So morality is based solely on how we feel about something we’ve done? If I kill my neighbor is it okay as long as it does not cause depression or low self-esteem?
No, you are entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts. So if you were to say: “abortion is bad because it causes depression” you would be wrong.

What the article says is that adolescents that have had abortions are no more depressed and suffering from low self-esteem than adolescents that were pregnant and kept the baby. However, one of the researchers tipped their hat and admitted that the girls that kept their babys were more depressed and suffering from lower self-esteem than the average adolescent. So this the argument being made isn’t that abortion doesn’t cause depression, but that the depression it causes is no worse than that of an adolescent that kept a baby … from my point of view hardly a recommendation for a procedure, let alone the fact that a life ends in this process.

Well, this study apparently contradicts some other studies:

theunchoice.com/News/lateabortionstudy.htm - Later Abortions More Likely to Be Unwanted, Are Linked to Psychological Problems

afterabortion.org/news/motalmentalhealthstudy.html - New Study Affirms Link Between Abortion and Subsequent Mental Health Problems

Here is some of the percentages from the second article:

Women who had abortions also had:
  • Code:
59 percent increased risk for suicidal thoughts
  • Code:
61 percent increased risk for mood disorders
  • Code:
61 percent increased risk for social anxiety disorders
  • Code:
261 percent increased risk for alcohol abuse
  • Code:
280 percent increased risk for any substance use disorder
So yeah, basically the whole premise that abortion does not cause depression and other psychiatric disorders is nothing more than a bunch of bull hockey! Don’t believe the studies which are led by those in the pro-abortion industry. They have an agenda to promote and will promote it at all costs!:mad:😦

Yeah, instead of Planned Parenthood’s flawed Propaganda (the “National study”), I know better. Here’s a better study:

clinicquotes.com/site/story.php?id=149

Like the thread that was merged with this one, most women who have an abortion-it’s their first pregnancy. Interrupting the first pregnancy’s hormones in the first trimester-increases the woman’s chance for breast cancer later.

Planned Parenthood’s goal was for each girl to have 2 abortions by the time she was 18 (former abortionist turned pro-Life revealed).

Satan makes abortion sound like it’s actually “good” for you.
The Prince of Lies again.

All the women I’ve known who have had abortions (and I know many) are nothing like this study (OP). Not one of them would’ve fit in here-they’re all guilt-ridden messes. Two were rendered sterile, never to have children again. They’re all ashamed of what they’ve done. Each knew they had done wrong.

Oh well. The battle continues for souls.

God Bless.

A single study is hardly a basis to generalize these findings to the whole population, even if the data does lead them to this conclusion.

The study also has no bearing on the morality of abortion. Regardless of whether it causes or does not cause depression, it is still immoral. (I can actually see adolescents not being depressed because of abortion, particularly if they have been taught that it’s okay).

Almost amusing.

In this utterly depraved society, we have substituted ‘facts’ for immutible Truth.

So many people are working to advance Satan’s agenda.

None of those studies contradict this one. The mental health studies compared women who had abortions to the general population. The originally posted study compared them to other young women with pregnancies they carried to term. The original study points out that merely being pregnant at a young age causes emotional problems, and concludes that abortion does not exacerbate these problems.

Interesting that the studies you cited were all 20-30 years old; I would imagine that the safety of the procedure has improved over the years.

This is why abortion activists have limited success. They are willing to believe anything that casts abortion in a bad light regardless of its scientific validity. They say to themselves “abortion is a moral evil and therefore it must cause all sorts of physical problems.” This is of course a non-sequitur which abortion proponents find easy to exploit. For example, If they can show that pro-life groups are wrong about the mental health effects of abortion, they make the entire pro-life case appear flimsy.

And the point of this thread is?
Don’t tell people that abortion causes depression because that is wrong. Unless you have better evidence, telling someone that abortion causes depression is a lie. If you do make this claim, and the other person is informed, he/she may be able to point out that you are wrong and you (along with the pro-life position) will look dumb.

Abortion is his crown jewel, and we’re supposed to be surprised by headlined, reports (fooled) like these?

Please, don’t hide behind the ‘authority’ of scientific research to condescend to the pro-lifers…have you ever been familiar with research methods behind these studies, especially in this respective field. Sometimes the declaration of “scientific validity” (from articles like these) itself is MUTABLE even those trained in basic research courses know and experience that.

The long short of the matter is. Have you ever met someone who has had an abortion? Actions have consequences, don’t feed us this cp**.
For example, If they can show that pro-life groups are wrong about the mental health effects of abortion, they make the entire pro-life case appear flimsy.
Heh. No it doesn’t. Pro-life cause is on the side of truth. If killing babies, has no effect on the consciences of mothers, that doesn’t necessarily lead to the conclusion, that those who believe killing babies are wrong, are politically compromised because (purportedly) society states that there are no psychological effects.

Some just don’t get it. There could be a thousand more reports of scientific questionnaires declaring, that all mothers who’ve had an abortion since 2002, felt no psychological effect or had no remorse, or depression or difficulties in living their lives.
The act, of terminating their baby’s life, is no less heinous today, than it was when the reports were saying mothers were effected.

This isn’t some game, where Pro-Lifers/Anti-Abortion are thinking up arguments to collect on why , just on the bases of abstract extrapolations on the assumption that abortion is a neutral medical practice to target.
To call the pro-life case , flimsy is to not know the weight of truth, that this is a fundamental issue. To be against abortion, is a testament of having one’s priorities straight.

The only problem is that the conclusion based on the study you provided is not supported by the study due to the small sample size (as noted in the study). So, in reality this is a Seinfeld thread (i.e. A thread about nothing).

Okay, would you like it to be rephrased? Sins of grave matter committed by someone can increase the chances of the person committing that sin to have depression. I really do not think that abortion is the only sin that causes depression, it just may be the only one where depression may show itself later. We already know that premarital sex increases the chances of depression, the coveting another’s goods (envy) can increase the chances of depression, so is it really far fetched to know that murder (in whatever form) would also increase the chances of depression?

And as another poster asked, have you ever met someone who had an abortion? Everyone I know who has and has not sought forgiveness are still on self-destructive mode at ages where youth is no longer an excuse. And when I bring up to them that they have children in Heaven praying for them, they ask me not to say that because it makes them sad. But then again, my intimate study is a few numbers shy of the study posted here.

What the study authors actually do note is that adolescents that have had abortions are no more depressed than adolescents that carried a baby to full term. The study does note that they have known for a very long time, and accept as fact, that adolescents that have had babies are more depressed and suffer from lower self-esteem than adolescents that never became pregnant.

That is a long way from saying abortion doesn’t cause depression. It seems to me that something is fundamentally disordered when medical science is trying to pass off as a good thing the thought that at least they aren’t more depressed. In my opinion this study only confirms what others have been saying even if they don’t want to read the evidence that way.

My personal poll is out of the 5 woman I know who have had abortions, all over 10 to 20 years post abortive.
2 -are currently severely depressed and leading crazy dysfuntional lives. 2- I can only decribe are extremely lonely and looking to fill up their lives with distractions. Only 1 of the 5 ever sought forgiveness and now lives a somewhat peaceful life.

It a small study but it works for me.

Maybe you need to ask whether determining the truth of moral issues should be above your pay grade.

The conclusion is supported despite the small sample size, albeit less strongly.

I have not commented on the morality of abortion. I am saying that using flimsy evidence to oppose abortion is counter productive.

But how do you know if they had, for example, put the kids up for adoption they wouldn’t be “extremely lonely and looking to fill up their lives with distractions.” The bottom line, as mentioned in the study, is that having a pregnancy when you are young is a scary and traumatic experience, and very few of the possible outcomes are good. Even if a woman puts a baby up for adoption there can still be lingering doubts: “did I do the right thing?” “Is the baby happy with the new family?” “Could I have managed to take care of him/her?” Merely stating that you know people who have had abortions that are messed up does not mean they are worse off than other young mothers who did not have abortions.
