This is a new ad from Obama for America. You tell me if this is Main Street America?
Between Sandra Fluke. this Obama for America ad & the HHS mandate there is something both dark and vulgar w/ B. Obama et al.
Here is the transcript:
Your first time shouldn’t be with just anybody. You want to do it with a great guy. It should be with a guy with beautiful … somebody who really cares about and understands women.
A guy who cares about whether you get health insurance, and specifically whether you get birth control. The consequences are huge. You want to do it with a guy who brought the troops out of Iraq. You don’t want a guy who says, “Oh hey, I’m at the library studying,” when he’s really out not signing the Lilly Ledbetter Act.
Or who thinks that gay people should never have beautiful, complicated weddings of the kind we see on Bravo or TLC all the time. It’s a fun game to say, “Who are you voting for?” and they say “I don’t want to tell you,” and you say, “No, who are you voting for,” and they go, “Guess!”
Think about how you want to spend those four years. In college age time, that’s 150 years. Also, it’s super uncool to be out and about and someone says, “Did you vote,” and “No, I didn’t vote, I wasn’t ready.”
My first time voting was amazing. It was this line in the sand. Before I was a girl. Now I was a woman. I went to the polling station and pulled back the curtain. I voted for Barack Obama.

Brought to you by Malia & Sasha’s father (& mother?) & friends.
(To Ms. Dunham - hey wasn’t that his mother’s name?)
“You y-you’re all … all over the map!” … well known American Politician.
Trouble is … some voters did this four years ago. And they found out that … they were not … for all the promises … being courted, loved and cared for as much as … on his side
… and given the results of the four year “morning after” …

- I need a minute to more delicately phrase the cliche that came to mind!
Wow. This is the “cool girl” that all the other first time voters are going to adopt as their role model? The “non-virgin” with the sage advice to the unenlightened?
Her name is Dunham … is she a cousin of the president on Mom’s side?
The not too thinly veiled sexual adventurism that is based all upon romantic feelings almost swallows up the political message. Between the lines one gets the message that "you want to be thinking about giving up that virginity of yours … and be thinking about
the KIND of a guy you decide to (you know …). Marriage? Commitment? Well - Ms. Dunham can MAKE a commitment, you can tell by her bicep tattoo. But marriage isn’t considered in the analogy.
There was a female empowerment ethic there and an “I did it!” at the end. But there was a bit of the thrill of doing something that maybe a (good little) GIRL wouldn’t do but a WOMAN can - and DOES!
Given the polls, it may be backfiring. Suddenly Romney is tied with Obama 47-47 % in the “Women’s Vote”. Maybe this “War on Women” charge leveled at the GOP is falling flat.
I wonder if some women are getting miffed at being reduced to – just needing their sexual irresponsibilities subsidized; or having their role as mothers* trivialized, and the constant class warfare posturing that disturbs the peace many women prefer.
There is something inconguous in the Democrats featuring Sandra Fluke so prominently.
On one hand she looks stylish, young, smart (because she’s in law school) and powerful (as she is a spokesperson for women’s rights before Congress and a convention speaker).
On the other hand - poor Sandra is a victim. She needs help. She simply can’t PAY for all the birth control she needs. That mean ol’ CATHOLIC College has some’o’that wealth that oughtta be redistributed womanward. They should pay her $3000 for her pre-marital sex expenses (it’s only right!). If they refuse they should be sued. And publicly attacked.
Somewhere (I hope) women are thinking “THIS is what they think of us?” Victims as hopelessly helpless as that might need to sue the Knights of Columbus for limo rides to the polls November 6! And it’s YOUNG women that seem to be the targets of the campaign.
Trouble is rebellious young women can get into trouble – and most of them have Mom’s who instinctively will react in a protective and conservative way when they have a daughter headed for trouble. Even if they were a little wild themselves at that age.
The secondary purpose of Linda Dunham’s commercial might be largely to insure her own future credentials as a producer in liberal Hollywood perhaps. But she might be sincere (as she can be). The tenor of the ad is confidential (just between us girls) and
revealing (the experienced “woman” shows the “girls” what they want to do). There is
a bit of humor in turning the sexual innuendo into a political commercial … but the conspiritorial manner of Ms. Dunham built her tale of “her first time” into a tale of empowerment and rebellion.
That line in the sand she crossed was like something she knew other people would advise her against. But she drew back the curtains … went inside … and cast her first vote for … Ba-rack O-BA-ma! Then she waved her commercial to a close with a
coquettish and fashionable “aren’t I naughty …” look; to reveal that it’s what the hip crowd is doing.
I wasn’t really offended by the ad. But I was amazed at its disingenuous blindness to the
fact that the ad could backfire and lose more votes than gain them for the President.
If that’s the case … I REAALLY won’t be offended by it. Though it might lead some young women astray on the non-political front. :sad_yes:
