Due to our societly of handouts everyone thinks they are entitled to a free ride. So what do they do? Sue every time a thought crosses thier mind. And since our Judical system is set up to protect the week, almost always they get a settlement at least
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Sorry, your rhetoric may have convinced YOU, but if you have ever had an experience with an incompetent baffoon who practices medicine you will see WHY some people sue.
Matter of fact there are some doctors who should be working at McDonalds but that’s an insult to people who work at McDonalds.
It’s amazing how reductionist people are such as the poster who made that silly statement. Just wait until YOU have something happen to one of yours because of someone’s incompetence.
Of course maybe you are one of those types who believe doctors should not be responsible when they REALLY screw up.

lilyofthevalley,

Say you own a home in the snowbelt. Say a bad snowstorm comes your way and you dutifully shovel your front walk. Your sidewalk is wet after you shovel, then later the temps drop and the sidewalk takes on a coating of ice. Later, a neighbor then walks across your portion of the sidewalk and falls on the ice and breaks their arm.

Should you be liable for not having done a “competent” job of clearing your sidewalk? Why yes or why no?

Is it fair to expect perfection?

Thank you Mac,

It is comforting to hear the first compliment I have ever heard on this forum towards Canada on any issue. Yes, our medical system is not perfect but we can be assured of being treated in a hospital whether you are a millionaire or a scruff off the street. The young and the old, the rich and the poor receive, on the whole, excellent care without having to show a credit card or a cheque book. This is soothing to know…no one gets turned away for lack of money…
You are very welcomed. We own a Cabin in Ontario, about an hour away from Ottawa. I love your country, if I had to live anywhere aside from the US it would be Canada. I love your Fishing, your Poutine and Canadians for the most part are very charitable and welcoming. Our country could learn a few things from yours.

TPJ, How about this: say a doctor who does a cortisteriod epidural on a person who has a history of heart disease and diabetes. Say this does the procedure without checking the patient’s blood sugar level or blood pressure before the procedure?

Or say you have another doctor who prescribes their patient Demerol a controlled drug and writes “take as needed for pain” on the prescription??
Do you think the above actions are okay? I mean we aren’t talking about a slip and fall on an unshoveled walk way…

lilyofthevalley,

How’s bout you answer my “what if,” then I will answer yours?

Hi Mac,

It has to be beautiful country…anything near Perth or Golden Lake is paradise. Let alone it butts near the Algonquin Park. Heaven on earth…except…in the winter when it is so c-o-l-d.

If I am off the mark, it’s ok, just Ottawa itself is a sight to see. My brother-in-law’s sister owns a home off the Gatineau River. Her front door is just grass and flowers that leads to the River…gorgeous? no words…can’t imagine the price though to live there.

I live closer to the Niagara Falls. Although it is a wonder of the world, I do not get there too often. Just too many tourists. The drive from Fort Erie along the Parkway to the Falls is breath taking though and worth a trip or two during the year.,…especially in the autumn when the leaves change. My spiritual director is now living on the Parkway and I must go and see him some day…

Anyway, thank you… smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/23_30_114.gif

Blessings,
Shoshana

How’s bout you answer my “what if,” then I will answer yours?

Why? It’s a silly comparision. You are comparing an apple and an orange!
Unlike the walk way, a doctor is providing a service. A patient goes to a doctor with the idea in the mind the doctor will behave competently and ensure their safety. It’s only reasonable.
Now, if I were a profesional walk way shoveler and a person was using my services and paying me to ensure their safety walking across their walk way I would say yes I hold some liability.

lilyofthevalley,

Obviously I think the sidewalk scenario is useful for the point I am trying to make–I actually never implied it was the same as your doctor scenario. I cannot understand why you would be reluctant to answer my questions. I welcome a conversation about this topic, yet in order to have a real conversation we must both be willing to answers queries–that helps us each have the ability to make the points we desire.

Have a blessed and safe weekend. 🙂

Negative aspects of American Culture:
  1. Texas
I’ll have to disagree with you on this one, WhiteDove. I grew up in New Jersey, lived in Indiana, Texas, California, and briefly in Florida. I’ve visited every state east of the Mississippi River, and about half of the staes west of the Mississippi, including briefly Washington State.

I love Texas, of all the places I’ve lived, it’s the place I want to stay in. It’s extremely friendly, has a rich history and diverse geography. We don’t have anythig like Mount Ranier, but that is why I want to spend more time in places like Washington State, to sample what the rest of the country has to offer.

Heartfelt greetings from Texas!

I wish.

We have a couple of high school girls who insist on wearing white shirts with about 4 buttons undone and black bras with low rise blue jeans and top o’ the thong hanging out.

Michael C:
I had a friend in NY who was a citizen of Canada and was very sick. He needed a Cat-scan. He could get one the same day in NY for $2500 or get one for free in Cananda but had to wait 6 months. Neither option works for me personally.
The problem is that if he doesn’t have $2500 in New York he can’t get a scan but he could in Canada. (or at least after 6 months).

All this self flagelation is OK but don’t do yourselves down too much, there are many many good things in the States, but, one thing seems to be missing. What about the inordinately high death rate due to gunshot wounds in the States, that strangely enough, is the one item the Eupropeans find most difficult to come to terms with. In most European countries the death rate from guns is lower in a year that the States in a day what gone wrong?

Much of those statistics on gun related deaths include suicides. Certainly suicide is a tragedy. If these folks use a rope should ropes and sheets be outlawed?

In other words lots and lots of people dying from gunshot wounds isn’t a problem.
