
7 You shall not disgrace your father by having intercourse with your mother. Besides, since she is your own mother, you shall not have intercourse with her.
8 You shall not have intercourse with your father’s wife, for that would be a disgrace to your father.
9 You shall not have intercourse with your sister, your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether she was born in your own household or born elsewhere.
10 You shall not have intercourse with your son’s daughter or with your daughter’s daughter, for that would be a disgrace to your own family. *

Get the point? It’s not about being naked in front of someone of the opposite sex.

Thanks, however, I believe that I am now through with this thread. I wish everyone the best of luck in their future selection of healthcare providers.

I’m not second guessing anything one bit. He was a great Doc and if I hadn’t moved out of state I’d still go to him gladly.

My wife doesn’t feel comfortable with a male doctor. So we both see the same female doctor. No big deal.

I’ve worked in several OBGYN clinics. I know how “some” of the doctors speak about their patients. I’d like to say that they’re all professional, but that is just “not” the case. Still on the whole, I’d say that 90% of whom I’ve worked with and around were professional.

Once, when I was first starting my career, I flat-out asked one of the doctors just “how” he could look at this all day and then go home to his wife. He told me that “it’s all in your head” and how you want to look at things. He said he loved his wife, and that was the difference for him.

Wow, I had no idea people felt so strongly, morally, about not going to see a male ob/gyn. I understand being personally squeamish about it, maybe, but to question a man’s motives in entering the field of gynecology?

I didn’t read the whole thread, but one thing that hasn’t been pointed out as far as I can tell is that gynecology is one of the few fields in medicine where the physician can participate in both primary care-- many women use their GYNs as their primary care physicians-- as well as major surgery. This alone attracts a lot of doctors to the field so they can participate in both aspects of medicine. It really, really is not at all about some disordered preference to spend all day in the presence of women’s private parts. Sheesh!🤷

Why are you posting a passage about sexual relations, in a thread about women seeing male ob/gyns? Exams and delivering babies aren’t anywhere on the same plain with ‘sexual relations.’
