If a woman has the qualifications for the job, for the sport, for whatever, she should be allowed to work/play.
Sorry, that doesn’t wash.

First off, women never, ever have to qualify for any job or any sport like a man does. The standards are always lowered, period. You can make believe that the qualifications are the same, but they are not. Physically, women cannot do what men do on a daily basis (and please don’t point out one or two female examples to try and make your point)so for the sake of diversity, the standards are lowered.

Second, just because you believe a women is as qualified as a man, (they are not, see above;))doesn’t mean they should be allowed to do the job. These jobs you think women should do have made women cruder, ruder, and courser. Women in male dominated fields invariably feel compelled to be “one of the guys” and normally act in a way that is quite un feminine. Men, for their part, almost always give these women the easy jobs, such as flagging traffic instead of the jackhammer in construction. Is that fair to the men as they have to pick up the slack? Hardly.

Again, you seem to be looking at this through the worlds eyes instead of God’s eyes. Do you really believe that God wants to see women on the front lines of combat? Or shoveling dirt in construction? Women need to be there to civilize the men, to soften us, to give us comfort, to give us respite from the tough work we do. Where will society be when there is no softer gender? When we are all tough? When we can all kick some serious butt? Hooo-Rahhhh!

Women have been given wonderful gifts from God. I think they should use them…

In order to understand, are you referring to “sports” regarding qualifications or “jobs” as in work?

Both actually.

In work, females are never asked to take the same physical as a man. Standards such as climb height, wall heights, run distances, weight carried etc, etc, are always lowered for women. It happens on every police, fire or military test. If it were the same, 99% of the women would wash out.

In sports, it’s much the same. It is plain and simple, women cannot run as fast, jump higher, hit a ball farther, throw as far etc, etc. As far as boxing or wrestling, an un intimidated male would kill any female in a genuine no holds barred match. But thankfully, most males would never go all out to defeat a women…

And what happens when she DOESN’T grow up into some sort of ultra-muscular mutant that can contend with the physical strength of the guys in pro football?

Water’s wet,the sky is blue and an 11 year-old girl is mad because someone told her “No.” :compcoff:

Most people absolutely reek of false entitlement these days…makes me wish I’d been born in the 1920’s. Sheesh.

It’s a bunch of kids playing a silly little game.

You know what the real problem is? Men don’t act like MEN. Being a man isn’t about being bearded and barrel-chested, walking around swearing, scratching, and farting. Being a man isn’t about being “macho” and tough. Being a man is about being honest, caring, and loving. Look at the men in the church we hold up as models of manhood, like St. Joseph. He finds out Mary is pregnant and what does he do? Does he get all aggressive like a man should and have her hauled out to the city gate and stoned for cheating on him? No, he shows restraint, compassion, and mercy. When the angel appears to Joseph, he listens to the angel and does what God asks. That’s a man!

Men don’t act like men anymore, they act like “guys.” They expect their mates to either be perfect little Stepford wives, in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant or they want them to be little whores, but only for them. But of course it’s okay for those guys to go out and sleep around because, “Hey, we’re guys and that’s what we do.”

I was dumped by one guy because I would’t sleep with him. I was dumped by a guy who said he didn’t like seeing me in pants and that I should wear more skirts and dresses. (I live in North Dakota. It’s winter 18 months out of the year here. You wear a kilt in January and then get back to me about wearing a skirt!) Oh btw, both of those boys were supposed “good Catholic boys” I met at church. One was even in the Knights of Columbus.

Oh, and to jimcav, I work for a real estate agency. Most of my job involves staging houses to be shown to clients. That means moving around heavy furniture all day. None of the guys I work with would ever say that they have to pick up slack for me or that I get the “easy” jobs. And they wouldn’t dare say that I and crude, rude or coarse. They don’t treat me like “one of the guys,” they treat me like a co-worker. Oh, and to say I didn’t have to earn my position? That’s total bunk. I spent twice as long on a probation period as any of my co-workers did. (It wasn’t until I got a new supervisor, who is a man, btw, that I even learned about that.) Why did I take the job? Because they work with my school schedule. I’m not out to prove anything. I’m not out to compete with a man. It’s because it’s practical. And if a man feels “emasculated” because of that, well, too bad.

Pollynova - it looks like you’re a dedicated and creative employee. Staging homes for sale requires a good eye for symmetry and that’s not one of my strong points (as long as my guitar cases haven’t fallen over I’m good to go).

I’m sorry to read that your relationships with men whose values and perspectives are very different from yours keep ending badly. Men such as what you describe as your ideal (“he shows restraint, compassion, and mercy”) are certainly present in the Church. Perhaps they see your choices of men to date and assume that’s the type of man you prefer. I wonder if a change in your approach might make you less appealing to those men you don’t want and more appealing to those you do.

As for opening up boys’ sports teams for girls; I wonder if it would help if adult females were willing to open up the many female specific professional associations to male participation.

If she plays one of two things is going to happen.
  1. The boys are going to be afraid to hit her because she is a girl and give her a wide berth so she doesn’t get hurt.
  2. She’s going to get lit up and hit hard in order to get her off the field and out of the game.
If it were my team she was playing against, I’d root for choice #2. Girls don’t belong on the football field with boys.
So you would prefer an 11 year old girl gets injured rather than play a stupid little game?

I don’t actually date all that much. And those 2 guys never even met each other.

I’m not a feminist. I believe a wife should be submissive to her husband. But I don’t believe that a woman should be submissive to a man though. And some random guy on the internet isn’t going to tell me he knows best about being feminine.

My foster grandmas both grew up on farms and worked them just as hard as their brothers did. And that continued when they got married. They drove tractors and trucks, hauled hay bales, fed pigs, delivered calves, and got just and dirty and sweaty as their husbands did. (And sometimes while pregnant!) And they certainly didn’t wear skirts when they were working. Were they not feminine? No, they are models of womanhood, caring for and providing for their families. And they would never stand for some jerk saying they somehow weren’t feminine because of it, and I know for darn sure my grandpas wouldn’t put up with it either.

They point is, they weren’t trying to be like men, they were doing what they needed to do for their families. Nowadays, it’s even more expensive to raise kids and just to live in general. Why shouldn’t a woman go for a high paying job, even if it’s in a so-called male-dominated field?

I am a wrestling referee, and I guarantee you that there are no lowered standards for girls in wrestling. They have to make weight the same way as their male counterparts do, and they go out onto the mat on an equal basis. They have to compete for a spot on the team in the same way as the boys do.

Generally girls start out in rec wrestling following in their big brothers’ footsteps, and many of them are just as good, if not better than their male counterparts. As they get older, they generally don’t have the upper body strength that the boys do, and may of them drop out. However, for those that want to compete in high school, they should be free to do so. The boys I know who have girls on their teams are supportive of them and they wrestle them just as hard as they do the boys.

Wrestling is a super-tough sport, and I admire anyone who participates, male or female.

Absolutely.

For the record, I find that today’s cheerleading activities are far more dangerous than they were years ago, and I wouldn’t want my daughter competing in some of those either. And that’s a ‘women’s’ activity!

My daughters competed in lacrosse and baseball; one is now a certified instructor in fitness. My son was on the football team.

When one of my daughters was 13 she played in a ‘mixed’ football league and she enjoyed it, but the league only lasted for maybe 3 games before it dissolved. Why? Because even though the girls were ‘capable’ and enjoyed the game, once it got into actual ‘league’ play, it wasn’t satisfying. It seemed that with every single play there was a coach, or a parent, or another player, calling into question (not just with the girls). . .my daughter said, “Mom, this isn’t about football, it’s all about power and politics. They don’t care about us playing at all.”

I wouldn’t be surprised if the diocese weren’t facing a lot of this same thing, coaches and parents who are more interested in using the children as pawns in a power play, and NOT in letting the children simply play a game.

It’s a bunch of kids playing a silly little game.

I hope you know this feminist point actually evidence my point about feminism. From the most objective and egalitarian point being a man is biological and contingent on having a Y chromosome. That it. Nothing else.

The social constructs of being “a man” or being “a lady” are social constructs and not something biologically heritable.

In general–at least culturally in the United States (I can’t speak for every country on earth)–a female becomes “a woman” when she has her first menstruation. Her womanhood can never be lost or ever taken away from her.

It is different for males in U.S. culture. Being “a man” is attained only through social and economic accomplishments. It’s also contingent on not being raped by a man or other sexual humiliations. Every boy on earth learns–repeatedly through explicit messages from females and males–that they can lose their manhood at any point and time.

We usually term this process and phenomenon as “emasculation.”

But my point about the use of combat sports like football in developing young boys, is that life is Darwinian, and that means violence is apart of life. Discrimination as well. Sexual selection is discriminatory in its process and not egalitarian. But its kind of like a gun. When and how you use a gun is a question. We can teach young boys that you shoot males and females in mass shootings. Or we can teach them you only use a gun to shoot one or more persons that are attempting to gravely injure you or another person etc. So, like wise combat sports like football can be used to teach and develop young boys about things like perseverance under physical pain and under challenging weather conditions. It can be used to teach them a particular cultural conception of “fair play” when meeting another male in violence and competition. Male chimpanzees for example, routinely beat female chimpanzees, and when two or more male chimpanzees meet in battle it can by human conceptions be quite barbaric.

So, you can teach boy football players to win by gouging other players eyes while they lay tackled (some NFL players have been known to do that actually). Punching or kicking other males in the testicles as hard as you can. You can create a football sport like that. Just like you can create life and death gladiatorial games for the entertainment of a nations citizens.

In American football certain rules have been created. So too in boxing at gyms in communities and folk-style wrestling organized in high schools. Martial arts often instructs in more life and death barbarism that would be more applicable to a chimpanzee fight (ripping testicles off, biting etc.) or gladiatorial fight were your losing means you die. But even martial arts instructs with a philosophy and goal that tries to instil in pupils a respects for life (of others) and avoiding and/or declining battle when possible. Football, wrestling, and boxing not so much.

I would agree football is a “stupid sport” in the sense it is Darwinian and earthly and created on ideas of gender constructs of what being “manly” is (e.g., enduring pain, clobbering other successfully etc.), and not when contrasted with heaven, a promotion of peace, serenity, freedom from violence and aggression, the community of saints.

And that last paragraph really underpins all the base philosophy that are behind my comments in this thread. And I’m used to violence. My former social worker (very bright and strong woman I might add–American as well and reared Catholic, though I suspect pretty liberal and non-practicing like myself) surprised me when in in response to my comment to her, “I can’t imagine never living the rest of my life not under the threat of violence.” And I’m rather nonchalant about it as I’ve made my peace with it. To some degree at least.

I trained in boxing motivated out of fear. Just about everything I’ve ever done has been motivated by fear of something or another. Fear of starvation, fear of violence, fear of social exclusion, fear of A, B, C, D…Z. I was too small to play football. But I played it because I wanted to do “a manly” thing and better position myself for a chance of some social popularity. Life is Darwinian like that. Females have in general–not in all environments of the U.S.–and I’m not talking about gritty Bronx chicks, have been given the grace and blessing of the escape hatch males don’t have. Because their womanhood is permanent and can’t be taken away. Society does not ask girls (in general again) to be violent and play violent things like football or boxing to better position themselves in sexual selection.

You know what the real problem is? Men don’t act like MEN.
So, the question arises from both a psychological and philosophical perspective as to why a girl wants to box a male, not as sparring or training to improve her abilities, but in a public competition? Boxing in particular seems to draw a lot of boys and young men from hard fought, hard won, hard loss environments and biographies. That girl may be stepping into a ring with a young 25 year old man that was sexually molested by an older male for years in his childhood. When she steps to him, and by doing so basically says, “I want to fight you violently and take what you have,” what do you think is going to go through his mind? He’s fought hard for years to protect his masculinity. You think he’s just going to lay down? For her this may be “just a game,” but him this battle is far more serious. When he sees her face in the ring he sees that of the older male that raped, sodomized, and emasculated him for years. He will try to take her head of with every shot. Beat her kidneys and liver so hard she’ll be peeing blood afterwards. And pro-fighters often lose teeth. So, she stays in long enough in pro boxing she may lose a tooth or more. Maybe need dentures in her 30s.

She stays in pro football (a very rare woman could even survive college football or just make it on the team–very few American women are taller than me and I am by statistical standards a short American male, though I’m about average male height in Brazil). There are other anatomical (physiological too) difference between adult males and adult females too. Don’t like it? Take it up with science. Fat distribution is usually one visible difference between adult males and females. Usually men don’t collect fat disproportionately around their hips and buts like women typically do.

Among prepubescent children the physical differences between males and females are often times negligible. Just yesterday in an anatomy class I asked a TA (he’s in archeology, a branch of anthropology, and not biology) if the sectioned skull he was showing some of us, was that of a females. Given its “gracile” (slender etc.) features I thought it was a females. He quickly responded it was the skull of a child so we have no idea what sex the child was. Males that have gone through puberty typically have more “robust” (thicker, bigger etc.) skeletal feature than females hat have gone through puberty. One difference is found in the superorbital region (eyebrow area of the skull). Males generally protrude more. And of course… everyone knows the differences in male and female shoe sizes (feet). Even at 5’6" or 5’7" I have shoe size ranging (depending on brand of shoe) from size 9 to 11. Usually 10 or 10 1/2.

Female skin and hair are typically different from males too. Again… that is coming from my science class and not from religion or politics.

Now see… I’m not a feminist and I don’t think wives should (as in ought or need to be) be submissive to their husbands.
My foster grandmas both grew up on farms and worked them just as hard as their brothers did. And that continued when they got married. They drove tractors and trucks, hauled hay bales, fed pigs, delivered calves, and got just and dirty and sweaty as their husbands did. (And sometimes while pregnant!) By black grandparents came from Mississippi. Were they were both sharecroppers. My German-American grandparents came from the farmers–I believe both in Wisconsin.

I think the Western world is confused bout sex. Largely because political ideologies inform the discussion and not the natural sciences and social sciences.

Gender is understood by both sociology and the Catholic Church to be a different concept than biological sex. Most people–including most feminist–think of them as one and the same. So, when they see gender contradictions it gives the appearance that there are no differences between the two biological sexes.

Since most liberal people are enamored with East Asian wisdom let me attempt to explain the gender constructs of “masculinity” and “femininity” as Yin/Yang. Complimentaries of differences. Or one could describe them as hetero (different) vs homo (same).

Womanhood is even a different social construct than being “lady like.” The former can never be lost by a female once she has her first period. In U.S. culture. But the latter can be lost by a woman, though U.S. culture is gentle enough on women that the loss is not permanent but can be reattained. Not so with manhood. Manhood can only be acquired by social and economic accomplishment and can be lost at any given moment. In fact, a man’s manhood as a concept is perpetually under attack by other men and by women as well.

In contemporary America taking someone’s manhood is hailed as heroic and cheered by a gladiatorial audience drunk with enthusiasm. The OP of this thread carries the tone in title as well as in diction that of which is a bit drunken with this same enthusiasm.

With females playing combat sports with males. This is philosophically something of a figurative homosexuality or lesbianism. They are two sames. The idea then to contradict it with a conception of masculinity that espouses, “Men don’t hit women,” or “Boys should not hit girls,” becomes illogical and intellectual indefensible. If men fight men then they should fight women too. Darwinian, figuratively homosexual.

Your experiences with Catholic men just evidence that religion is in general rather meaningless. As an indicator of how the person is.

Sex is a very strong drives for animal life. So is food. It tends to be a much stronger drive for men. Something few females respect but don’t mind manipulating. It never ceases to amaze me how some feminists and others advocate homosexuality is only biologically driven, can’t be repressed, but that the male sex drive is mostly just psychologically caused and can be repressed.

But most American men don’t expect women or their wives to be bare foot and pregnant. Actually, American men usually bend over backwards to appease women. So much so they got the bright idea to let girls play football with boys.

Football is not volleyball or chess or golf. Just like bayoneting people, planting landmines, tossing grenades at people. One wonders why a females wants to do these things. I think I have a reasonable answer. Like boys and men girls and women are social creatures. Humans are. And being social creatures we watch on TV or on the sidelines what others in out culture are doing and we say to ourselves, “I want to join in on that.”

There was no noble reason I joined the Marine Corps. Like all Marines I joined to become part of a perceived, elite “bad___” group. Killing people–legally so I might add—seemed like a totally cool, Darwinian, thing that would help place me higher in the sexual selection process. That’s why I didn’t become a monk or a priest. That’s why I never attempted to become a male cheerleader.

Truth be told I wish life wasn’t Darwinian and males weren’t expected or encouraged to do violent things. I’d prefer if the world promoted “sissy” conduct of men and football and boxing did not exist as sports.

It says a lot about American women that they want to shoot people, plant bombs to blow off the limbs of children and adults, and play football with part of the goal to be to injure your opponents on the opposite team. That they want to box men (knowing full well emasculation is a real construct in our society), that is punch them in the face and body repeatedly, it says a lot about American women.

I also find it interesting I don’t want (wish there was a greater way out, a nonexistence of these things) to do these things but through social and gender pressures have found little option to do otherwise. Or at least… the options that exist are less attractive. I could play hopscotch or jump rope with girls. But the social consequences of that are not too attractive. So, I jump rope or “skip rope” only for boxing and/or exercise.

Amen brother!:blessyou:

Pearls of wisdom abound in that post. It will give the ladies much to ponder!🙂

Maybe you need to stop worrying about the world expects of you and start worrying about what God expects of you.

You know what? If some boy is emasculated because he gets beat by girl, then he’s got serious issues already. And it’s not that girl’s responsibility to make sure he grows up secure in his manhood.

Oh, and as for “womanhood” never being taken away, that is such bull it makes my ears burn. Women are judged CONSTANTLY and have to live up to unbelievably high standards to be seen as a “real” woman! You can’t be too fat, because no one like a fat girl. You can’t be too thin either because no man wants a girl with the body of a 12 year old boy. If you wear tight clothes, you’re a slut. Wearing makeup, then you’re just trying to impress someone. Don’t wear makeup, then you don’t care about yourself. If you wear frumpy clothes, you’re a prude. If you talk too much, you’re a flirt. Talk to little, and you’re stuck up. If you’re vocal about your opinions, you’re a b****. Keep your opinions to yourself, then you’re a dumb girl. Don’t have a boyfriend or a husband, then you’re a lesbian. Married? Then why don’t you have kids? Go look at all the threads in on the family and parenting boards and see all the women who don’t feel complete because they are infertile. How much of that is because they hear everyday how you HAVE have kids to be a “real” woman.

If she doesn’t pursue a football career, there is always sports medicine, or broadcasting.🤷
Certainly, if she doesn’t take too many concussions from trying to compete with people who are much stronger, physically speaking, than she is.
Or scientist, or physicist, or President of the US.
Yup. Said nothing about scientists, physicists, or the Presidency. Why even bring them up? No context in this discussion, none at all.
