However, in the case of many of these sports…wrestling, football, hockey, etc…particularly at the younger level, there are not the options for girls to play outside of the boys teams. So until that day arrives, you let them play together.

It works, trust me.
Do you advocate allowing boys try out for girls teams? If they are equal, why are there separate teams to begin with?

Peace

Tim

And wrestling is certainly more of a contact sport than Football (although ironically, one less prone to injury for some reason)…where you’d have trouble distinguishing any major components of anatomy under all those pads.
It’s not ironic. It’s a matter of physics. Although, I’m sure you’d find it ironic a person in a car crash, wearing seat belt, and with no visible injury would be quite rattled in the head or incur whiplash.

Football players incur significant trauma to the brain over the course of their careers. Kind of like many boxers. And it’s not specifically the contact per se that causes that for boxers, again, it goes back to physics, and the consequence of the brain hitting the skull.

I hope you didn’t get beat by a girl that looks pretty feminine while you were on the mat. Then again for my small size I was above average in physical strength. I almost beat the JV guy for his spot simply due to my sheer strength, and he had been wrestling since at least his freshman year. As you stated correctly, wrestling is not all about strength. The varsity guy in my weight class wasn’t as strong as me either. But he had been wrestling since he was in grade school.

Bear in mind I used to spar (boxing) at around 140 lbs grown men that had boxing for years at 190 lbs and over 200 lbs. They took it easy on me of course. Although, not necessarily just letting me skate. I remember seeing the 190 pounder (he used to box all through this time in the Navy on their boxing team) knock a guy through the ropes LOL. Many cats were scared to spar him. He hit like a tone of bricks too. But I took his hits (though he never tried to knock me out), they also wore me down.

Anyways… I don’t much understand getting whooped by a female that looks like a female. As it will never happen to me I doubt I’ll ever comprehend it. But no young, male fighter under my charge would I ever put into a ring with a girl I knew would clean his clock from one side of the ring to the next. And anyone that would is a pathetic and incompetent coach in my regard.

Teddy Atlas and many great boxing coaches were never great boxers. Great fighters like Mike Tyson will probably never be great coaches.

Like Teddy Atlas (and I have no problem with training female wrestlers or boxers) I place great emphasis on the development of the warrior and athlete’s mind. On the mind of the developing girl or boy. I simply do not purchase into the idea you strengthen an already timid boy by allowing him to be thumped by a girl. And I won’t.

And no woman (not one that looks like a woman) will ever whoop me. Not many men twice my size will. So, I’m not worried about the anger from male feminist that have experienced being thumped by females.

I am involved in the running of a sports club that has 4 adult teams and roughly 500 children from 5-18. I am also involved in the administration of this sport on a regional level.

Decisions are made taking into account the considerations of all. A girl may be able to play a contact sport with boys - girls in general may not be. Once you allow one girl to play with boys then it becomes impossible to deny this to others.

The sport I am involved in is Rugby. (For those in America this is like a tougher version of American Football). We have mixed groups with girls and boys - up to the time they start playing full contact rugby. It would be negligent to allow girls or women to engage in full contact rugby with men.

I don’t know how american football is administered but in rugby there are regulations preventing mixed teams when full contact starts. In addition to the safety aspect on the pitch there are also other considerations. If you have mixed teams then you need to have separate changing rooms. To have two sides playing you need twice the space than if they were just single sex. Some clubs may have an abundance of changing facilities - I would be confident plenty don’t.

As with anything you don’t legislate based on exceptions. “Hard cases make bad laws”

No it’s not. And Americans are well aware of what the basics of rugby are. We grow up playing it all the time. It’s called American football with no pads on. It’s an effeminate version of American football with pads.

I played tackle football with no pads not just in childhood but for PT often in the Marine Corps. It’s a wimpish game next to the basic physics and impacts I endured in high school football with pads on. Throughout my childhood we at times allowed one or more girls to play tackle football with us on the front lawns. (For sexual reasons… everyone of us–even her own team mates–would try to tackle her. She was pretty nice looking. She used to get upset with it too).

But the physics behind rugby (tackle football with no pads) is different than the physics involved in American football. Tackling is different because pads allow for the kind of hits one associates with automobile collisions. And when you get to the high school level skeletal system and other anatomical consideration become more seriously involved in the physics behind force with X amount of weight colliding and Y velocity into another object built with conditions A, B, C, D and E…

Here are some examples: youtube.com/watch?v=2bmCtSPqJTE

Here is a link to youtube of some big football hits with pads on. The weight of these men and there velocity (speed + direction) is incredible. You’re better off in a car crash with your seat belt on.

The video with the title: The Biggest NFL hits in History! is well worth watching, Far better than these other vids I posted. But it has curse words in a rap song playing. So, I won’t directly link that.

youtube.com/results?search_query=incredible+nfl+hits&oq=incredible+nfl+hits&gs_l=youtube.3…1358.19683.0.20635.36.21.8.7.7.0.126.1978.7j14.21.0…0.0…1ac.1.BvqHV8TckyI

This however is a vid with a rock or metal song playing. It’s decent compliation video of hits but not that great. youtube.com/watch?v=pPObnPS-LIs

You won’t be able to find any professional rugby videos with the same physics involved. It’s mainly grabbing, and pulling people down with others piling on top. Big deal.

So sorry…but did the article say that the girl is at increased risk?
I don’t think so. It said she excelled. It implied she was better at the sport than many of her male teammates.

Please site some studies that say girls in mixed gender sports are at an increased risk of being injured or having negative health issues.

What kind of negative health issues are you suggesting they will get that others will not? All may get bloody noses or broken bones. That’s the nature of many sports.
  1. cnn.com/CNN/anchors_reporters/hoye.sarah.html the link to the reporter’s bio. Please show me where said bio indicates she has any sort of training or education that would validate her opinion concerning the girl “excelling” at the sport or not at any health risk.
  2. As I stated in post 9, there are plenty of actual scientific studies done by people with actual training and education on sports and sports related health risks showing that female athletes are at an increased risk of injury when playing in this type of mixed gender sport. All one has to do to find said studies is to google for scholarly articles.
  3. Here are a few that just deal with the fact that female athletes are at a greater risk for knee injury in non-contact sports that require a similar amount of running and knee use as football- ajs.sagepub.com/content/27/3/294.short , ajs.sagepub.com/content/27/3/312.short, ajs.sagepub.com/content/28/1/98.short, ajs.sagepub.com/content/35/10/1635.short, ajs.sagepub.com/content/28/3/385.short
  4. The studies linked in 3 don’t even touch on the increased risk of injury among female athletes when playing on a mixed gender team (and if you like I can link scholarly articles which support this as well); and they don’t touch on the contact nature of football (the closest you will find is gender segregated rugby) or the impact playing football at a male level will have on a female athlete going through puberty.
  5. You can say “So sorry…” all you want, but actual studies done by actual professionals in the medical and sports professions > a non-scientific non-medical fluff piece by someone who’s credentials aren’t even medical or sports related.

…And now our federal government said they can be in the front lines in combat. I don’t know, with an AR15 going off they might break a nail…
Soldiers/Marines are typically armed with M16 fully automatic rifles and M4 carbines.

I find it VERY interesting that even though women are now allowed in combat, they are not required to reach the same physical fitness levels of males. Something is amiss there…

Women are giving up the single, greatest attribute that God has given them - their femininity.

And we are now seeing what a detriment to society this is becoming. We no longer have women as the civilizing gender. We now have two manly, macho, tough genders, and our society has become course, vulgar and rude because of it. Women used to be there to make the men better by softening us up alittle, making us deeper thinkers and giving us respite from the tough work that men are often called upon to perform. But today, girls want to be just as tough as the guys, and they want to do men’s work, they want tattoo’s, they drink, smoke, curse and have casual sex like men, they box, wrestle, play football and since many are now in male dominated tough jobs, such as firemen, police, construction, truck driving and soon the infantry, they are fast becoming completely devoid of their femininity. Men are now beginning to treat the ladies like they do other guys.

Yes, women will get their “equality”, there is no stopping them now, but what a price society is going to pay for it…

Your points are well made. The problem people want sameness and call it equality.

Are you unaware that girls aren’t allowed to play full contact football with guys not just in Catholic schools but anywhere? Did you know that the NFL doesn’t have women playing in it with the men? I think most people would have noticed that when watching the recent Super Bowl.

I don’t have a problem with there existing institutions, such as football, where boys are allowed to congregate and be boys on their own. without girls being a part of it.

It is not that there are no girls that are capable of playing football. The masculine bonding that takes place in football, and the development of masculine values that can take place in such gender-specific traditions such as football are something that are good in developing a boy’s character.
There is absolutely no reason that girls need to be into everything that boys are into. There are precious few places left where boys can congregate together as boys, just on their own. Football is one of those few places left that can still pass as a boys club.

Women have proven to the world in the last few generations that there is nothing that they cannot do. They can run the world, for sure. There is not shortage of boys too, shacked up in their basements with their video games and their beer, who are not willing to let women do just that, if that is what they want.
Football is one of those sports that affirms a boys masculinity and encourages boys to be aggressive in socially acceptable ways. It encourages men to be men, and teaches them the values that will get them out of those basements and into positions of leadership, where they will take charge and be encouraged to do just that.

Women lack for nothing in our societies.
Except for men— which is to say those males of the species that are capable of being responsible for them and their families.

But men are not born that way. They are made that way.

Football and other such boys clubs where testosterone and masculinity are encouraged are what make boys into men.

Catholic schools are still aware of this.
👍

I stand corrected on the “type” of automatic rifle. geez louise

It’s ok for men to curse, drink, smoke, get tatoos and visit the “oldest profession” (both male and female) since time began, but that is ok, cause they are “men” and “men” do those things and it’s ok. One confession, and it’s all erased. In the meantime, back in the 40’s and 50’s, men could do all this, and beat the **** out of their wives and boss them around like servants, and that’s ok, cause they are “men”. Women in the 50’s who did have the opportunity to go to college, were not looking for a BS, PHD, , they were looking to get their MRS degree. Just a mere 20 yrs prior, women could not own land, have or earn their own money (if they had inherited money, they had to marry right away so a “man” could manage/squander it:shrug:). My southern great grandmother was a perfect example. Not only could she not vote, she could not own anything. She had to get “permission” from her husband to do most anything. It got worse in the 50’s when all women had to look forward to was shining their white Westinghouse fridge, and beaming with pride at the new Hoover, hubby got them for Christmas. If my husband ever got me a “housework” appliance as gift, he would be wearing it. 😃

In the 70’s women were being told that “man” with an engineering degree, teaching degree, or the manager of a restaurant was entitled to make more money than a women doing the same job with the same qualifications. Really?

I believe there was a small awakening during WWII when the Rosie had to go to the shipyards and learn to rivet and weld. Women were the back bone of WWII. They weren’t home making a pot roast, they were crawling all over ships and aircraft putting them back together again. My grandmother was a Rosie. Her biggest problem was she had to wear “pants” and she hated that idea. Imagine that. But she knew if she wanted to put food on the table for 5 kids, something had to give.

If Danica Patrick at 110 lbs, can race a car around a track, she should be able to. If a women walks into an auto garage and wants to pull engines and repair transmissions and is good at, she should be giving the opportunity. Danica Patrick looks far from “butch”. Danica McKeller could best anyone on this board in the field of Mathematics. Laila Ali and Lucia Rijker have done well in boxing. Not my thing, but I wouldn’t dream on denying them the opportunity. Judith Livers Brewer first “paid” female firefighter. My mother pulled tobacco in the hot SC summer sun along side my grandmother, not an easy task.

If the young woman in the OP has the skill, qualifications, knows the physical and mental risks, she should be able to play. How many perky cheerleaders have been seriously injured throwing each other up in the air only to hit the ground? All sports come with risk, playing boys/men or girls/women come with risks. 🤷

Don’t be in such a hurry to be like a man. We have a lot of faults.Your going to miss out on the beauty of being a woman, and society will pay a high price. God created us with differences for a reason and we are now blurring His reason…

If she plays one of two things is going to happen.
  1. The boys are going to be afraid to hit her because she is a girl and give her a wide berth so she doesn’t get hurt.
  2. She’s going to get lit up and hit hard in order to get her off the field and out of the game.
If it were my team she was playing against, I’d root for choice #2. Girls don’t belong on the football field with boys.

I am a woman of Italian descent, my beauty as a woman is locked and loaded, so is my brain. I have a daughter, when she first started driving, my husband gave her a crash course in, changing a tire, checking the oil, changing the oil and oil filter, filling her washer fluid tank, how to open the the cap on the radiator, how fill transmission fluid, radiator fluid and what type to buy for the car she is driving. It came in handy when she had a flat tire, my 17 yr old (at the time), changed the tire like a pro. Some of your daughters would be waiting on the side of the road for a “man” to do it for her.

My mother taught my sister and I, from day one, “Learn a skill, go to school/college, learn “how to do something”, do not depend on anyone to “do it for you”. I don’t care if it’s tasting pies in a pie factory or sweeping leaves under a hall tree. Get a “marketable” skill, learn and do it well, you made need it to take care of yourself or your family one day.”

The torch has been passed to the females in my family.

This is a whole different subject.

I also have two daughters that know how to take care of themselves, but that is far different than letting them (or wanting them) to play football. They are also in college to learn “how to do something”, so it’s not like I want them to be helpless, but again, this is a different argument.

I do however want them to be woman, to be feminine and not be in competition with men. I would never, ever let them go into my occupation, construction. Simply because the women that I know that are in construction no longer act like women. They are sadly one of the guys with all of the ugliness that can go with that.

I believe that each gender has a role to play in keeping our society on track and within God’s plan. We should be using our strengths to better society, to enhance each other, not fighting to be what we were never meant to be. The gender bending we see going on today has had huge ramifications for our world and if it continues, (which it will of course) the effects on society will be dire.

Look a this from God’s eye, not the worlds…

Rosalyn Carter is far from butch, but I have seen pics of her and many other women putting shingles on rooftops for Habitat for Humanity. I can’t imagine Rosalyn ever using a curse word. Construction is very hard work. I have done it, renovating our house with my husband. You are correct, it wore me slap out, but it had to be done. Hauling trash cans of plaster and lathe gave me good exercise though. 😉 I would not encourage my daughter to play football, as I am well aware of what could happen (basically the same things that the boys go through). I also encouraged her not be a cheerleader, as time and time proves again, they think they are better than everyone else.

If a woman has the qualifications for the job, for the sport, for whatever, she should be allowed to work/play.

Lucia Rijker is definitely a tough woman. One of the few women I know in my heart that has the power combined with a far superior skill to defeat me–and probably in an impressive way.

But no one has been stopping Rijker or the “Coal Miners Daughter” or L. Ali from fighting. Females fight females. Excepted in the case of Rijker and corrupt boxing. But she roundly beat that dude masquerading as a dame (unless that was a real woman that just looks like a man)

I wouldn’t mind sparring either by the way.

I have no problem with all girl schools or all boy schools. I have no problem with grown men in the NFL playing female opponents either. I really don’t. I take that back. I’d probably have a problem with them playing against Latinas of Latin America or most other women of the “Global South.” I don’t care what they do to American women on the field.

I wouldn’t care if between adult American men and women professionally boxing each other became the norm–breaking jaws, throwing hits to each others livers, slicing cuts over each others eyes. I’ve already developed a liking to putting on gloves and punching American men (while being hit), it would just be an added bonus for me if I could throw uppercuts to the bottom jaws of American women, stepping in the ring with me, and like some 300 lbs human gorilla of muscle in a U.S. prison, thinks he or she is going to rape me to death. In each of their hearts they’re smirking and laughing that today they are going to take something from me. But they’re going to be having to be willing to face permanent paralysis or death to accomplish their objective.

One reason why I would never fight my girl (who I admire and like I might add) Lucia Rijker in a real competitive fight. Not unless I knew I was up to the task and had prepared well enough. Then with my shield or on it. I’d accept the outcome.

But Rijker in my mind is not the objective. The 300 lbs gorilla in a U.S. prison (and incarceration in prison is always a possibility) is. Unfortunately, today I can’t train for him. Which means I might be raped. And raped repeatedly, to the cheers of American men and women.

But the young boy still early in his physical development. His mind should be protected. He shouldn’t (though some do) have to worry about being raped, or about bigger girls around him emasculating him publicly while the men around him allow it. For us grown men it is different. If he has not prepared himself for the 300 lbs human gorilla or the female warrior/athlete, then let him taste the cup of defeat, publicly, before the eyes of his sons and his wife.

The Bishops dropped the ball on protecting the minds of young boys with the whole Priest sex scandal thing. Maybe they’ll drop the ball this time or maybe they won’t. That’s up to them.
