But it DOES change what you do about it. Surely most Catholic women use birth control banned by the Church because they either don’t believe it’s a sin at all, or believe it’s not as grave a sin as others do. 🤷
That does not change the fact that it is a grave sin. And if they freely consent to using artificial contraceptives knowing that it is contrary to what the Church teaches it is a mortal sin.

Hindsight is 20/20. We know now the Church never approved slavery but to someone living at the time it would seem that it had.
Perception doesn’t equal truth.
(d) God has always approved contraception, and the teaching authority of his Church has taught this even if some of her members did not.
You see, The Church only seemingly condemned contraception just as it only seemingly condoned slavery.
You think the Church has only “seemingly” condemned contraception? Can you cite documents of the Church that condone contraception?

Note that the fact that its members sin does not mean that the Church “seemingly” does anything. She teaches the truth and it is up to her members to follow that truth. In the case of contraception, many choose to do what is easy instead of what is right, to their own detriment.

So if a woman decides that an abortion is the best decision for her family, you consider that a moral and correct choice?

Irrelevant, as truth is truth even if other religions don’t recognize it.

How sad that they feel they must sin in order to space their pregnancies.

And thank God for that… otherwise you’d find us saying “abortion is a blessing” just like the Episcopalians.

They are wrong on both counts.
Hey, maybe they just don’t know the truth? Maybe they don’t want to hear it the way it’s being told? Maybe if they were guided by someone who acknowledged and empathized with their fears and anxieties, and taught them with compassion, they might see the light? Who knows? All I know is that most Catholics use ABCs, and you can’t talk to them about if you put them on th defensive, let alone convince them to take chance, and a leap in faith, in what you have to tell them about it.

As to people of other religions, the Catholic truth is irrelevent to them, as their views are irrelevent to you. That’s why they’re not Catholic. That’s why they have their own truth, which isn’t affected by the truths taught by the Church.

I think that’s evidenced by the fact that many people (including my parents) were told by their family priest that ABCs were a matter of conscience…another woman I know was told by her pastor that she was given a special dispensation for a tubal ligation (the pastor, through his church of course, was giving the family money to help raise their kids, and this he told her, after she announced her 8th pregnancy).

People forget that clergy are just human like everyone else, and they have different personalities like everyone else. You’re going to have the fire-and-brimstone priests who pound on the pulpit about every sin he might think another person will ever encounter. And then on the opposite side of the spectrum you will have priests who completely symathize with their parishioners and can’t stand to watch them suffer…so they’ll bend the rules to help them…🤷
It cannot be denied that many false teachings were promulgated, especially after Vat II. Are there dissident and unfaithful priests? Oh, absolutely, but for those with ears to hear, and eyes that see, there is no excuse!
“As adults we cannot claim that the Church’s moral truths are unavailable to us … It has never been easier to access the wisdom of the Church on issues of life and chastity –
U.S. bishops’ publication urges priests to preach on contraception, sterilization, IVF

But it DOES change what a person does about it. Surely most Catholic women use birth control banned by the Church because they either don’t believe it’s a sin at all, or believe it’s not as grave a sin as others do. This fact won’t change until the person in question acknoledges that using ABCs to contracept is a sin. It starts there. So while you think the way people believe, feel, or think about something is irrelevent. It is relevent to them and guides their actions (and inaction). And a person will not stop contracepting until they know and acknowedge what the Church teaches. It’s not a mortal sin if they don’t understand the teaching.

For those with ears to hear and eyes to see, I might agree with you. Bu you have to reach them first. But not everyone has ears that will listen simply becaue they don’t believe they are sinning in the first place, and their eyes won’t see simply because they don’t believe they are sinning. If you don’t believe you’re doing something wrong, why would you listen to someone who tells you that you are? especially when it makes such a profound impact on your ife? If someone told you that YOU were sinning due to an action or inaction that is part of your everyday life, YOU would not listen to that person unless they shared the same values as you have. Women contracepting are not easily going to listen to someone who will basically turn their lives upside down. They think they’re right. They think they have the truth. Just like you think/believe/know you have the truth. It’s odd to me why someone would think or believe in the truths they hold dear but would not think another person would hold their own truths, values and beliefs as dear as well.

That’s the thing: Protestant’s don’t have their own truth. There is only one truth. To claim otherwise would violate the principle of non-contradiction.

Everything that is true in Protestantism came from the Catholic Church.

Totally agree with you. Which is why I will be using some form of artificial birth control after this pregnancy is completed. 🤷
I think it is more likely that many Catholics understand what the Church teaches and simply disagree. Not all disobedience is from obstinence or ignorance or weakness - sometime it is a good faith disagreement.

Actually, “that’s the thing” for you and others like you (practicing Catholics of course). It stops there for you, but not for others. In the real world, as important as the truths as taught by the Church is to you, that’s how important the truthful teachings of another faith are important to a person of another faith. They are not any less valid than your own. You are just blessed to be Catholic. They, on the other hand, feel blessed that they are not Catholic. And,yes, Protestants have the truth. They have the truth as presented by their faith. It’s not any less valid just because you don’t afford them the same importance. But I’m betting they feel the same way about you, the Church, and the Truths as taught by the Church too though 🙂

Well, Janesansible can correct me if I’m wrong, but obviously Janesanible doesn’t believe it is a mortal sin…otherwise she wouldn’t be doing it.
While I disagree with 1holycatholics posting methodology, he is correct in his assesment of what she is doing objectivly speaking. This comes down to what I posted earlier, “if you do it with a clear contience, it’s not a sin”. Oh really? Does that really add up?

She’s wrong. I know according to the let’s be charitable wing of Catholicism that we should never never never point out to someone when they are sinning lest we hurt their feelings and having read your post I guess helping them to rationalize their sin is also okay . I’m beginning to feel like I have fallen into a bizarro version of the Pirates of the Caribbean “well they are not really rules, they are more like guidelines”

I’m afraid that is just another version of the primacy of conscience argument. The catechism makes clear that willfull ignorance does not excuse sin regardless of how clear you may feel your conscience is.

Anything that differs from the teaching of the Catholic Church on faith and morals is objectively false.

Perception is not reality. Nominalism does not create objective reality.

Oh, okay. I didn’t know that all we had to do to keep ourselves out of mortal sin, was just don’t believe what we are doing is a mortal sin…cool…be right back; I need some cash just going to swing over to the bank and steal some. I don’t believe it’s a mortal sin, so it’s all good!

That logic doesn’t work! You can believe that your cat is a dog, but at the end of the day, it’s still a cat!

I’m so sorry. I hope you realize that such an action will place you in a state of sin, and it will place you in mortal sin if you know that it is wrong and do it anyway. Do you think it is wise to place yourself in a state of mortal sin?

Before you make that decision, I encourage you to read the following:

Contraception: Why Not? by Dr. Janet Smith

Why would you post that you plan on committing mortal sin?
I am posting because I think a lot of Catholics are not being honest when they say they openly flout Church teaching on contraception. All of the Catholic women here at work have had sterilizations and I am sure went right to confession and now in their minds all is right in the world.

I am pregnant because I tried NFP. A child is a blessing but I certainly do not want another one any time soon. It’s a fact that I cannot afford.

The Church gives you a thumbs up for having a large family but there is no support outside of that whether from day care, to cheaper schools or anything (no offense but Protestants do a much better job helping families).

I don’t WANT to flout Church teaching but I gave NFP a go. I’m sure lots of Catholics out there are not HAPPY about making this choice but there is no help out there for them when they do.

I just want to say that many out there are at different places on their spiritual path. I am just frankly not strong enough physically or emotionally to put my trust in the Lord when it comes to openess to life. I am so stressed as it is by this pregnancy. I am really happy when other people have that kind of faith. I do not doubt it exists. I just don’t have it.
