John Paul 2 is going to roll in his Grave with Trump using him today.

Are you assuming there are not many who abhor both violence by rioters (as opposed to peaceful protesters outside the WH yesterday), and the equally appalling “look at how pious I am” moment theatrically and shamelessly staged by POTUS?
Yeah Pius IX wouldn’t have resorted to extreme tactics to disperse protestors.

Not going there, or playing the game this morning.
No game. If protests had erupted in the Papal States, for instance, we don’t really need to doubt what the response would have been. But in Trump’s case, look at how unchristian he’s acting.

Judging by posts like yours, I’d say the same thing is apparently true of posters creating accounts on Catholic Answers and identifying as “Catholic” in their profile. The attitude of some folks around here is sad and embarrassing. You may not like his actions, or disagree with him on issues, but to presume to know anything about his relationship with Christ is arrogant and something the worst figures in the bible would have done.

Or clap from Heaven. Since neither of us knows best to assume the worst. The amount of posters who claim to have spiritual insight in the Almighty and after life is amazing. We are a truly blessed bunch. Catholic Answers, baby!

They were peaceful and i suggest you .check the time for it was before 7. They could have asked the crowd to move, but no that would have been to easy.

Wait – you’re not against protests in general, are you?

Its sad and embarrassing to be a Trump supporter - once again here is someone judging everyone on the forum as unworthy because they don’t agree with the Great holy DR Meinheimer who know best.

Who did I judge? I called out a poor post where you stated something as fact you have no insight into, casting aspersions on how a Saint would react to the President invoking him. On the heels of another poster claiming he wasn’t actually a Christian.

Don’t get defensive because you said something you cannot possibly know and attacked a person’s character and sincerity about their relationship with the Lord. Honest answer - how could you possibly know?

Saying these are ‘peaceful protests’ to me is meaningless. We don’t know if someone could have had a weapon, a rock and so on.

This after last night where one officer was killed and about 4 injured.

There have also been examples of where a black cop shoots a black male. Interesting, how this didn’t happen then.

Nope. I’m saying judging Trump’s actions, much less his faith, by these actions would also imply a judgement on what would have been far more severe actions by a representative of the Church.

As long as people fall for it, Trump is going to keep giving them what they want, that is, guns and the Bible.

Reminds me of when Reagan was asked why he didn’t attend Church more frequently, and he responded in his own inimitable way that he didn’t want to endanger the lives of the parishioners. At least he had a certain degree of class to his ridiculous statements.

Speculation on what might be is exactly the kind of attitude that leads to unjust treatment of the innocent.

Are you sure these very protesters were responsible?
Possibly they were waiting for dark when the looting and burning starts.
Another example of reacting to what might be instead of what is known to be about a group of people.
This is why I never listen to NPR.
Just another orange man is bad story.
This same story was covered by many other news outlets. The facts speak for themselves.

It appears to me that Trump will stop at nothing to magnify his image, looking tough to his base, looking religious to the religious. The contrast between standing in front of a Church waving a bible while his forces gas the protesters to make way for the photo-op is truly striking.

Yep. I don’t even get the whole hold a Bible up thing in the first place. Who does that? He didn’t go in, didn’t tour the burned-out part, didn’t meet the Rector. Just walked over to show himself outside the White House.

If a nearby Starbucks had been burned, he would have walked over there and held up a Frappachino.

I’m not sure why this isn’t a crime.

How is it legal for police to tear gas peaceful protestors who were not in violation of a curfew?

Potential illegal activity doesn’t work - we are all potential murders then.

This is one important reason why qualified immunity for police needs to be removed or seriously reformed. It sounds like this was a police riot. Richard M. Daley in Chicago was famous for instigating those.

Police actions against peaceful protestors are not only a violation of their First Amendment right to protest, but strike at the heart of what American should stand for.

I’m now even more sure that when Trump said “dominate,” he meant “silence.” He doesn’t take kindly to criticism, and now he is tear gassing critics. Not a look the US is going for.

I wonder when a new episode of “Kent State” will commence? Sending in the army against American citizens, is against the constitution. But of course this hopefully-soon-ex-president does not care about the constitution.
