Not at all. He may well have meant he supported civil unions and now his view has evolved and grown as he has studied and thought out the issue. I’m just not surprised he eventually evolved and reached this place after doing so.
Weren’t you one of the people who called Mitt Romney a flip flopper for doing exactly the same thing? (except not on the gay ‘marriage’ issue).

I support it.

As a faith group, we can handle what we feel is right, wrong, appropriate or not. But, as a nation, I feel we have an obligation to provide equal rights to all, even those we feel are not appealing to us.

As a chaplain, all I can say is that I had many experiences trying to visit and comfort the spouse in a same sex couple and had to deal with their expectation that I would be prejudiced against them or they would feel uncomfortable telling me they were in a relationship. I wasn’t going to pry, so I was hamstrung, unable to provide the care I was well trained to give.

The loneliness of losing a loved one is bad enough without feeling degraded by not being able to call the person a husband or wife, if in fact that’s what they are to them.

In contrast, I’ve seen our church grant annullments to marriages where straight out infidelity has occurred, so, sadly, I can’t say our church’s hands are clean on this.

But, that said, we as a church have a right to deal with it within our walls, but as an American, I can’t see stopping it. I am far from an activist on this issue, but I feel it is a right and I can’t deny that right to the people I have known.
The Catholic Church does not support gay marriage or civil unions. I urge you to read exactly what the Church believes on this subject:

Cardinal Dolan: President Obama’s Remarks on Marriage 'Deeply Saddening’
Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), issued the following statement:
President Obama’s comments today in support of the redefinition of marriage are deeply saddening. As I stated in my public letter to the President on September 20, 2011, the Catholic Bishops stand ready to affirm every positive measure taken by the President and the Administration to strengthen marriage and the family. However, we cannot be silent in the face of words or actions that would undermine the institution of marriage, the very cornerstone of our society. The people of this country, especially our children, deserve better. Unfortunately, President Obama’s words today are not surprising since they follow upon various actions already taken by his Administration that erode or ignore the unique meaning of marriage. I pray for the President every day, and will continue to pray that he and his Administration act justly to uphold and protect marriage as the union of one man and one woman. May we all work to promote and protect marriage and by so doing serve the true good of all persons.

Wouldn’t it be easier for Mr Obama to just reject the whole Catechism of the Catholic Church at once, rather than doing it paragraph by paragraph? He would not want to be known as a cafeteria anti-Catholic would he?
Nah. While it WOULD be easier … the frog would feel the heat and jump from the pot.

The idea is to go as far as you can and still get that supposed “majority of Catholics” to still vote for you anyway.

In 2004 the “gay marriage” thing hurt Kerry. In 2008 Obama kept his distance from the issue and made pro-traditional marriage statements, even adding (to applause) “as a Christian … it’s sacred … God is in the mix …”

youtube.com/watch?v=rJhQBZ1La0w <Campaign 2008 interview with Pastor Rick Warren @ Saddleback Church, Orange County, CA.

Candidate Obama endorsed Civil Unions, and opposed Congress defining marriage (saying it was a prerogative of the states) - I paraphrase.

After eight more years (since Kerry and 2004) of constant free advertising of the issue on the MSM, movies, and TV news and entertainment programs, lopsidedly on the “why not?” side; VP Biden suddenly throws up a pro-SSM trial balloon, Obama is quoted by a key conservative (Santorum) as opposing SSM, and the President “evolves.”

Should adverse polling start tipping the battle-ground states RED, the POTUS may re-evolve, revolve, or attempt to solve - the ongoing mystery of what he stands for - AGAIN.

One wonders what other “sacred … God is in the mix …” things he may “evolve” on next.

PS: Trader, withering sarcasm there. In this case justified - IMO. The CCCatechism MAY be being reverse engineered by the Church’s enemies to provide counter-guidance.

Didn’t this whole thing start on Seinfeld? With some fictional Bohemians in Greenwich Village doing it and inviting Elaine to the ceremony or reception? And she didn’t know what to do or get them or how to act. And the “Seinfeld gang” just blinked, rolled their eyes, shrugged their shoulders and didn’t know what to think of it - while the laugh track guffawed.

Somewhere I fear a think tank is gleaning America’s future path from a South Park episode.

If he decides to force it to the world, he will see the wrath against it manifested both outside and inside America!

Is Obama still ‘evolving’ on federalism because currently he does not support federal action or a constitutional amendment for gay 'marriage, but to leave it up to the states. Why do I think his ‘evolving’ will have changed once again if he is reelected?

I would say it is possible.

While I don’t support gay marriage or abortion, I feel like I don’t have to go there in order to vote against Obama. I don’t like presidents who change their opinions once they are in office.

There was one debate at Saddleback Church where a campaign debate went on between Obama and McCain. When asked about “when life begins,” McCain gave a “straight up” answer “at conception.” “Ok. we know where you stand lets move on” was the vibe. COOL! 👍

Obama already started to show his stripes by getting “meally mouthed” with his answer about “decision with doctor, pastor” etc.

Obama already started showing himself back then.

I have. I disagree with it, based on my own experience. As I said, I am not an activist, nor was I ever attached to this idea, but I believe these people are deserving of a measure of dignity in illness and at the end of their lives and this word gives it to them.

I don’t want the government enforcing someone else’s faith on our church, either, so I believe this religious freedom the bishops keep talking about should be for both sides.

Gay marriage is a state’s rights issue. What are Obama/Biden getting involved in this for? Obviously to court the lefties, Hollywood, the media, etc. Traditional Democrat territory.

You forgot the GLBT and the homosexualist votes.

In fairness, stating that they are in favor of “gay marriage” does not change it from a state issue. It does, however, use the bully pulpit and gives support for efforts to overturn traditional marriage legislation and ammendments.

Obama was (and is) pro-abortion. Ultimately, he decided to force Catholic institutions to fund contraception and abortifacients.

Now, he admits that he’s pro homosexual “marriage”, and so, in his next term he’ll…

Marriage isn’t a religious freedom issue. Any church anywhere in the US is able to perform a religious ceremony for anyone and call it “marriage.” The question is whether the government should recognize, sponsor or sanction such unions. In states where the voters have been asked, the answer is “no.”

I didn’t vote for him in 2008, I won’t vote for him this year either. He is against everything I beleive in. There is bound to be somebody better to choose from to put in office. I can’t understand how the country has sunk to this level?

Today Obama came out and endorsed Same Sex Marriage and to top it off, good ole Catholic Nancy Pelosi said “Isn’t it great”

I’m sure most Catholics will be happy with his coming out of the closet in terms of his beliefs. Most Catholics are basically Episcopalians in faith beliefs anyway.

No one believes he evolved but you and Clarence Darrrow.

I hate to break anybody’s bubble, but it’s all about the money. From OpenSecrets dot org (the analysis site from the Center for Responsive Politics):
The impact on his campaign coffers won’t be seen for weeks. Some gay rights activists had vowed not to donate to Obama or the super PAC supporting him, Priorities USA, because they felt he hadn’t come through on issues they cared about.
From the Washington Post:
President Obama’s announcement Wednesday that he supports same-sex marriage highlights the importance of the gay community to his re-election effort, which could get a boost in donations as a result.
Also see this from the HuffPo.
Principle? Phooey. If it was about principle, he’d have done so far earlier in his 4 year re-election campaign.

Having said that, not to worry though. The GOP has nominated its most GLBT-friendly candidate in history, as well. So if Obama didn’t come out to support the degradation of marriage, I’m certain that his opponent would have.

The president is clearly making a campaign move. His motives could not be more transparent given his past statements on the subject. He is placing himself more and more into a far left corner, marginalizing himself.

I don’t doubt his purse will see a boost from the gay community because of his sudden support, we’ll have to wait at least a few weeks for collaborating news.

Still, he is making it easier to cast a vote against him!

We must continue to pray and heed Our Lady of Fatima all the more.
