Obama dropped membership from the Christian church under Rev. Wright to which he belonged for 20 years. Otherwise, he would not have been elected. That was the goal, to be elected.

After taking office, one of his clear goals was to reach out to Muslims. His words and actions were so effective that even the Minister of State for Industries Ayatullah Durrani, who belongs to the ruling Pakistan People’s Party, asked him to declare himself the leader of all Muslims, to be Caliph, about a month ago.

He must now feel it’s imperative to reach out to Christians, even if he discounted the U.S. as a Christian nation and he left out the mention of the Creator as the source of our inalienable rights in his speeches. The goal is to reverse the big slide in support for him, surely looking to 2012.

If people are skeptical about his “choice” of religion, or if he really follows any, he only has himself to blame.

He does need our prayers. Our country, too.

And I think that would apply to many other politicians, …
Can’t argue that, since Pelosi came immediately to mind while reading.
…You know, I don’t think that the concept of a black liberation theology really pertains to this discussion. …
Sure it does. Obama’s a Christian by choice, a Christian who happens to practice Black Liberation Theology (or at least he did for decades). Understanding what that means helps clarify what being a Christian means to Obama.

Rush just pointed out something interesting. Brother’s keeper is from the old testament…Cain and Abel.

I’m not sure that what Obama believes as a Christian is “black liberation theology.” A better description of Obama’s Christian faith is provided in the following article:

The black Christian churches in the U.S. have long looked to the Bible to give them hope that God would help them endure oppressive, unjust circumstances and eventually change those circumstances to provide justice and freedom. There’s nothing unchristian or even suspicious about that. If you are a Roman Catholic christian, you belong to a Church that espouses a “preferential option for the poor” and preaches social justice. Glen Beck would question whether you are truly Christian if you attend such a Church. Frankly, I have more trouble with Beck’s brand of Christian faith than with Obama’s.

“So I came to my Christian faith later in life and it was because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead — being my brothers’ and sisters’ keeper, treating others as they would treat me.”

Rush just pointed out something interesting. Brother’s keeper is from the old testament…Cain and Abel.
After Cain had murdered his brother Abel, God asked him where his brother was. Cain answered, “I know not; am I my brother’s keeper?”
•Cain’s words have come to symbolize people’s unwillingness to accept responsibility for the welfare of their fellows — their “brothers” in the extended sense of the term. The tradition of Judaism and Christianity is that people do have this responsibility

The Golden Rule…The Golden Rule, as a concept, has a history that long predates the term “Golden Rule” (or “Golden law,” as it was called from the 1670s[6]).[2] The ethic of reciprocity was present in certain forms in the philosophies of ancient Babylon, Egypt, Persia, India, Greece, Judea, and China.

I’m not saying he isn’t a Christian…he just used very awkward examples of why he became one. Guess the teleprompter wasn’t programmed.

No one can be the servant of two masters, and Obama cannot be Muslim and Christian at the same time. To adhere to one is to repudiate the theology of the other.
His inability to address this issue, and the multicultural imperative to leave it open, are going to hurt him and his party in the future.

Not really. The article gives a general description of BLT and manages to leave out the negatives, but the fact remains that Obama attended Wright’s church (where Wright loudly preached “G… d… America”) for 20 years, so that is likely a better indication of Obama’s form of Christianity.

That happens to be Trinity United Church of Christ and I, like its white members, have attended services there. So let’s not make blanket conclusions.

Okay. But, I still think it is a good idea to research and educate oneself about what BLT means to many.

"What is Liberation Theology?

…However, Liberation Theology has moved from the poor peasants in South America to the poor blacks in North America. We now have Black Liberation Theology being preached in the black community. It is the same Marxist, revolutionary, humanistic philosophy found in South American Liberation Theology and has no more claim for a scriptural basis than the South American model has. False doctrine is still false, no matter how it is dressed up or what fancy name is attached to it. In the same way that revolutionary fervor was stirred up in South America, Liberation Theology is now trying to stir up revolutionary fervor among blacks in America. If the church in America recognizes the falseness of Black Liberation Theology as the Catholic Church did in the South American model, Black Liberation Theology will suffer the same fate that the South America Liberation Theology did; namely, it will be seen as a false, humanist doctrine dressed up in theological terms."

Christian by choice has to be better than Christian by default. After hearing about that poll on religion yesterday, I decided that having one’s faith questioned is decidedly better than not knowing the questions of one’s own faith…

"…The more you know about Jeremiah Wright, the more appalling he is. Spengler today digs up a televised interview between Wright and Sean Hannity in which Wright upbraided Hannity for not having read the black liberation theologian James Cone, with whom Wright identifies. Who is James Cone? He’s the theologian who wrote this:

*Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community … Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love. *"…

OK, Obama is the servant of only one master, Christ. He is not and never was a Muslim. He has addressed the issue directly by sayign that he is not a Muslim, that he is a Christian, which is supported by all the available evidence. What does he have to do to convince you that he is not Muslim?

Actually, I’m convinced that you are a Muslim. You seem to know a lot about Muslim ethics, and you are obviously obsessed with this topic. Are you able to prove that you are not a Muslim?

Looks like there’s been an oversight ~ here’s the recommendations the Moderator made several posts back:
Some rules of the road here:
  1. Don’t pass judgement on President Obama’s spiritual life.
  2. Don’t pass judgement on other Catholic’s spiritual life either.
  3. If the man says he is a Christian, we take him at his word here.
  4. Don’t call people names.
  5. Always post charitably
  6. Discuss the issues, not each other.

I find it interesting that some here have said that we have no right to say that someone isn’t a Christian when we as Catholics do this often and it isn’t questioned. For example, don’t Mormons and JWs call themselves Christian? But because of their beliefs we don’t consider them to be. Arius and Nestorius called themselves Christian (or Catholic I assume) but we call them heretics.

So Mr. Obama considers himself a Christian but everything that I’ve read from him on the matter leads me to believe that his ideas of Christianity are heterodox to say the least. Honestly, what he says about Jesus sounds a lot like what I’ve heard Muslims say about Jesus.

I am not just an admirer of Jesus Christ.
I worship Jesus Christ
I adore Jesus Christ
I am a follower of Jesus Christ
I believe He is God

As soon as it becomes an issue. …
The topic of this thread is that Obama is a Christian by choice. For 20 years, Obama adhered by choice to the Black Liberation Theology version of Christianity preached by Rev. Wright, that blacks are oppressed victims of whites. Obama now adheres to some private Christian practices as indicated by statements issued by the White House. But, it appears that he is yet influenced by BLT, considering his policies on social issues, as well as his voiced opinions in certain areas, i.e. the Gates and Crowley fiasco.

No I can’t.
But that’s obviously your point.
In none of my posts did I assert that Obama was a Muslim.
I asserted that he practices a cut-to-fit Christianity.
That means that there is no doctrine or objective standard that we can hold him to.
In other words, his Christianity is of his own making.
He tells us that he admires the teachings of Christ.
Mormons do the same.
Muslims do the same.
But by no means are they Christians.
