Opinion on the #Metoo movement

I HATE that we are seeing the word “slut” and “sluttish” all over this thread.

At the risk of sounding very modern, this word is very gendered and derogatory when the more neutral word “promiscuous” would do. It is cutting. It is an attack.

At the risk of sounding like a Catholic mama, Our Lady and Our Lord do not look upon these women and call them sluts. Their hearts fill with sadness over women made in the image and likeness of God who do not know their dignity and are in such pain whether they show it or not. Pray for them. Love them. Do NOT use the word slut.
I was saying “SlutWalk” since that’s the official term. I’ll say promiscuous when it can be altered.

#metoo = “we should stop sexually harassing each other”
SlutWalk = “I wanna walk down the street wearing next to nothing”

Massive difference. You’ll be saying #metoo is the same thing as ‘Free the Nipple’ next.

For the record - my wish to see an end to sexual harrassment in no way means I have a wish to parade around naked or semi-naked in public.

I’m not pulling this from out of my own conclusion. This is precisely their plight and they have said it. I am equally confused, but this is indeed what they have said.

Bull! There was no such thing as #metoo until last year. Certainly not 5 or 10 years ago when the first SWs were happening. (apologies - I too dislike the term)

From my knowledge, the first one was around 2011, 2012 – which is close enough to 10 years ago. But ever since the one from 2016, that’s where it especially took off and (at least) co-opted the MeToo movement.

But even before MeToo, that movement existed before it was given an official name. The Columbia Mattress Girl is the perfect example of this. If you don’t know what I’m referring too, I recommend reviewing the whole story.

Please provide a quote where anyone has said that SWs came AFTER #metoo.

Which one? We now have to be precise since we acknowledge there was were multiple ones. I’m referring to the one from at least 2 years ago.

The most recent is the Tel Aviv SW which they called “Not Your Toy” which is supposed to be “in the wake of Me Too” as in in support of it.

Yes…this is a bit of what one sees too.
And when feminism comes into the equation, and power " games" come into play, the struggle was for something different than " sex".
We cannot avoid memories, like being in historical male arenas,en par in hierarchy and being asked to be the ones to leave the meeting and " serve coffee"…

I asked for quotes. In relation to SW as a movement, not individual walks.

I haven’t seen it in the #MeToo movement, is what I meant.
I would say that the #MeToo has encouraged it, though - as I’d never seen it before that time. That is assuredly my opinion, but it’s also an interesting coincidence.

I don’t have them memorized, but I think we are talking about the walks.

And by the way, I’m not p(name removed by moderator)ointing that exclusively either.

Well then quote me someone - anyone at all - who has reached the same comclusion.

SW’s started around 2011. They did indeed preface the #MeToo movement, but even a quick Google search shows how they’re starting to cross paths.

It’s not helping at any rate.

I’ve got links showing how they’re getting crossed, but some of the language (in the links - yes, blew my mind as well!) will likely get me filtered, so I can’t provide them. There’s a progression from 2011 to 2015 to an article in Glamour in 2018 (on a fairly hideous book, I might add) that clearly shows how the two are converging.

The culture itself - meaning the overriding US culture - isn’t doing itself or any of this any favors. And neither is mass media - which I really think is driving most of it.

One point is consent. The other is the right of a person to define themselves and not have one-dimensional labels stuck on them by others.

When I am around children I act like a.child - sing silly songs, play with dolls and toy trucks etc. Now when i do I am certainly not acting according to my fullest and utmost dignity and worth as an adult.

But guess what - the fact that I sometimes, even often, unashamedly do childish things isn’t the sum total of myself or my value as a human. And it doesn’t give anyone the right to treat me as “less than” if they disapprove of my behaviour.

I am sure that there is far more to Ms Rose than her choice of clothing or lack thereof or (one presumes fully consensual ) extracurricular activity.

Yes - but there’s a reason you don’t act like a child around adults, correct?

Just like there’s a reason we don’t wear a bathing suit to go to work at, say, Wells Fargo?

I’m a bit lost here though.

Slut walks are called as such not because they were celebrating their promiscuity, but rather because they were protesting ‘rape culture’ and victim blaming?

That’s not what I said.

What I said was the two are getting crossed in the name of the #MeToo movement. And yes, they actually were also protesting this idea of “rape culture”, though I never mentioned that nor even thought about it when I wrote the post.

No I was just clarifying, since it was brought up as an example of promoting promiscuity

Note: I don’t think metoo is a movement anymore. It seems like anything related to sexual assault immediately gets thrown under this

In terms of articles, I found overlapping quotes; for example quotes from Tarana Burke who supported the SW (she’s the founder of the MeToo movement). Also quotes from Amber Rose who established the LA SW as being an extension of MeToo. Nothing where it says “It started because of this” or vice versa. I don’t know if you’re looking for that specifically.

It’s more of what has been co-opted, which is more so my point.

I’ll send those quotes if you’d accept those.

Essentially, yes. They were protesting the idea that a woman dressed immodestly was therefore asking for it. It’s sort of a demonstrative hyperbole - that even if a woman had sex with a different man every night and paraded naked down the street, it still wouldn’t be ok to rape her.
