May be going back to the hospital. Throat very swollen. Something definitely in there. Trying to find out if I need to go to the ER or if I can wait til tomorrow.

Nothing staying down altho I’m better than I was. Not going to attempt 🥘 again til the swelling is completely gone. I knew it was too soon even for mashed 🥔.

Propel 💦 is all I can handle - barely.

Thanks, Sarcelle. I have x-rays scheduled for Monday unless I have them taken sooner due to this happening.

I’m really sorry to hear about this latest issue with your throat, Lily.

I hope that this gets resolved soon.

Please let us know how you’re doing.

God bless you! ❤️

You’re in my thoughts and prayers, too.

When my surgeon gave me the okay to try a few foods, he said if this kind of thing happened, to stop eating the food that caused it. So that’s what I’m going to have to do. The swelling obviously hasn’t gone down enough to eat some of the foods he wanted me to try. So I will stay away from them awhile longer.

I’m going in tomorrow to have my throat looked at just to make sure it’s okay. Ordinarily, I would’ve gone in immediately. But since the potatoes came out without reflux and my throat started to relax after that, I was told I could wait unless it gets worse or happens again in which case, I have to get to the ER immediately.

I am drinking a few sips of Propel water each time I wake up. But I’m mainly just trying to sleep it off.

Depending on what happens tomorrow, I thought I’d either get some ice cream or popsicles to calm my throat down. Both are on my list as liquids. We’ll see.

For our dinner tonight we had chicken Kievs that were stuffed with dressing. I made some green peas and baked russet potatoes as side dishes.

I’ve been drinking some cranberry water drink.

A nice salad, oven-fried potatoes, a fresh wheat roll, and leftovers - the last of Sunday’s smoked brisket and yesterday’s fried chicken…cranberry juice to drink.

Ok so far. Have drunk water without any problems. If I try food, it’ll just be jello. After yesterday, I’m afraid to have anything else.

Update. My throat is fine. Swelling just hasn’t gone down enough on the one side to eat more than one or two bites with the baby spoon. Have to wait an hour after swallowing the second bite.

Was originally told I could try meat this week. Because the swelling hasn’t gone down as fast as the other side and food is catching in that side of my throat, I’m to wait til my previously scheduled appointment in late October to try potatoes again. And of course, no meat til I can swallow the mashed potatoes.

I am to continue with my liquid diet until then. Was told I could try the eggs (scrambled or fried) if I thought I could handle them. Can have jello, ice cream (plain), cream of chicken soup and the liquids I’ve been on. Was told not to attempt anything new until after my October appointment.

Thank you, Autumn-Smoke. I need all the prayers I can get.

I was planning on getting popcorn, my fav. And while I may still get it, I can’t eat it until my swelling goes down.

Green salad, blue cheese dressing, fried chicken, mashed potatoes and a banana

Thanks for the update, Lily.

Again, I’m sorry that this has happened, and that it has also caused a delay for you too, in when you can go back to eating more solid foods.

I’m glad to know though, that you’re alright. ❤️

Normally, when a hiatal hernia is repaired, the patient can go back to a regular diet after 2 or 3 weeks, depending on the procedure performed. Mine was more complex with the possibility of more surgery later. The x-rays on Monday will determine whether more surgery is performed and when.

I lived on Slim-Fast and tomato soup from the time I was twelve till I was sixteen. I was so anxious due to the pressure to perform (voice lessons) perfectly, that I couldn’t even swallow ice cream. A strawberry seed in ice cream was “too much.” Eating at a restaurant was out of the question unless they had tomato soup!

It’s not much fun to live on liquids, but I know it can be done. The upside of living on liquids for four years is that I have a very small appetite now and never overeat. I eat only to stay alive. I never live to eat. Since I’m only five feet tall and small boned, small portions are important.

It probably takes years to develop a very small appetite, but there can be an upside! :You stay small. 🙂

Good luck with your recovery, Lily! I hope you can move to solids soon. Southern food is the best! (I do like biscuits and gravy even though I can’t eat much till I’m full.)

I had a detoxifying mint and cacao smoothie.

I know what you mean about the liquids. I did that too. Slim Fast was wonderful except it had to be mixed with milk. They didn’t come out with the ready made shakes until later.

My problem was I felt so good about my weight loss that I kept going and going and going to the point where I ended up with anorexia. No knew what that was at the time. When you have it, you don’t see your bones and your ribs. You still see your fat self. The day of Karen Carpenter’s death, I looked at myself in the mirror and see what everyone else saw for the first time. I burst into tears and started eating again.

The fear of the anorexic me resurfacing is why I want to eat solid food again. I see signs of it happening because when I was told I’d lost 20 lbs due to just having the liquids, I thought, “And if I stay on the liquids, I can lose 20 more and then 20 more and…”

The temptation not to eat is so strong. But I’m lucky. My surgeon knows about my past with anorexia. And I’m being closely monitored. That’s one reason yesterday’s episode with the mashed potatoes needed to be reported and seen to. It was important to them to make sure my throat was okay and important to me that they see I wasn’t refusing to eat.

Anyway, I am counting my blessings and will stick to the liquids as long as I have to while taking each day as it comes and seeing if my throat can handle food. Yes, I’m a foodie. But like you, I eat to live not live to eat.

Cranberry juice and watermelon water tonight.
