It sounds like a great way to make a child dread going to Mass to me. I’m not saying it doesn’t “work”, but just because something gets a desired result doesn’t make it ok in my opinion.I was waiting for someone to pick up on that.
Look, I’m not saying to do that in every single circumstance so don’t overreact. Every parent that has spanked a child knows the difference between actually inflicting pain and a whack to bring the child to “Focus”. That is what we have had to do with “ONE” of our children. She (when she was around 4 yrs old) was very stuborn and hardheaded. So a whack, hard enough to get her attention but not enough to inflict any real pain. You may find it hard to believe, but when this was done, it only took two or three times and she got it. In her mind it was, behave after this “Warning shot over the bow” or something else is coming. After that she did fine. No more spanking of any kind. Problem solved.
btw, it has been “YEARS” since we have had to spank a child for mis-behaving in Mass. Even when it was done, it was the exception rather than the norm. Siblings tend to follow siblings, if all are behaving (which 99% of the time they behave) it doesn’t happen.
