On a positive note, what is your FAVORITE hymn?

We sang “Be Not Afraid” tonight. I love that song.

I love that whole album…“Earthen Vessels”.
 
peace be with you! for me it is the Salve Regina, but there is a specific version that i love. i have heard it sung two different ways. the shorter one is much more common. i like it but i really like the longer version of it. many religious orders have a tradition of singing it right after Compline (night prayer in the liturgy of the hours) before they go to their cells for the night. the Community of St. John sings it and i believe that other congregations like the Dominicans, Cistercians and Benedictines close each night with the version i like. you can hear a clip of it at the Nashville Dominicans website.

I don’t remember the name of my favorite but it’s basically John chapter 6 put to music. It’s a great communion song. As a convert I love it because that’s one of the chapters that made me know the Catholic Church is the true church.

I believe it’s “I’m the Bread of Life” but again I’m not sure.

“I am the Bread of Life” is one of my favorites, but I get choked up as it brings back funeral memories. I especially like it since it is unambiguously Catholic.

“Amazing Grace” although a Protestant song is an all-time classic.

I used to go to a Spanish language church where the Alleluia was to the melody of “the Body of John Brown,” better known as “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” it went “Gloria, Gloria, Aleluya, en el nombre del Señor”

I go to all different types of Masses, so I have several categories (after all, comparing Latin music with Life Teen music is like comparing apples and oranges.)

I love the Salve Regina and some other songs too but I only know the Dutch titles which will be a problem here, or maybe we
can add voice here so we can sing songs…😃

I find Big L’s list very usefully laid out. This thread has been a good resource for new ground for me. I just went and bought a new CD of Latin classics (not the south of the border kind). I plan on learning and introducing a few this year. This is our church’s and my biggest weakness.
 
I’ve always loved on eagle’s wings
The choir sang it at my grandpas funeral when I was a little girl and it got to me then and it gets to me now, it used to be that when we would sing it in church I would have to stop singing because I would start crying but as the years have moved on it has gotten to be that now I just feel close to grandpa when I hear it. Also, my grandma who is also gone now just loved holy, holy, holy, we sang it at all her birthdays when she was in the nursing home in late life and she just glowed when all 11 of her children and 40 grandchildren sang it to her 😃
 
Without any thought, my favorite is the Ave Maria-Shuberts version. Another that comes to mind is How Great Thou Art.

👋 I’ve read all the responses and was surprised that *The Church’s One Foundation *and Love Divine, All Loves Excelling and *All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name *didn’t make it on any of the posts. :hmmm: Are these not being sung anymore…? or been trampled by the likes of *Anthem *and *Sing a New Church? :confused: *

Anything from our beloved St. Thomas Aquinas is not only beautiful, it’s sublime, and I must confess a tendency to work “Adoro Te” into the program whenever I play for a regular of funeral Mass.

I like other hymns, too, but those very much lift me out of myself and point me to something ever so much Larger than my own imagaination and emotion.
