I beg to differ. Those who argue that the Constitution is obsolete and doesn’t exist, by definition, argue that the United States is an invalid entity. If you destroy the Constitution, you destroy the hallowed “social contract” that is the basis for the federal government.People forget that the framers designed a constitution that allows amendments which 3/4 of the states can ratify without Congress. Many have suggested that the phrasing and language of the entire Constitution is obsolete and they have a point. The meanings of English words change all the time.
Woodrow Wilson articulated the progressive conception of the US Constitution as a “living document” that must be continually re-interpreted with the times. As Catholics we face that same progressive onslaught every day with regard to the war on the Magisterium, the effort to update our doctrines to be more in step with the times.
But the same problem exists. When we erode the foundation of the Church, we subvert Catholicism. Just as when we erode the foundation of American governance, we subvert the very cause. It’s a neat trick progressives play, hoping to erect their own dear frameworks in the ensuing vacuum. But that’s a dangerous game. Rather like a virus that kills the host.
