Yes he is so clearly being intolerant. How dare he devote his time to God, the church, his parish, to its fellow parishioners! He clearly doesn’t see that he is suppose to live a celibate life if he has SSA. He can if he wishes be a member of the laity as long as he acknowledges his homosexuality is disordered and vows to remain celibate. If this causes him personal suffering… So what? Life is hard it wasn’t meant to be easy! He needs to suck it up after all that’s what he gets for being disordered.
Awwwww! Poor homosexuals. Just as people with communicable diseases are quarantined and those with AIDS can’t donate blood and blind people cannot be bus drivers, so the Church says that persons who have a “primarily homosexual orientation” cannot be admitted to Holy Orders, so may those engaged in serious sin NOT be given leadership or service positions in the Church. They simply are not worthy and do not set a proper example.

I apologize, but I am growing so weary of all the pity-generating posts and articles about how hard it is to be SSA. I mean, my goodness, there are so many people who have it so incredibly worse and yet live with such grace and self-sacrifice. SSA is not the only cross that people bear–everyone has them.

The original question was "Nicolas Coppola, gay catholic who married, is banned from church duties, was this right?"
stlcatholic86 asserted that Coppola’s removal from Church duties was “cruel” and admits that he is a “gay” man living a homosexual “lifestyle.” He also asserts that Church teaching on homosexuality is wrong and chooses to set his own standards regarding morality. Frankly, would you expect an “out” homosexual to assert otherwise? Homosexuals hate being told “no”, hate being told that their sickness is disordered and seek most always to justify homosexual pathology by asserting that anyone who disagrees is a “bigot” or who is “judgemental or unloving.” The Church merely teaches the truth about the reality of disordered homosexuality, therefore the homosexual “community” will always regard the Church as it’s enemy. Hopefully, our new Holy Father will eliminate homosexuals from the Church, root and branch.
What do you mean eliminate homosexuals from the Church? In any case I wouldn’t hold your breath I doubt the Holy Father will be ceding to your demand as it would be quite the contradiction of Jesus Christ himself.

So because I speak the truth of the RCC, you start to attack with a snarky remark. Well, as a charitable reminder, please remember that everyone suffers–everyone. It is a result of being a fallen people. The problem is, people with SSA think that their suffering is more severe, requiring special caveats. Let me tell you about my suffering for a minute. My husband and I are infertile. We know there are procedures that will help us grow our family but are against the teaching of the Church. But you don’t see me getting up in arms and attacking the Church in order to change her policies. You think I don’t hurt seeing all the ads with happy families, being asked why I don’t have xyz number of children? It nearly took out my marriage. But we are called to unite our suffering with Christ’s in order to obtain eternal salvation.

There’s a good lesson to be learned and I said it before: Life isn’t fair!!! I ended up going against the Church & pursuing fertility treatments. I had a stillborn daughter and a little boy…with autism. Ever met a family you are close to who has a kid on the spectrum? Well, it ain’t no party being criticized for being a bad parent or having your kid mocked, reprimanded, etc. by strangers for doing things he does not understand. And unlike people with SSA who have the choice to keep their inclinations to themselves, my kid can’t hide his autism. So he lives through the negative comments and lack of friends every day. I have to sooth his tears every day. I don’t have a lot of patience for people complaining about the plight of people with SSA. Walk a mile in my shoes and maybe you will see that you don’t have it so bad. Rant over.
I never claimed my plight was more gravely than anyone else, but you are making that assumption. The reason I brought up my opinion is because the topic of this thread is regarding homosexuality. If you think my homosexuality has been my biggest hurdle in life your wrong. I thought it would be considering my family is very Catholic, but actually they support me completely much to the extent that they all have changed their mind on the issue of marriage equality. I’m fortunate in that regard.

I’m not going to get into a who’s life is harder. My point is as Christians we should lighten the burden for everyone together not add to it. God graced you with a beautiful child, it seems like you were inferring because you tried fertility treatments you were punished. I really hope that isn’t the assumption you were making and I apologize completely if I’m wrong but that is how I read it. Children are really cruel and its are job as adults to teach. How many times do we hear fag or retard and walk by? We need to teach children respect that’s missing. Especially regarding autism, my cousin about my same age has an autism spectrum disorder. He’s been through a lot, but I like to think having a big loving family saw him through it. It always frustrates me when people think he’s dumb, quite the opposite actually, but he lacks the social skills to properly articulate himself. In the end, it’s not about walking in each others shoes its about understand the struggles we all go through and lighten the burden.

Ouch. Although I agree with your basic premise, couldn’t it be presented more in charity?

After saying that, shall I duck?

Don’t forget what the catechism says
Chastity and homosexuality
2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.” They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.
2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.
2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.
Accepting them with respect, compassion, and sensitivity does not mean we have to accept the act of homosexuality. Remember that it is not a sin to have an inclination to be homosexual. That it is a disorder is obvious to all but the ones mered in this disorder.

Are you being sarcastic? Of course any “partnership” that involves two people of the same sex holding themselves out to society as a couple is sinful. The word “domestic” means that they have set up a joint household.

No, but you implied the dude expelled from ministry had it rough. And yes, I do think I am being punished, in part, for my fertility decision. Regret it every day of my life.

I need to be honest. My BIL is SSA (hubby’s family). And I have seen my MIL and FIL bend over backwards–including joining a dissident group which rails against the Church–in support if this son. Hubby and I feel they made the wrong choice, but they did. We feel they should have at least tried to get BIL to lead a chaste life. However, their trying to force their feelings down our throat and threatening us was just plain wrong. On top of that, they have chosen to isolate us and give us zero emotional support with our son. So, I am pretty bitter. My BIL is just a plain 'ol jerk. My husband can’t stand him because he was a royal jerk to my husband when he was younger. But this son gets all the attention and sympathy because he is SSA and gets away with saying stuff like, “I don’t think C has autism. I just think he’s a spoiled brat.” But God forbid if we say anything to him, then we’re being bigots.

Moral of story–based on family experience, I think BIL leads a pretty charmed life compared to my son, who gets zero attention from my in-laws. I just don’t see where SSA people have so awful bad and just wish they would shut up for a while.

Perhaps he was talking about the priesthood where, you have to admit, there is a big problem with SSA priests and the compromise of their ministry? I agree, though, the words had emotion behind them.

Correct. I was refering particularly to the priesthood and positions of power and influence. Homosexuals will always be with us and should be treated with compassion, but should not be in positions of influence.

Oh I misunderstood. I agree with you.

We live in a sex-saturated, sex-obsessed, and morally-misguided culture that makes those with SSA feel less unusual and less likely to be ostracized for even having the temptation on one hand, but ironically more pressured to give in to the temptation on the other. It was cruel to have to live in a time when a person felt deep shame for even having the inclination towards sexual sins, but it was undoubtedly many times easier to maintain a sexually pure life, no matter what your orientation was.

I implied that it was a harsh decision not that his life was hard. I have no idea about that implication, it may be it may not be. I think its a harsh decision because it essentially firing the Priest and taking his livelihood away. I think that is extremely wrong when he hasn’t done anything morally wrong.

I also think you need to take things into context. I don’t pretend to know your story and I only have your side to it. However, I can understand your feelings towards to in-laws, they have mistreated you and your family. I would ask that you understand that this experience is not the experience of all gay people telling us to shut up because you had a bad experience in your life is not ok. Gay people and those who are perceived as gay face extreme struggles in everyday society. LGBT teens and those that are perceived as LGBT regularly commit suicide because of the judgements they face in society. There are many places in this country where being gay or being perceived as gay can get you fired and can cause verbal and physical harm upon you. There are many LGBT teens that are turned away from their family and often end up on the street homeless, many of these teens end up in prostitution. I’ve often thought that marriage really shouldn’t be a priority of the gay community when there are many serious issues are still to be fought. It’s not that I don’t think we shouldn’t have civil marriage right, my fear is that when we do society will move on thinking we have all the same rights and protections when we don’t. Thankfully as time goes on and society has evolved on its position on homosexuality is becoming easier for teenagers, but easier doesn’t mean it still isn’t a struggle.

I don’t think it’s appropriate that your brother in law treats his nephew in that manner. It actually brings me great sadness that I am an only child. I always feel a twinge of jealousy seeing my friends with their nephews and nieces and the joy it brings them. My point is simple your brother in law is missing out on a great opportunity to have a great relationship with his nephew and that is a real travesty.

I think at some point you and your in laws just have to agree to disagree. You feel they are trying to ram their opinion down your throats, I imagine they might feel the same way. I’m not asking you to agree with their decision or your brother in laws, but rather come to a point of mutual understanding. We are on this Earth way too shortly to feel bitter about these matters.

Finally, I pray that you don’t see it as God punishing you, but granting you a great gift in life. Our God is loving God not a spiteful one. I’m not saying he loves nor approves of our decisions, but he not the God that would spite us or for that matter an innocent for a worldly sin.

You are right - We should!
The death penalty affects hundreds. Abortion affects millions. It is, after all, a form of execution, and from the state, its advocates have insisted that women have the right until the moment of birth…or afterwards, for that matter.

I disagree with this assessment completely. This relegates homosexuals to pedophiles this simply isn’t the case. There were plenty of cases of priests molesting little girls, but should we ban heterosexuals from the priesthood? No instead we should ban pedophiles from the priesthood. It’s unfortunate that the two completely unrelated concepts have become intertwined in this debate.

The vast majority of sexual abuse cases by priests involves homosexual pedophilia, boys between 8 and 18. It is a homosexual issue primarily.

Are you inferring that homosexuals are more likely to be pedophilles?

I think you are right. I always think of SSA as something like a “thirst” for alcohol. It too has a psychological basis Maybe loneliness, or a feeling of deprivation. Alcoholism is frequently found among priests. Maybe homosexuality is as much owing to an inability to connect, except on a superficial basis, with the opposite sex as a lack of physical attraction. But many homosexuals–perhaps the majority–are bisexual, are maybe they have the need to find persons with certain qualities. But life is hard. We forget that most people suffer deeps traumas at some point in their lives , and they will do whatever gives them a sense of healing.

Pedophile priests seem to be overwhelmingly homosexual.
Most seems to prefer older boys, so pedophile is not the right term. My guess is that most of the pedophiles are the boy friends of mothers with very young children.
