I think it’s odd, since we’ve lived here for five years. We’ve lived in three other states, in large cities, and I knew some of our local police. When I read that MPD has one of the lowest rates of residence for its police a few years ago I was not surprised. But it is a very disconnected feeling when you hardly ever see them about except at high school games or arresting someone on the street.
IDK, I don’t know if it’s that odd.

In my 40 years on the planet I’ve never known a local officer personally.

You are right. Ageism is rampant in America.

But even before I encountered ageism, there were a large number of jobs I applied for and didn’t get. I am a white woman and I applied for jobs that were within my scope, but I often didn’t get the job I applied for. I would apply for many before I landed a job. What can I say about the others? I didn’t get the job because of… What can I fill in the blank with? I couldn’t call it racism, back then I couldn’t call it ageism, I am not sure what ___ism I could blame. Here is what happened: I just didn’t get the job. It happens. You send out resumes for it seems like a bazillion jobs, and you don’t get the job. It just happens. It happens to everybody.

No it doesn’t happen to everybody, thats the point. Or at least not equally.

How many job interviews do you think Trump or his children have ever had to go for? What about Chelsea Clinton or the Bush children?
Is it genuinely because they are exponentially better or more qualified in any relevant way than most who do?

Do any of the juniors actually have to work a day in their lives of they don’t want to? I don’t know, but there are rich (who yes, are predominantly WASP) kids out.there who don’t.

That’s speculative and they come rich and influential families so that’s irrelevant.

Or Obama’s children. How much work do you think they will ever do? You seem to have left him out when naming presidents whose children you envy.

It’s not very helpful to envy people who are wealthy or famous or socially privileged. Those who do that will have a long list of grievances.

The only reason I didn’t mention Obamas children was because I didn’t think they were old enough to be pursuing careers. That is how obsessive and jealous I am - didn’t even realise how old they are.

By the way - I have achieved plenty to be proud of without having a famous family name to cash in on. And I am proud and happy and definitely not jealous or envious that this has been the case.

Thanks for ignorantly perpetuating a few unwarranted steteotypes.

Sometimes all that is needed to flame a large fire is a spark. This mans death was that spark and years of corruption by authorities.
It has been said, that when the price of bread is too expensive for a lot of people; it takes very little to spark riots and revolution. Scary times.

Exactly. That’s why it’s tiresome to keep hearing of this supposed white privilege. You don’t get offered jobs just because you are white. You just don’t. People related to powerful and influential people do however find it much easier to get jobs/positions, even if they don’t deserve them. Why aren’t people, black, white, or any other colour, focusing their anger on the real privileged people and their shady dealings? They don’t, because the elites (for instance those who own the media) play divide and conquer and convince you to dislike somebody else who is in a similar life situation to you, but just a different colour, to protect themselves. People need to stop falling for this.
That’s speculative and they come rich and influential families so that’s irrelevant.
It isn’t irrelevant though. It makes an important point about who really has the privilege and this doesn’t get focused on enough. The average black man on the street is taught to believe that the average white man he sees on the street is part of the problem as to why he can’t get ahead in life. This is false.

That kind of depends on what they are being forced to submit to. The only type of government this statement would be universal is called anarchy, not democracy.
Not only the problems being experienced in the land of freedom but all around the world our recent history seems to be showing great strain & rising civil disobedience with voices from extremes coming to the surface.

Westernized nations are always pointing the finger at autocracy & here we are using the same tactics. No totalitarianism yet, but it certainly is knocking at the door.

Fully agree Eric,

I don’t condone any violence as I believe there are other ways.

But World history shows what happens to Pacifism campaign leaders… They generally get taken down or worse Shot dead.

I would rather call them campaign leaders for Justice, not pacifism. And sadly as you say, they generally get taken down; and justice suffers.

When justice suffers; people are angry. Like you; I don’t condone violence.

  • Draw up a list of demands regarding the
Minimum percentage of force must be POC.
How would you get around civil rights laws? Once you start watering them down… doesn’t this reinforce racial privilege? If you do it for the city, can suburbs do it too?

How do you know who is a person of color? If John who needs a job says he is a POC, how do you rule him out?

I was reading the news today, and I’m seeing so much about the riots protesting police brutality towards people of color in Minneapolis after the death of George Floyd. I know for certain they burnt down a Walmart, looted and vandalized a Target grocery store, destroyed a police precinct, and that’s just the stuff I know of. What are your thoughts on this? Are they justified in their destruction because it’s for a good cause?
Looting and rioting isn’t for a good cause. It is an expression of impotence and frustration that nevertheless makes the problem even worse. So no, the destruction is not justified. I suppose it is predictable, just as an increase in domestic violence can come with poverty and economic hopelessness, but that doesn’t make it justified.

I agree, by irrelevant I meant in regards to race.

Hello, I hate to post and run, but I’m running on fumes. Been veeeeery busy few days and still have volunteer work tomorrow!

But, the details are being worked out. Turns out the state is investigating the MPD for civil rights violations. Meanwhile, the city and various neighborhood associations and community groups are having very heavy discussions now on how defunding the police might work and how a new department might be formed in its place.

Still early in the talk phase but MPD has already lost contracts and revenue from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Public schools, and Minneapolis park services. Among others in the private sector.

In my city, the media and politicians go to extremes to differentiate between:

Protesters, regarded as very good, given free publicity, promotion…and…

Outside Agitators, who are very bad…(Why agitators would come here, rather than a closer city having riots, ?)

Even though politicians are only talking to the protesters, who have “no connection” to the agitators, still the implied threat of further agitation adds muscle to the demands of the protesters.

on how defunding the police might work
I see now what you alluded to earlier. Not disbanding the police, but defunding them significantly and re-directing the money to more community service professionals for those calls that should not need the police.

I won’t deny that there is something attractive about that. It would make it easier to make sure that officers work where they live. If police only answered real police calls, there would be less of a need. That said, time would tell whether citizens would live with being told “no” when they called and asked for a policeman.

In any case, I pray your city find solutions that work. Or that someone does and the rest can emulate them. We definitely need police that are more Andy Griffin and less Rambo.
